St Paul’s Chapel of Trinity Church

This Church is where the 1^st Presidential (George Washington) gathering occurred in prayer for our beloved country. Not to pas a bill, or vote… but to pray for our country and dedicate our nation to GOD. This is consecrated ground, not just architecture… The capitol was lower Manhattan NYC, ground zero…1879 Washington swears on the Bible, giving first presidential address to America. Giving Glory to GOD. Dedicating America to GOD.
Warning America’s blessings come from God and If America were to ever turn from God we will suffer as Israel did. Israel who claimed to «rebuild» in defiance without God without acknowledging his blessings upon them… full of PRIDE and Self… how mighty they are… instead of how great God is. 911 was a harbinger, a warning to shake us up… to return to God and rebuild with him. Alone in our arrogance, we were shaken again by the collapse of our economy 2008. In Jesus name may we all bow down, repent and give praise and glorify God as our foundation. Amen.

I have been to this church every time I have been to New York City. This is a fantastic place to look at history and beautiful scenery.
The only drawback of this church is that it is located in the area where the ⁹⁄₁₁ attacks happen. Being in this area can made the experience a little emotional, knowing that I am near where it all happened. It can be hard at times to look past that. When I concentrate on only the church, it is a magical visit.
I love that this place has done a terrific job at maintaining the 18^th century architecture, therefore keeping the historical aspect of it alive. I love walking through the indoor and the outdoor portions of it. Everything about this place is beautiful and breathtaking! Such beauty includes, the chandeliers, the wood work, the religious artifacts, the photos, just to name a few. I never fail to leave the place in awe no matter how many times I go there.
The indoors part has a lot of stories about some of the historical events that have occurred in the church. They are all written well, and they are always interesting. Every time I read these stories, I learn something new. This remains true no matter how many times I come here. The outdoors has several relic tombstones that look gorgeous. I never get tired of looking at them. One of the tombstones is that of Alexander Hamilton. Rumor has it that Pres. Benjamin Harrison has an unmarked spot, but I have yet to confirm if that is true.
Though this church is a major tourist attraction, it has never gotten overly crowded. I have never had a problem with being able to walk around the fellow tourists. I do not know if it is the employees that keep control of this part or if it is the tourists who do it themselves. Either way, it is refreshing to be able to look around and not have to worry about too many people getting in my way.
The employees are always friendly and resourceful. They have been great with answering any questions I may have. There are some employees that have told me some great historical stories that are not written on any of their posters. They have also been resourceful with anything I may have in mind. Therefore, I have always felt comfortable approaching the employees.
When I am in New York City and want to look at beautiful and historical architecture, I will continue keeping this place a priority. I highly recommend this place to anybody who likes history and loves New York City.

Beautiful colonial church just steps away from the World Trade Center. There was an event happening when I went by recently, so we could only look at the cemetery and the outside of the building. I’ve been inside before, though, and it’s majestic but understated, unlike the other churches (two of them cathedrals) I visited in NYC. A must if you’re into churches or ⁹⁄₁₁ memorials.

It is incredible to look out from this church and see the the one world observatory building and how close the two towers stood considering this church was left physically undamaged! Have a walk through the garden and stop inside, when I visited a lady was playing in the piano which gave a great ambience to the church, as expected the sense of tranquil and peace is overwhelming such a calm place to spend a few minutes outside there hustle and bustle of the city! Take time to look at the great work undertaken here after the ⁹⁄₁₁ incident it is truly mind blowing reading the stories and you can also pay your respects at the memorial still in place.

My rating is low only because I found it depressing. The inside is all dedicated to those that lost their lives at the WTC. I brought my friend in September. She was visiting from out of town. It was a new experience and memorable for her.
The historic cemetery is nice. The gift of the bell and dedication is really nice. It was nice to know they let people inside inside the Chapel. Many people want to remember their loved ones.
If you visit the WTC Memorial and Museum you should come to St. Paul’s. There isn’t a charge. You can donate in the donation box if you like.

