My family wanted to have an Indian meal while they were visiting me in NYC. I made a booking here with the Unilocal review system for 7.30. We turned up right on time, but they didn’t have a table. They sort of just didn’t talk to us… we asked how long it would be and everyone just kept walking past us, it was quite rude. We were then instructed to speak to the manager, and the manager said(quite aggressively!) «You’re 10 minutes early, your reservation is for 7.40!», so I showed her the email, but she just walked off. We tried to ask how long the wait was for and she just ignored us. She even walked right by us as we were asking her. Really really awful service, we would have waited but since they were so rude we left. If they’d said something like«I’m sorry we had a mistake in our reservation system, it’ll be 10 minutes» it would have been fine, but they were just horrible. So, don’t book reservations here and don’t expect them to help you at all. We ended up going to Savoury a few blocks away which had terrific food and lovely people.

Came here yesterday with a group of coworkers. They serve wine and beer here. I had the sparkling wine which is listed as a small bottle on the menu, but only received one flute. Then I had the chardonnay. Both were too sweet(not listed in the description) and not so great. My coworkers orders red wines and thoroughly enjoyed them though. The food was a’plenty, garlic naan galore. The paratha bread(my favorite, and a must whenever I get Indian food) was good, although super greasy. Had to ask for extra napkins to dab off the over abundant ghee. The appetizers might have been the best part. We gorged on them. The vegetable samosa was bomb. So delicious! Nice and crispy. The vegetable pakora was use as good, especially the chickpea and onion fritters. I could go back just for another round. When it was time to order, we traveled the menu. Tandoori shrimp, fish, and lamb chops. A few peers of chicken tikka masala, and I(pescetarian) had the bharta eggplant dish. Everyone loved their food. The curries were sweet and creamy. The meat and fish well seasoned. I ate so much that I felt like throwing up after. This is a good thing. It meant that once I started, I could not stop. Needless to say, we took some food to go and did not order dessert.

The food is ok, but the establishment charges $ 15 – 16 for the meats and charges you separately for the rice/naan. The portion size for the meat is small which doesn’t justify the $ 15 – 16 charge. This was not indicated on the menu nor were we verbally advised. When we pointed this matter out when we received the check we were told this is a new practice of charging the rice separate. The manager did remove the charge for the rice after some lengthy discussion. Either reduce the price of the meats or increase the portion size…

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. In town to go to the museum of natural history with another family and chose this restaurant as it was close by and rated well in Unilocal.Ratings were correct. I give it a 5 as we had an awesome experience here and would highly recommend to others.

Really good chicken vindaloo take out and nice naan bread. Food came quickly too. Swagat is better than most of the other UWS Indian restaurants in my opinion.

Visited this place for a late dinner on Wednesday evening, and there was plenty of seating. The food was decent, but the portions were on the smaller side given the price. Also, rice has to be ordered separately. The garlic naan was good, and I’d recommend it!

It is been a long time since my boyfriend and I had Indian food. On a cold night the spices of Indian food was the right formula to warm us up. The Lamb and chicken shahi korma were prepared excellent. The food simply melted in our mouths. Super tasty, flavored, and fantastic! Definitely going to come back!

The restaurant does not allow you to order under $ 50 for dinner. The dishes were on an average $ 15 – 20. My girlfriend and I went there for dinner on a Monday and wanted to share a dish since most Indian dishes are a lot of food for just one person. We were told that we would need to order a minimum of two dishes and have the check to be at least $ 50. I’m Indian and been to a lot of Indian restaurants. I’ve never been forced to order a certain amount. It was just odd that a place that had an occupancy of 20% were setting rules as though they were an pretentious upscale club. So naturally we left without ordering.

Had a take out last night. The food was not good at all. We got the lamb samosas which were kinda dry. We also got lamb rogan josh curry and lamb korma as main dishes and the lamb in both dishes was horrible! With the competition in the neighborhood I was expecting so much more!

