Before Sushi Ko first came onto the scene a few years back, it replaced the very Japanese Fukumatsu( ), a bustling spot for all things from ramen to izakaya. There were Japanese folks greeting you at the door, along with an ambiance(music, décor, vibe) that felt like something out of Japanese tour book. Once they turned the keys to the now Sushi Ko, the world of Chino-Sushi came into play and with that came super fast delivery, questionable sushi execution, and our fail safe AYCE(all you can eat) deals. At first, things were looking good. There were as many as 3 – 4 sushi chefs plating and styling all sorts of rolls and the food was above par. At $ 23 for a myriad of items, the AYCE deal was solid and sustainable for a few months. But with fewer and fewer people coming in the door, the sushi chefs went from 4 to 1 and the delivery count went higher and higher. The quality took a hit and the Chino-Sushi curse was in full effect — now it’s just a farm of delivery induced mediocre grade sushi. The price might be inexpensive, but that doesn’t excuse poor form. Service was never a strong point and the current crew at Sushi Ko reflects it. Phone orders are understandably rushed and when they are crowded, they struggle with getting food in a timely manner to the tables. When you have a limited staff working the counter, the food feels ridiculously slow. I imagine there is a similar feeling when it comes to the delivery.

Takeout review: I got the chirashi which is sashimi with rice and picked vegetables. The sushi was not very fresh and on the slight side of mushiness from a texture perspective. The rice was sprinkled with sesame seeds and pickles and was very yummy.

This place is awful. Ordered the bento box for lunch, and not only did they not make a substitution I requested, the chicken was so rubbery, I couldn’t eat it. When I called to complain, they would not send me new food, just more of the gross chicken. Extremely disappointing, even the miso soup was bad.

I base this review solely on their delivery service and not a dine-in experience. I have ordered from Sushi Ko for lunch a number of times already, and so far have not encountered any issues. In fact, it might be one of the cheapest, most decent sushi available in midtown East. The delivery service is always on time, and even if they are a bit late, I just give them a call. It’s hardly the $$$$ as indicated under their business info. I compare this sushi to a lot of different places in my touristy surroundings, and comparatively, Sushi Ko is not that bad. They have lunch specials from 11PM — 3PM. I usually order their Chirashi bowl($ 11.95) or 2 or 3-roll maki combo for($ 9.95-$ 11.95). They also offer teriyaki bento boxes. I think their best deal is the Chirashi. I haven’t encountered any Chirashi below $ 19 around this area, but if I do, it’s usually the pre-packaged ones that aren’t much better. It comes with a very good amount and variety of sashimi served with a side of seasoned rice. The maki roll combo allows you to choose the type of rolls. I usually just go for the spicy tuna, eel avocado, and yellowtail with scallion, and those options are pretty safe. The sushi isn’t mind-blowing, but it certainly gets you through lunch time just fine. The perk is the cheap pricing. They also give you salad with dressing plus a miso soup with every lunch order. I appreciate the fact they don’t cheap out on you with the soy sauce. They give plenty of Kikkoman soy sauce packages with your order. I don’t think Sushi Ko entirely deserves the 2 stars on here, but again, I speak for only their delivered form. I do find it strange though that Sushi Ko has a 5-star rating on Seamless. Aside from that fact, I haven’t had any outstanding issues with the food or their delivery service so far. I probably won’t try their dine-in experience any time soon mainly because I know of better sushi around this area. Nonetheless, it’s a great choice for lunch if you are looking for something more affordable with regards to sushi. I can advise that the best time to order from them is after 1:30PM because they will be less busy.

Oh. My. God. Did. I. Just. Pay. 20. Dollars. For. Two. Rolls. Of. Sushi. Smaller. Than. The. Size. Of. My. Palm. Yes I did and I am very upset. Delivery was 20 min late. Two rolls of sushi looked like one, size-wise. I paid 20 dollars for an appetizer, basically. UUGGHHHHH.

