Temple Israel of the City of New York

This is an outstanding religious school which my three children have attended for the last 8 years. We were around before the changing of the guard several years ago and it has improved remarkably with creative new curricula and programming. Under Rabbi Buyer’s leadership they have implemented many new outstanding programs including distance learning for Hebrew school (which my older son loved) and a post bar/​bat mitzvah academy which is creating creative programs and remarkable service/​learning trips for middle and high schoolers, and highly regarded national curricula produced by the Reform movement and by Facing History. Anyone who is religious school shopping should come see a religious school t’filah service or a Rocking Shabbat service to understand how Temple Israel is working to appeal to young families and create meaningful and appealing worship opportunities for kids

Temple Israel is a very special synagogue and one of which I am proud to say I am a member. The clergy are brilliant and provide both religious and lay leadership. The services are spiritual and joyous with singing, participation, and thought-​provoking sermons. The programming is excellent with «something for everyone,» all year long — so much I cannot even list. But beyond all that is the jewel in the crown which is the Religious School.
The Religious School at Temple Israel is a wonderful place for our children to learn more than the important Jewish prayers, rituals and values — it’s where they learn to be a member of a community. At Temple Israel, children can feel good about what they are learning, meet new friends, be supported by caring adults, and find a respite from their busy lives. Most importantly, my children willingly attend and even enjoy Religious School. If that’s not a sign of a good program, I don’t know what is!

I’m Biased of course! But I do love this Synagogue and all of its members! I moved here 4 years ago with my two girls and the community has welcomed us with open arms. According to the parents at my children’s school, the religious school is awful. There are lots of complaints about the staff and the woman who runs it. Maybe if there is a changing of the guard, the state of things will change? Until then, there are better programs out there. I’m researching where my son and daughter will go and this is what I have gathered so far. Looking into Emanu-​El, Park Avenue, Steven Wise and KJ next. Please review them if you have any feedback.
