The venue suffers acoustically and is run-down, although clean. But I am a strong supporter of community theatre and community art projects so it still deserves at least 3 stars.

Saw a great Fringe show here and the space(a large room in a repurposed school or administrative building) worked for the show. I’m not sure if the staff works for Fringe or the venue, but they were rather nasty, shushing us downstairs and herding us like cattle into the upstairs destination. Not very welcoming, and leaves a bad impression of your overall operation.

From the outside looking in you would think that Teatro LATEA is actually a school and not a theater located in the Lower East Side. However, once inside the space is broken up and used by many groups within the community, as well as young artists. I’ve actually gone to Teatro LATEA twice before for an annual coquito contest where there was lively music and Puerto Rican artists displayed their paintings. Last week I went and attended a spoken word event held there. This location is actually near a couple of train lines, including the F and M, and is fairly easy to get to. I will continue coming here for events in order to support young & emerging artists.

This is a great building/venue overall in the sense that it allows a lot of community groups and young artists to strut their stuff. The La Tea theater space within that building though is a space for watching a play, but it’s too hot in there and the airconditioners/fans make so much noise when they are on that you can’t hear the actors.
