Love this bar! Awesome drinks named after poets– I like the Tennessee Williams which is a sweet tea vodka and of course the dead poet is amazing! It tastes like grape soda but beware– it’s strong! They also give you free popcorn if you’re looking for a snack :)

Literary references, good tap options, friendly staff, free popcorn, cozy spot! What more could you ask for? Perfect little spot for a pint and a chat. Or try one of their cocktails named after different poets. Can’t go wrong. Though get some more female poets on the list!

To start, this place is tiny. And it was a huge issue for me. I had the Walt Whitman cocktail and it was amazing($ 12) My friend and I wanted to sit down and order food but there was absolutely no room. We enjoyed our drink and wound up leaving to go to a bar with more tables so we could eat something. I would come back, though. Will update if next time is better!

There are certain places that one goes to, that remind you why it’s good to be alive: this is one of them. The whole time I was surrounded by books, quotes on the wall, the people who read them and a grape-soda concoction(the dead poet) that made my heart swell. I took one sip, and proclaimed with an almost quivering anticipation, smiling: ‘I’m scared.” Literally, I had tears in my eyes later in the night. I was, thus, feeling quite excited and let the good times roll(also had a Dorothy Parker). Good company can transform any atmosphere, however the crowd was genuinely relaxed and to each his own. Bathrooms are NYC-mini-studio-apartment-closet small. Be prepared. Otherwise, great arrangement of the space. Brian(the staff member) gave us exceptional service and was super friendly. Music was great throughout the night. You will see me there again.

I checked this place out with a friend tonight. while I waited outside for her to show up, I met this funny couple who became fast friends. When my friend arrived, we went in, and easily grabbed two stools at the bar. Several drinks and countless laughs later, we had a blast. The bar is very narrow, creating plenty opportunities to meet your bar stool neighbors. Perk list: –hooks for bags under the bar –drinks named after, you guessed it, dead poets –friendly bartenders that knew the names/drinks of regulars –super thick onion rings –unique beer list I had a stinky burger(cooked perfectly) and onion rings. 4 drinks, 1 stinky burger, 1 order of chicken fingers = $ 70

Wow. We were in the upper west side after leaving e’s bar, which i am not a fan of. My sister hits the trusty Unilocal app out and bam it was between this place and some other place. In the drunken stupor, we decided on this place. The bar is quite narrow and we were unknown as to why lied ahead. Definitely, by far the loudest people here and surprised we didn’t get kicked out. They give you complimentary popcorn. Decent beer selection. I think one of the events that turned this from a 3 to a 5 was my sister’s drink. After ordering my beer, I saw another menu on the table with these other drinks. I give to her and she orders this alcoholic hot chocolate that was the . Drunk people also love to eat. This leads me to the second event. The food was so fresh and amazing. By the time, we ate the alcohol was slowly leaving the body. We look at the menu, regular smegular, someone ordered fish and chips, some truffle fries and some pork wings. That food came out and it was heaven. the fish from the fish and chips @ about 1 in the morning was so fresh. The fries were hot and well seasoned and those pork jerk wings omg … there was like 6 of us and they were gone in less than 2 minutes. I have to explore upper west side!

I love the theme and the quotes on the wall. It has a slightly divey vibe with free popcorn available. I perused a little Shakespeare while sipping my beer. They serve sweet potato tots, which I love too.

Book theme, Im 80% in love already ! After making it here twice or thrice I have to say that I really do like this place. It was cool but relaxed. The waiter was a no-nonsense kind of cool guy but I liked his wit. Alcohol Bar + food + Book Rustic Décor + All things Poets = makes me feel like this is the closest I’ll get to my platonic love for literary men! The Bummer is that they are strict with their free-Birthday drink. You must share your birthdate with one of the Poets listed and you must be there on your exact Birth day Date. I was a week away and there was no mercy! For moments like this, find refuge in your favorite poem, plus a good drink.

Awesome bar! Great signature cocktails and yummy bar food. All the employees working were nice and fun. Great atmosphere with a great UWS crowd. You have to try their signature dead poet cocktail!

Nice bar, can get crowded easily. Lots of fun quotes to read on the walls and you can beat free fresh popcorn and a solid Guiness

This is a cool UPW neighborhood bar! The bartenders are nice. Ok, so it’s a little divey, but the coolness factor of the Guinness plaques(if you drink over a number of pints of Guinness over a period of time, you can have your name on the wall of fame) more than makes up for it! It’s a great place to hang out after work or meet friends.

Very cool bar in the Upper West Side and a nice alternative to the more fratty options in this area. Craft beer, free popcorn, and plenty of space for conversation. Two thumbs up!