Swagat is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the city. Love the variety of flavorful of dishes that you might not find at your standard Indian restaurant and so many vegetarian options. A large group of us came here and experienced very good service. Some of our favorite dishes were: — lasuni gobi(tangy cauliflower) — holy crap just writing about this cauliflower makes me drool. it’s tangy with some spice to it, seriously get this cauliflower. it’s the MVP of the meal. — samosas — lamb kebab — vegetable makhani — garlic naan — buttery and delicious I will say it’s a bit on the pricy side for a casual Indian restaurant, but I’d go back any time.

Came here with a party of four. Food is pretty good and comes out quickly. Service is so-so. A little slow once the food is delivered and it can be hard to get the attention of the waiter. The food is good enough that this shouldn’t deter you from going here, though. Menu is pretty extensive and prices reasonable for this part of town.

For $ 23 you get four to five 1″ in size very over cooked(we’re talking 50 chews before you can swallow) pieces of lamb jerky in a semi-spicy vindaloo sauce and two gummy ‘vegetable’(read: potato with a few peas) samosas. To make the process before the food all the more interesting, while I was waiting for my take out order the hostess came over smiling and said ‘Want some Naan? Let me give you some Naan too.’ Instinctively I said ‘yes’ assuming it was an offer of kindness to counter the wait I was experiencing; not the case, a few minutes after the naan ‘offer’ I enquired if it was being added to my bill, the answer ‘only FOUR extra dollar!’ followed by four fingers so I would know that it cost less than a full hand. With this new knowledge, I asked her to remove it from the order and was treated with a scowl for the subsequent 20 minute wait. Fast forward to the next morning(today) and I’ve felt incredibly sick prompting a run to the pharmacy and another $ 17 bucks spent on recovery(we’ll chalk that to the Swagat experience, bringing my bill up to $ 40 for the lamb jerky). Perhaps they try to push the naan so it sucks up whatever bacteria is in the food?

I have eaten at several Indian restaurants in NYC, some of them being Michelin stars. This restaurant is close to my brother’s house, so we decided to give it a try. Its a small place, and the seating is tight. Here is what we ordered: – Aloo Papri Chat: DELICIOUS!!! The papri is the traditional papri, and not the tortilla types, that most Indian restaurants have to offer. – Lasuni Gobhi: DELICIOUS! This was perfectly flavored and cooked. I wish they had used a little less tomato, but it was amazing nonetheless. – Navrattan Korma: This is mediocre. I have had better at other restaurants. – Malai Kofta: This was mediocre too. – Roti: The roti is of good size, but was a bit dry for my liking. Overall, I felt that the appetizers were amazing, but the main course dishes were average. I would definitely give it a try, but there are tons of Indian restaurants with better food quality in NYC.

Totally coming back. Solid food all around– haven’t had anything this good since I was in London. They did my saag paneer just right. Love the Rosemary topping on the naan. Great deal on the vegetable samosas(2 for $ 5). It is dark of you’re not close to the window. Kid friendly– staff is great.

Good food for a reasonable price in a comfortable environment. The saag paneer and chicken tika were both excellent. I’ll definitely be back.

The service was friendly and attentive, the bricks were exposed, the lights were dim. Swagat means«welcome» in(I think) Punjabi, and this is a nice little neighborhood restaurant serving a typical North-Indian menu. Dish notes: — The saag paneer was solid, as was the parantha(a flaky, multi-layered flat bread). — The lamb bhuna was also solid, but the lamb ought to have been more tender. — The curry sauce in the Vegetables Makhani was more of a tomato sauce, and different than other Makhani dishes I’ve had. It wasn’t bad – it’s tough to dislike creamy tomato sauce, I think – but it was like I’d gotten a different dish than I’d ordered.

I’ve had better Indian food for a lesser price. But maybe that’s because I just came from Chicago, where we have a big Indian population along Devon Ave. We got some naan, the Chicken Tikka Masala Curry and the Mattar Paneer, which has these cheese cubes. The curry sauces itself was very good, and naan is hard to mess up, but the chicken in the tikka masala was dry and did not taste very good.
