Showtime has quite a few original series that I have watched/do watch. Dexter and Weeds are at the very top of the list. I actually own both of those series on bluray now. Some other favourites: United States of Tara, Nurse Jackie, and Shameless. Because it’s so easy to run to the Redbox now or stream a movie, I honestly can’t see having any premium channels for that reason. So my review is solely for the great original programming I feel Showtime puts out there for us, and they are doing a pretty darn good job. I’d say HBO definitely outshines them a bit with their original programming, but Showtime is certainly in the race!

This is average at the very best as we barely get to see any worth watching movies on it. Now that movies are streaming over net easily, this should be a basic cable and NOT premium at all!

Hmm let me think here… Weeds, Penn & Teller — Bullshit, and United States Of Tara! Yeah I would say Showtime is doing some good work!

Feature film lineups aside, with the exception of Dexter and Californication, the bodies of Showtime series that are not part of my channel surfing M.O. are stacking up. I have a tendency to prefer HBO’s overall programing with great original series such as Entourage, The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Deadwood, Sex in the City, Six Feet Under, Oz, Tell Me You Love Me, Autopsy, etc. Thus the 3⁄5 stars for Showtime — which I don’t consider a bad verdict for a network based solely on two programs. As a True Crime /CSI /Forensics junkie, it was the lure of Showtime’s original series ‘Dexter’(starring Michael C Hall of HBO’s Six Feet Under fame) that lead me to place them in my premium channel lineup in the first place. I’ve since witnessed two seasons of this little ‘slice of life’ and my plea on the charges of unnecessarily assaulting my entertainment budget is: not guilty! Bravo Showtime — hope you continue to ‘Sharpen the Saw’ between seasons and keep the series going strong. Dexter, is bloody brilliant! ;) So, if you are looking to add a 2nd or 3rd premium channel to your service, consider Showtime. If you can only opt for one or none, you might want to wait for the series to be available on DVD.
