I can’t judge the selections because every time I try to shop here, someone has either locked the door or is shuttering the gate. It doesn’t bode well that this«business» will be in operation long if they can’t be professional enough to stay open when customers need to buy something! The store lists its hours as being open until 9pm. So can someone explain, why I couldn’t get in at 750pm???

I recently moved to Harlem from Brooklyn, and had a hard time finding a good supermarket nearby… Key food bet. 139 and 140 on Lenox is terrible and I followed the old review of this ‘Pioneer’. And it was changed to ‘Fine Fare Super Market’ BTW, but not sure when this happened. Nonetheless, it is much better than Key Food! Fresh vegetables and price is great. I did not see a meat/fish counter, but they do have packaged meat and fish like a normal supermarket(I need to explore more). You need to check your shopping bags from other stores(if you are stopping here at the end of shopping spree) at the entry and they will give you a number like a coat check, which I never experienced in any other supermarket before… But not a biggie. This will be my favorite supermarket in the neighborhood until Whole Foods opens in 125th!

Don’t let the 3-star rating fool you! I like this store. It’s close to my apartment, the staff is friendly, the lines are always short, and some of their prices, espcially on meat and chicken, are actually very good. What sucks is the produce here. There are usually flies circling around the onions and potatoes, and a lot of the other veggies are decidedly lackluster. The other day I noticed they have a little stand of partially rotten vegetables for sale at a discount, which I thought was sort of charming and sort of gross. On my first few visits, I was surprised how limited the selection is, but now I know to only go here for the basics. Prices on non-generic grocery items are pretty steep. Like, Duane-Reade-level steep. But it’s much more quiet and calm here than other grocery stores in the area, so if you just need a few things, shop here and avoid the hypertension.

I generally like this store. It is smaller than I’d like, but has enough of everything to usually get what you need to make your meal. And it beats the HECK out of the Pathmark on 145. From my experience, the selection has been fresh, and checkout lines are not bad. I would give them 5 stars for being a welcomed light in the neighborhood, but their displayed and acted on store policy requiring an ID to use your credit card violates their agreement with both Visa and MasterCard, which makes it completely unacceptable. If someone educates themselves on the rules of the contract they signed and removes that policy, they have themselves a great place to shop!

I like a supermarket that tries to take care of it’s customers. This Pioneer Supermarket succeeds it that. I shopped there recently and complained to the manager about the lack of lo sugar or sugar free items. He took the time out to show me around the store and point out all of the sugar free or low sugar items for sale in the store. My only complaint is that because of the small size of the store, the variety of produce and other items is not as large as in bigger supermarkets. The deli department is also small but the staff is helpful and friendly. Sandwiches are moderately priced for the neighborhood.