Standing in front I welled up in tears. I had visited once right after ⁹⁄₁₁.
There’s a heavenly reason this church stood tall and strong. I will go back tomorrow Sunday morning. The feeling of peace overwhelms me! The comfort I get is priceless! I thanked the 3 NYC police that stood near by for their service. Thank u all the police the firemen the volunteers and all who came together that day

A great church near City Hall and also right next to the new World Trade Center.
There is also a small cemetary right next to the church where a number of prominent people were buried.
During September 11, 2001 the church served the American people and in continues to serve both the people and their souls now.

St. Paul’s Chapel of Trinity Church is a registered historic landmark of U.S. Department of Interior opened in 1766, Colonial-​era of original thirteen U.S. states and still in continuous use. Visitors can visibly see President George Washington’s pew. It survived historical New York City events: fire of 1766, host of Inauguration to George Washington’s presidency, survivor of September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and for eight months was a site of rest and refuge for recovery workers from the WTC site. Photos, description of this chapel’s vital presence for recovery workers’ immense efforts including prayers, and messages on paper and ribbon of hope and healing are exhibited. «Unwavering Spirit» is a firefighter’s uniform with boots covered with debris. There is a September 11, 2001 altar entirely devoted to prayers, messages, hopes, wishes, and encouragment. The spirit is prominent, strong and emotional as it triggered my own personal September 11, 2001 experience of working nearby at 2 Wall Street, New York, NY. In stillness of meditation, St. Paul’s Chapel is a good place for quietness as can ponder thoughts into infinity.
The interior is beautiful with high ceiling of white pillars and chandeliers. The ground is a small cemetery dating back to Colonial-​era where visitors can walk through at select times– peacefully and with respect. St. Paul’s Chapel may be a chapel not a church as to a clinic is not a hospital and a college is not a university, but this chapel is very active with the Civic Center Downtown community for worship, community events, cultural activities, and sometimes small concerts.

Esta pequeña iglesia enfrente de Ground Zero se ha convertido en un lugar conmemorativo y un homenaje a todos los que ayudaban a las víctimas de los ataques de 11 de septiembre.
Además, es la iglesia más antigua de Nueva York, el edificio público todavía en uso más antiguo y el lugar donde George Washington rezó el día de su investidura. Un edificio bonito con un cementerio viejísimo que contrasta con los alrededores modernos del Financial District.
Visité St Paul’s Chapel por primera vez poco después del 11S, cuando las obras de reparación y desescombro todavía estaban en marcha y se veían los daños en los edificios cercanos.
Allí estaba la iglesia, en medio de la destrucción, totalmente intacta. A pesar de la cercanía no se había roto ni un cristal. Así que se convirtió en refugio para los miembros de los equipos de rescate. Los bomberos venían para rezar, para encontrar un poco de paz, para descansar un rato en los bancos de madera…
Pues en mi primera visita… las vallas estaban tan llenas con placas de policías y bomberos de todo el mundo, peluches, flores, homenajes de todo tipo que las capas de debajo ni se veían. Se respiraba mucha tristeza fuera y dentro de la iglesia, y creo que nadie que se acercaba salió de ahí sin estar muy afectado incluso mucho tiempo después. Nunca voy a olvidar el dibujo de un niño con el mensaje «Feliz Navidad en el cielo, papá.»
Cuando fui por segunda vez, como ya habían pasado unos años, el ambiente había cambiado: ahora es mucho menos impactante (menos mal), pero igualmente conmovedor.
Dentro de la iglesia ahora hay una exposición con las placas, con piezas de uniformes de bomberos, fotos de víctimas, etc., muy interesante de ver.
A pesar de ser un lugar donde van muchos turistas, es un oasis de tranquilidad y paz.
Muchos dicen que les emociona más esta iglesia que el nuevo September 11 Memorial & Museum, quizá porque St Paul’s Chapel era un lugar de homenaje espontáneo en vez de un monumento artificial.
Altamente recomendable para hacerse una mínima idea de aquellos días después del 11.09.2001.