I would not have believed it had I not experienced it for myself, but like other reviewers, I had a wretched delivery person — totally off the wall/crazy! I ordered through seamless based off the reviews on their service — the food was delicious, but never again if I have to deal with their crazy delivery people! After 15 minutes of trying to explain where the building was, he finally found it and then argued that I gave them the wrong address!!! I couldn’t believe it! I even tried to explain the specific instructions I included in my order to help locate our building, which to their benefit can be tricky, but not with my explicit instructions! To be berated like I didn’t know my own address was ridiculous! Needless to say, I didn’t bother tipping!

I have ordered from this restaurant many times and never had one even remotely negative experience. They are always on time and my sushi has always been incredibly fresh — actually some of the freshest in the city and I order a lot of sushi! In fact, I was on a binge for awhile where I ordered sushi from pretty much every Japanese restaurant on Seamless and Sushi Ko easily rated in my top 3 as far as freshness. I always order a salmon avocado roll and the salmon is always gleaming and melts in my mouth along with the avocado which has never been anything other than the vibrant, silky avocado one would hope to see in their sushi. Today I ordered their salmon teriyaki bento box, which is a great deal at under $ 9. The salmon was perfectly cooked with a nice crispy skin and a mellow teriyaki sauce. Their shu-mai is good and crispy. Nothing here is overly salty, including the miso soup which I am accustomed to finding so salty that this particular one confuses my tastebuds. «Is this miso soup?» they ask. «It does not taste like a bucket of salt and MSG!» But then my brain replies, «Thank you!» I have also tried their BBQ squid appetizer. Succulent, tender squid in a really excellent sauce. I highly recommend it. Basically, I have not yet tried anything here that wasn’t good, and the delivery has always been so prompt and so polite and so very far from being unpleasant that I wondered while reading previous reviews if those people had ordered from a totally different restaurant!(Oddly, this place gets five stars on Seamless with close to 500 reviews — a far cry from the rating here on Unilocal where it has less than 20.) I will definitely keep trying my luck at Sushi Ko!

Generally I have been pleased with the food and service of Sushi Ko and have ordered from them several times, but after today I will never order from them again and strongly recommend that no one ever do so. The delivery person did not come to the lobby of my building, I spent 20 minutes back and forth going downstairs to the lobby, coming back up to call the restaurant and coordinate with them where to find the delivery person(whom they kept assuring me was in the lobby and had been waiting there the entire time) and going back down only to find the delivery person was not in the lobby, nor according to lobby security had any delivery person arrived and/or left. I made 4 trips up and down from my office to the lobby to locate the delivery person. I finally walked outside and around the block to find the delivery person 1 block away from the building entrance. None of that would make me write to complain. It was the fact that the delivery person immediately began yelling at me and I feared that he would physically assault me which made me feel that I needed to notify Seamless. I refused to sign the order slip because he was yelling at me and I didn’t feel that he deserved the pre-submitted tip. Following my refusal he tried to grab me, when I entered the revolving door to my building to get away from him he entered the same compartment of the door as I was in and continued screaming at me. I fully believe that had building security not been present he would have physically touched me. I understand he wanted his tip but this behavior is unacceptable. I immediately called the restaurant to notify them of their delivery persons behavior at which point the person on the phone began arguing with me that my building security would not let delivery people in to the lobby and that caused the problem. First, this is not true as multiple other restaurants, ordered via Seamless, delivered to the lobby of our building today for other employees in my office. Second, even if it were true that does not permit the delivery person to yell at me, follow me, and cause me to feel physically threatened. Disgusted

I’m actually really surprised to see so many poor reviews– I thought the sushi was amazing! I got the 2 rolls lunch special from Seamless(spicy tuna and salmon avoc). they were about 10 minutes late but it was snowing/raining so I can’t really complain. I also got the seafood soup which was tasty… and the salmon avocado was one of the best rolls i’ve ever had! i’m definitely planning on ordering from here again! can’t speak for dine-in though

I ordered lunch special from this place through Seamless cuz we wanted to try something different. Despite the bad reviews regarding the delivery time, our food came in in a timely fashion. But then comes the worst part: Halfway through my salad, I found a piece of plastic in there. Everything went downhill from there. I could have called them and complained, but that already ruined my appetite. I moved on to the miso soup, and it was still meh! I did not finish my sushi either since it looks sloppy and has no taste. I wish I could give them –1 star for this! Now I’m not really surprised with the low-rating reviews they’ve got. Of course, this would be the first and last time ordering from this place. I still don’t understand why they’re still in business. Was it because people don’t know any better? Lesson learned: Don’t ever try to be a maverick and order food from a place that’s got two stars. You are guaranteed to get disappointed!