Poor bartender was taking care of the entire bar! The bar is typical, nothing too different from other bars in the city. The food was also just mehh. Unless some dead poets lure me in with their words next time, I don’t think I’ll be frequenting this place again.

Good happy hour deals. I thought it was supposed to be more like a speakeasy but its more like a pub. Jukebox in the corner, good music, good specials for happy hour and free popcorn. Perfect for drinks with a group after work

Grabbed a few drinks here while waiting for a table at Land. Bar was a typical UWS neighborhood bar… nothing special, but nowhere I wouldn’t come back to either. Cute inside. Narrow at the front and a larger space in the back(which I avoided as there was a very loud, very drunk group of birthday girls back there). We had a drink or 2 outside which was nice. I’d come back if I found myself nearby in need of a drink. They had some decent drink specials, which is always a plus in a city filled with $ 15 cocktails.

So while I have had two previously wonderful times here at the restaurant, this time was beyond atrocious. As I currently sit here, awaiting a refund, I have to say that this has been perhaps the worst experience I’ve had in a New York bar. I ordered the Hemingway and an El Diablo burger with a veggie patty. The Hemingway was great as always and then I received the burger. I waited for my friends burger to arrive before trying it for a full 30 minutes. The vacuous, Ghost World wannabe had eaten all of my friend’s fries from the burger, and then SAIDSHECOULDN’T ORDERMOREDESPITEEATING A CUSTOMER’S ORDER. Her coworker stared at her bewildered and insisted she could, and she let out a groan and then did it. So I finally tried the burger and it was a beef patty. Okay, another mess up — whatever! But when I went down to remedy the issue she told me it would be another 45 minutes to get my corrected burger. Since we had already been here an hour, I didn’t want to do that and then she hassled me for wanting a refund because I had eaten some of the fries! Sorry that I was hungry for waiting for a half hour for my friend’s food and ate my fries. Another begrudging groan and only a refund for the burger with no apology for messing up both my friend’s and my order. STAYAWAYFROMTHISHELLISHPUBTHATDOESNOTCAREABOUTYOUORYOURTIMETHERE. I love living on the Upper West Side. I really do. But the nightlife, to put it bluntly, sucks. Exhibit A: Amsterdam Avenue. Lined with bars that are all some blend of fratty and creepy, this area tends to be a disappointment on most nights. But not to fear, Upper West-Siders! Dead Poet is a diamond in the rough here. Here are my notes: –Wonderful and friendly staff. Most of the nights I have come here(including last night), the place has been packed. But the bartenders, with their Usain Bolt-like speed, manage to serve you pretty quickly, even if you order one of their signature cocktails –FREEPOPCORN. Okay, I almost never eat it, but if I’m somewhere in between tipsy and drunk, I like to know that it’s there, waiting for me, like a trusty pet or a whipped significant other. –Beer and whiskey selection is solid. –Everything here, as you could imagine, is poet-themed. The décor, the drinks, the table adornments, everything. –So onto the drinks: Though these aren’t the most elegant cocktails I’ve ever had, they’re really tasty and tend to pack a punch. The drink menu changes occasionally, but my go-to girly cocktail here is the Walt Whitman(Lemon vodka, gin, coconut rum, and orange liqueur). Don’t get this if you’re not about sweets — really really sugary. Last night I also got the Dorothy Parker(Gin, Aperol, Punt E Mes and a dash of chili powder). Quite different from the Walt Whitman(as you’d expect, given the chili powder), but equally good. I have an affinity for spicy gin drinks, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t try this one out. –Ambiance: Much cozier and typically more low key than the rest of the bars on Amsterdam. It can definitely get rowdy at times(especially when Columbia students venture down on Thursday-Saturday nights), but never overwhelmingly so. It’s smaller than a lot of the other bars in the area as well, so overall it’s a relatively chill establishment. Also a note: A+ on the music. There’s jukebox that I’d suggest taking advantage of — great selection, and tunes from any era you can think of. They generally play a lot of throwbacks and I like a bit of nostalgia with my alcohol every so often.

Awesome, awesome beer menu. We had a company here last week after the JPMCC. Location was easy to find. The bartenders and servers here were awesome! We had these amazing buffalo chicken sliders that everyone loved. Actually, all the food we had was delicious. but the buffalo chicken sliders were a hit. The bar looks small when you first walk in, but they have a seated area in the back and also a few patio tables. The décor here is great. Bathrooms — there’s only one stall for men and one for women, which sucks if you have a big group or it’s a busy night at the bar.