I am so glad we accidentally stumbled in to this little church. It is right across from Ground Zero so it was bound to be impacted by the events of ⁹⁄₁₁. You can see what a place of refuge it was. I was of course moved by the memorials and photos of the victims. The thing that really stood out for me was the bench that was preserved with all of the marks from the firefighters and workers. The pews were scarred from the belts, buckles, etc that they were wearing as they slept on the pews. For some reason it just really got to me — like the scars of the whole thing were ingrained in the church itself. On another note, it is a beautiful old church where George Washington worshiped. There’s also a lovely little cemetery from that time period in front. If you are already in the area looking at the ⁹⁄₁₁ memorial, it’s a worthy stop.

We stopped by St. Paul’s Chapel at opening (10am) before our 10:30 slot for the Ground Zero ⁹⁄₁₁ memorial. Entrance to the chapel is free; but there is a donation box if you wish to contribute. The chapel was turned into a base of operations for medical staff to treat people after the ⁹⁄₁₁ attack. Recovery workers also slept in the pews and on the floor for a few hours to gain enough strength to go back out and find more people trapped under the wreckage. Their are lots of artifacts, pics, and notes in the Chapel that brought tears to your eyes and made you reflect on that sad day. I would definitely recommend visiting this church in conjunction with ground zero. While we thoroughly enjoyed visiting ground zero and paying homage to the brave men and women who died on that day; I actually enjoyed the chapel more because of the pictures, letters, and artifacts that payed tribute to the fallen. This place is a MUST visit!
TIPS: Definitely book your tickets and day/​time for ground zero online weeks in advance if possible; they fill up quickly.

Es ist schon eine tolle sche diese kleine Kirche inmitten der großen Gebäude zu sehen. Ein moment des innehaltens ist hier geboten. Diese Kirche ist von außen wie von innen ein großartiges Bauwerk. Das hier ist ein platz an dem wir bei jedem New York Aufenthalt immer wieder besuchen.

Standing in front of the St Paul’s, I am looking at the sky. Peaceful sky. The spire of the oldest church in the city silhouettes against the blue, and next to it, new Freedom Tower shining in morning sun rays.
Old and new. Past, present and future.
Sometimes, history is what we learn from text books.
And sometimes, history is what we live through.
St. Paul’s Chapel was standing proud thru September 11, lending helping hand, offering shelter and support. Standing proud still, history in place. And here we are, standing next to it, hearts filled with memories and love for this city and it’s people.
Stop. Look. Remember.

A historic church, made even more so by events from ⁹⁄₁₁. This church was a place of refuge for many firemen and other responders as well as survivors of that terrorist attack, as it miraculously survived the attack and building collapse of towers 1 & 2.
A solemn place of worship that is still in use today. George Washington had a pew here, which is preserved today. You can pray at the altar area.
It now houses a lot of ⁹⁄₁₁ memorabilia. There were Docents conducting tours around the building. Three unisex restrooms available .
Right at the front entrance is the Bell of Hope, donated to New York City by the Mayor of London on September 11, 2002 to mark the one year anniversary of the attacks on The World Trade Center Complex. It has rung on the anniversary every year since and has also been sounded for the bombings in London and Madrid. The bell in located in St Paul’s Chapel’s yard or cemetery across from Ground Zero.

A good reminder of what we often take for granted: safety, security and peace.

