The Korean Language Center of New York

I’ve pretty much finished my first semester of learning korean at this and I must say it’s been a nice experience. You know that scene in the Matrix, when everything all of a sudden begins to click? I felt just like that walking down 32^nd street long before the course was over. Granted, I didn’t understand what the signs say, but at least I can read the words now!
The classes may be a bit pricey but it’s worth it because the class size is super small — there were only 2 others with me. My class was Tues and Thurs for about 1.5 hrs. The professor I had teaches at Columbia University as well.
I really liked how the class the instructor would cancel classes if one of us couldn’t make it so that none of us fall behind. It’s obvious that he really cares about teaching, and it always felt as if he would go the extra mile to make sure that we understood the language.
When I speak Korean, nobody’s gonna believe that I’m Korean, but at least I should be able to communicate with them.
(hmm, I tried to type stuff in korean, but Unilocal strips out korean font.) they should fix this!

i just finished my 1^st semester (i got through lessons 1 – 5 of the 1^st book) and have learned so much! i can read, write, and speak at a elementary level. You definitely have to make sure to study and do your homework but it’s a comfortable environment with very small classes 1 – 5 students max so you get a lot of 1 – 1 attention. If you stay with the program and take it seriously you can be reading, writing, and speaking within 6 months– 1 year!

After researching a few places, I settled with KLCNY. I was very happy with my decision to come here for classes. Going into this school, I was already capable of reading and writing in Korean, but speaking and comprehension was pretty bad. Also, like most of those who are learning a second language, I was very shy when speaking.
I came here for 2 sessions (about a year) and left with much more understanding of the language and of the culture all together. Professor Lee was a wonderful instructor. She’s very patient and explanatory. The classes are usually small so it’s easy to follow along and ask questions when you need to. There is a audio visual part of the class where everyone moves into the computer room to work with an interactive dvd.
I loved coming to class and I made some great friends through this school. They offer classes for beginners all the way up to «Business Korean». There are also cultural classes for adopted Koreans who wish to learn more about their homeland.
Overall, this is a wonderful place. I plan on signing up for classes again soon.
