Sage Theater

They really need to get their act together especially in the front of house at this theatre space.
The guy downstairs at the door said the bar opened at 7 before an 8:00 show and that there were $ 4 beers and $ 6 cocktails. Got there at 7:15. Box office wasn’t up and running, bar didn’t open until 7:40 and even then it was without ice. And the price of a cocktail for theatre patrons is different than for that of the LOL Comedy room. $ 13 for house vodka. The front of house manager was there when I was contemplating an iceless cocktail and he at least let me have it at the $ 6 cost which was the most gracious move of the evening.
Then at intermission I decided to try for an cocktail with ice. But when I went to order, the person who needed to process the payment wasn’t around and so the bartender couldn’t do it for me. Then it was time for the show to start. So no cocktail. I guess it’s fine because it probably would’ve been a $ 13 drink anyhow.
At least the play I saw was good. Can’t say much for the management of the venue though.

I went to Sage for a Ukulele Meetup. I had no idea it was there even though I work a few blocks away. It ‘s a fantastic space with helpful, pleasant staff, a lovely stage, good lighting potential, and excellent sound system.
And it’s not far from my favorite pre– or post-​theatre restaurant, Ninos.

Unassuming, right in the middle of what would have been porno central pre-​Giuliani days, and incredibly normal theater space, I went here last night for the C.O.S.H. (Cracked Out Super Heroes) showcase, where they promoted their new comic as well as a new Troma film, Poultygeist, coming out soon.
You basically walk upstairs amidst the baggage and electronics and gift shops and it’s a quiet, low lit, but fairly spacious lobby/​party space, with a snack bar by the men’s bathroom down a ways. The performance space is quite large actually, for a place this size, and with all sorts of different ways to space it, with plateaus and railings and pianos and tvs and projection screen and whatnot, it seems like a really cool place. The way it was spaced was plain last night, but I’m sure they turn it into different layouts depending on the night.
Onto what they are about, and hey, I might just check it out next time. Sage caters to private events and parties and whatnot, but they also have their own lineup of interactive shows. They are a full service venue. Made solely for the purpose of getting business types to let loose and have fun, as well as anyone else who needs a jolt of humor or whatnot, their brochure tells the story of the leader of Sage Theater, as well as basically a vague but warm and inviting structure to their «shows» where audience participation is key, and with fun themes like «How to Talk to Men» and «What To Do With the Rest of Your Life», there’s just something feel-​good about it.
