Sayonara is great. They’re a jeweler«to the trade» and a little bit hard to find; they’re on the basement level of the New York Jewelers Exchange and through a couple of locked doors. They can size your ring for you while you wait, which got me to thinking this would be the best jewelry store for an eloping couple: buy your ring at any store upstairs – or here – get it sized at Sayonara, and get married at City Hall(actually 41 Worth Street; see my review.) Willie Schneier(see my review) is a great watchmaker, but didn’t want to be bothered with my Elgin pocket watch; the crystal broke, and he insisted it couldn’t be replaced because they aren’t making parts for the old watches.(This is mostly true: watches often have to be «cannibalized» to get parts that fit, as do old sewing machines and any old equipment that isn’t being manufactured anymore.) Sayonara is also great because they’re like a slice out of time; a windowless basement space where someone has clearly been smoking(shh! Don’t tell anyone!) and with brass ring blanks and other(non-precious) jewelry parts scattered about. Quick turnaround. A watchmaker who can repair the old watches – not just change your battery. And I had been here a few years ago, just to get a ring sized; they remembered me. That’s great.