I have long been a fan of this historic chapel. The year prior to ⁹⁄₁₁ I ran an outside sales team and my base was right outside the gates facing the WTC. I would often stop in to feel the history of the place or to walk through the cemetery and think about how long ago these people lived and how different this city was back then.
After ⁹⁄₁₁ the place has a whole other meaning, it was used as a triage, equipment storage and I am sure a place of rest and peace for the thousands of workers and responders during those dark days. I remember coming here the Thanksgiving after and seeing all the banners and signs all the people from across the world had left here.
Now it serves as a place of remembrance of those dark days in our countries and cities history. I came here with a friend visiting from Texas on the same day we went to the ⁹⁄₁₁ memorial and I felt much more here. Seeing the pictures, the ribbons and all in such a setting really hit home without all the security and cattle like herding of the memorial site. I particularly felt the banner from the people of Oklahoma, a state which sadly we have a kinship with in knowing the pain of tragedy.
I suggest all New Yorkers make a trip here for both the ⁹⁄₁₁ connection and the history of the place. To stand in the place George Washington took his inaugural speech is really something special.

With its beautiful stained glass windows and golden doors with reliefs, this is an impressive church. It is an ideal place to settle down and take in some quiet time to pray. There is a small museum on the bottom floor. It has a room inside to pray and have solitude with your thoughts. There are envelopes to donate money to the hurricane relief.

My 88-​year old Grandmother is visiting from Poland for the summer so we went on a day long excursion of churches, masses, memorials, brunches and parks in the city.
We started the day off with this church and I might have been converted! No, not religiously. But I think I’m now able to sing in public! The music director involved everyone attending mass (the ⁹⁄₁₁ displays surrounding the inside of the church were still open to the public as mass commenced) and had us practice some lines, «Alle, Alle, Alleluja». I got all into it. I really enjoyed the female priests sermon — she talked in the same way as I imagine she would if you saw her on the street and she started to tell you about her day. It immediately got my attention.
Go for the history — George Washington prayed here!
Go for the memorials to the victims and relief workers of ⁹⁄₁₁.
Stay for the songs. Sing your little heart out, everyone else will too.

History trivia: George Washington, along with other US Congress members, worshipped at this church. St. Paul’s is one of the oldest churches in NYC built in the late 18^th century, and it houses the remembrance of ⁹⁄₁₁.
After my ⁹⁄₁₁ Memorial Museum visit, I came here, as my own tribute to fallen heroes. Outside the church in the courtyard is a grave. Not sure if it’s a real grave or not, if so, then that’s sort of creepy to be taking pictures of the dead. But, I did so anyway.
When you walk in, there are countless pictures and memorandum of ⁹⁄₁₁ everywhere. St. Paul’s became the «central location,» for prayers and a place of refuge for New Yorkers after the attacks. Fitting, since the world trade towers are located a block away.
I sat in one of the pews and just looked at the alter. I saw an elderly woman get down on her knees and give a quick prayer. I closed my eyes too, and thanked god, the universe, whatever, for bringing me to this place.
I’ll be honest, this chapel is somber. No one spoke, it’s just that kind of place. The overall feeling is great sadness. So, I couldn’t stay inside for too long. After about 10 minutes, I left.

Vanessa Y. gave a great review of this place. We happened upon it when walking by and wasn’t sure we wanted to go in, but saw the ⁹⁄₁₁ displays in front and stopped to read and then realized the significance of this little church and the role it played that day. It miraculously survived ⁹⁄₁₁ but massive amts of debris littered the old grave yard, computers, papers, furniture. And the humane, voluntary relief ministry it served for 2 yrs after that for Ground Zero workers. It’s famous as the «Little Chapel that stood».
I felt humbled to learn that on April 30, 1789, George Washington took the oath at Federal Hall on Wall Street to become our 1^st President of the US and walked from there to St. Paul’s Chapel to attend services and pray. I was walking in his footsteps. They even have the pew he used, preserved for us to see. Inside are many reminders of the ⁹⁄₁₁ events. The names on the ancient grave sites are no longer visible as we walked around the outside grounds.
This little church also held the official memorial service for President Washington in 1799 and President James Monroe’s funeral service in 1831. A wonderful walk thru history.

