Approximately 3 years ago I filed a claim with the VA for my Mom. My Dad was a veteran of not one but two wars, the Korean War and World War II.
It was brought to my attention that my Mom was eligible for Survival Spousal Benefits. I knew I needed help navigating the sea of paperwork to obtain this and The American Legion came to the rescue. When I first met with these people I probably inundated them with paperwork. I wanted to make sure we had everything that was required and in order. Afterwards, whenever I received something from the VA I was instructed to contact them (which I did frequently). Well, it worked.
Fast forward to last year, my mother started receiving monthly payments to help offset the costs of the Home Health Aide and medical bills. Then just this past June, I got an unexpected call from someone in the VA. my mother was actually due for retro benefits going back to when I first opened up the case. It took awhile, but we finally received the benefits.
If you have a spouse or parent that is a veteran of any war and are getting spun around by the VA, contact your local American Legion Office. It may take time, but be persistent like me.