DONOTORDERFROMHERE My food didnt come after 30min so i called and they said it had left. 5 min later they called telling me it was delivered to a man with glasses. Great, they delivered my food to the wrong apt I guess. I asked how quickly they could get out another order since I was starving and now pissed. She said she had to make sure it was really delivered wrong because I could be lying and i could have already eaten it. REALLY??? you called me to tell me you delivered it wrong and then called me a liar?!! I asked for a refund and she said NO, because I probably already ate it. WOW DONOTORDERFROMHERE, You are taking a risk of paying for food that you won’t get!!! DONOTORDERFROMHERE DONOTORDERFROMHERE

Wow, I’m surprised from all the bad reviews. I ordered lunch through Seamless last week and I got the lunch special — 2 maki rolls(spicy tuna, salmon avocado). I was very surprised to see that it came with soup AND salad. I also ordered a Zaru Soba which was very refreshing. My delivery came in 15 minutes which was very fast! The rolls were bigger than I expected and were very fresh and I was very content by my meal. I do, however, agree with the warm sushi. They shouldn’t pack the sushi on top of the soup — that’s why it was warm. But other than that, I have no complaints.

I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t check Unilocal first. My coworker and I ordered lunch from here today. $ 8.95 for any two rolls with soup and salad? cool count us in! Over an hour for delivery? eh, but it is Friday so we can’t really complain. Their spicy tuna roll was very good, but neither of us cared for the spicy yellowtail roll. It had a very fishy taste to it and we couldn’t finish it due to the gag reflex. I won’t be ordering from here again.

Would be 0 stars if that was an option. Ordered delivery and received truly terrible, chunky, near spoiled sushi. Called and asked for a refund, and to return the entirety of the meal. They refused. If you are looking for really gross, disgusting sushi then this is your place.

This concerns a delivery. Raw salmon in the sushi was chunky and hard to chew. Not a good sign of freshness. The teriyaki salmon was very thin and burnt more than cooked.

one starHard to give a rating. Food is not horrible. It’s just not fulfilling especially when you had your heart set on having Japanese food, but you’ll definitely get overstuffed on the lunch bento special with their soups and rice and salad that comes with it. I got the beef teriyaki bento. Beef itself was not done teriyaki style which was disappointing — it was more like a Chinese version of beef I usually have drenched in sauce. California roll was probably the best out of the meal except it came in four tiny pieces. Maybe I should’ve just ordered sushi rolls? 4stars for lunch update from last review to give it another chance– Love their sashimi lunch special-fresh and good variety. It comes with rice, soup, salad – not bad for lunch. Had it twice and it’s been consistent. Dumplings are pretty good and not the crispy type.

I’ve ordered take-out here before, but tonight was the first time I ate-in there with friends. The restaurant was completely empty when we went there at 6pm. We decided to go with this place because of their special, even though the ambiance was zero. They have a $ 24 all-you-can-eat sushi deal(and $ 37 for all-you-can-drink), but you have to pay $ 1 for special rolls, and appetizers are not included. The sushi was standard, but it’s definitely quantity over quality. Given that NYC is expensive, this is a pretty good deal if you’re really hungry(for sushi), but not if you want a dining experience.

This restaurant took over our beloved Fukumatsu(our go-to neighborhood spot for japanese) which closed down this past summer. Completely different atmosphere. No typical Japanese welcome at the door or cute, little old Japanese man behind the sushi bar anymore(the staff was conversing in Mandarin instead). The menu only has the usual cookie-cutter options like the typical sushi rolls and teriyaki entrees, but the food is made okay(not amazing, not horrible). I would give the place 2 stars just because it has such poor, almost depressing ambience(was dead on a Friday night at 7 pm… although this may be bc it’s rather new and people don’t know about it). But the food is decent and our host/waiter was so friendly. I hope they find some way to improve.