This review isn’t for the cynics, naysayers or conspiracy theorist, but for regular people who were profoundly affected by the events of ⁹⁄₁₁. I’ve visited St. Paul’s several times since ⁹⁄₁₁. No matter how many times I’ve been in this hallowed space, it has never failed to elicit tears of sadness – and joy.
Located directly in front of the World Trade Center site, signs on the front gates proudly declare St. Paul’s to be: Manhattan’s Oldest Public Building, Witness to the Great Fire of 1776, Host to George Washington’s Inauguration and Survivor of the Terrorist Attack on September 11, 2001 – so much history for such a little church.
Inside, the church appears to be frozen in time. Not one wall is untouched by artifacts from that day. Set up like a museum with various exhibits, visitors are encouraged to walk the circuit, pause and contemplate. One exhibit that’s particularly moving is dedicated to the firefighters and first responders. Photographs show weary rescuers sleeping in their gear on the church’s pews – their hands and faces blackened by fire and soot. Some of the actual cots they rested on are still on display – complete with the teddy bears brought by kids to lay on their pillows. Behind glass is a pair of fireman boots with thick rubber soles that were burned nearly all the way through from navigating the burning debris until it hit skin.
In all this devastation, you literally feel rescued from the depths of sadness as you read that in the midst of all this, ordinary people pulled together to serve those who had given so much. Several walls of photographs show hundreds of nameless doctors, grief counselors, massage therapists, restaurant owners and other regular people who provided round the clock food, comfort and care to the heroes.
There’s also a collection of messages of support from school kids and people from around the world that once dotted nearly every square inch of the church. Though very sad, I enjoy visiting St. Paul’s because it’s a poignant reminder that miracles do happen – that even through a catastrophic day that took so many lives and brought down seemingly indestructible skyscrapers, a little, 250-​year old church could survive and mean so much to a city in mourning.
P. S. This church is also directly in front of the Stage Door Deli – the only area eatery to reopen immediately after ⁹⁄₁₁. Even though it was nearly destroyed, the owners, Greek immigrants, felt it was their duty to provide food and water to the rescue workers. Though it nearly bankrupted this family, they survived and are one of only two businesses that rebuilt and stayed. So please stop by, give ‘em a thank you (the owner is almost always there) and order an awesome corned beef sandwich.

I don’t know how you can not give this place 5 stars. This church has had a prominent role in our nations history since before the American Revolution. George Washington worshiped here and during September 11^th rescue workers used this as a place of refuge. This church is literally across the street from ground zero and came away practically unscathed.
Throughout the church is a history of the role this church played in the lives of many New Yorkers. This is definitely a must see place when visiting New York.

This is Manhattan’s only existing pre-​revolutionary (1766) church. Famous historical figures worshipped here including George Washington (he had his own pew!) and Benjamin Harrison.
The ⁹⁄₁₁ tragedy forever changed the role of St. Paul. It served as a refuge for the hundreds of firefighters, police, volunteers who were involved in the aftermath of ⁹⁄₁₁. Memorabilia such as letters, pictures, testaments, etc. are now displayed throughout the chapel. The city’s unwavering spirit and the American people’s compassion for each other are evident in the memoirs displayed here. It’s impossible not to shed a tear when you’re here.
Looking back at these, I still can’t believe that I stood at the WTC site one week before ⁹⁄₁₁ happened. I feel even more fortunate to have been back in SF already TWO days before terrorists struck.
Every time I’m in NYC, I always make it a point to go back to St. Paul. Not so I won’t forget, but so that I can remember.

Die St. Paul’s Chapel ist die einzige noch erhaltene Kirche aus der Kolonialzeit. Sie wurde in den Jahren 1764 – 66 erbaut und steht direkt neben dem Ground Zero. Hier suchten die Hilfskräfte Trost und Erholung nach dem Einsturz des World Trade Centers denn sie blieb unversehrt.
In der kleinen Kirche findet man einen riesigen Kristallleuchter. Der Innenraum ist farbenprächtig gestaltet und die Ausstellung Unwavering Spirit — Standhafter Geist dokumentiert die Arbeit der Kirche direkt nach dem Anschlag.
