Staghorn has closed, after 30 years in Kips Bay. Sad.

There are basically no card stores in this area, so Staghorn Ltd gets four stars in my book for just being plain old convenient. The card selection is really quite nice, and there are a bunch of unique handmade cards as well as a few from Papyrus. Most sell from $ 3 – 6, which in New York isn’t entirely unreasonable. Honestly, you could probably find a card to satisfy just about anyone. As far as the gifts go, it’s just the same old stuff like trinkets and soaps and candles, but it serves its purpose. What’s really great though is the gift wrap section, since the other day I was in a birthday fix and had to buy wrapping paper and ribbon asap with no place to go within walking distance except Staghorn. While not super cheap, they have some very pretty papers and decorations. Success!

Over the past year, this has become my go-to card store. It’s not your generic Hallmark, and the selection, while not massive, is more unique than plenty of other similar stores I’ve browsed in. There are a number of off-beat, quirky, or profanity-laden cards, and there are plenty of handmade cards too. My favorites are the blank cards with photographs on the front.(I’m not a fan of cheesy sayings in cards.) The prices aren’t great, but they’re not non-great either. The handmade cards are in the $ 3.50 range. Anyway, other than a burning desire for a good crop of greeting cards, I don’t expect much from a stationary store. If I can find a unique card, I’m happy. Staghorn sells those. I’m happy.

I have to say I’m always shocked when I can get a first review in this town. I think San Francisco has nothing left but yea me! Don’t go. In the hood and want to waste time? Fine. Otherwise, don’t go. Same old stuff, not very friendly owner or manager and nothing truly special.
