The vegetables are super large and fresh. There is less variety, but I feel they are fresher than Hong Kong Supermarket vegetables. The ginger is $ 1.20 a pound and they sell it in individual pieces whereas HK sells it in bags. Although, I sometimes cheat and just take buy the pieces that spilled out of the bags. The taro and daikon radishes always look beautiful whereas at HK, sometimes they look good, sometimes they don’t. Just point at what you want and pay in cash.

A great way to get fresh produce if you’re shopping at Po Wing Hong(which doesn’t sell it). You point out what you want, they weigh it and put it in a plastic bag, and you pay(cash only). They don’t have space to display everything on the storefront, so you can ask if they have something in the back(snow peas come to mind). Prices are comparable to nearby Hong Kong Supermarket, but generally speaking I’ve found fruits to be cheaper in HK and vegetables to be cheaper here. In most cases I also find the stuff here to be more fresh.

This fruit and veg. storefront is nearly identical, as far as prices and selection, to a host of shops and stands in the neighborhood — but this is the one I went to yesterday, so it gets a review! It’s worth going to Chinatown to pick up your veggies. I specifically went to pick up some ginger. At $ 1. a pound it was half the price, and both fresher and meatier than the ginger at my supermarket. The guy working the scale was helpful and not pushy.

During my weekly ritual of Yum Cha plus more, I came here to pickup some veggies. Price is reasonable as service is okay.

You want fresh produce but you cringe every time you walk into the grocery store and look at the prices. You’re like me. This is why I was overjoyed to discover Mee Li Fruits & Vegs., Co. Yes, that is exactly what the sign outside says. Sure, there are lots of produce stands along Canal Street, but this one has produce that is not questionable-looking and the best prices I’ve seen. For example: Oranges(large juicing oranges) 4/$ 1 Potatoes(large) $ 0.60/ lb Tomatoes(medium, firm, ripe) $ 1.50/ lb White onions(gigantic) $ 0.50/ lb Green beans(not gross and wrinkly) $ 1/TWO POUNDS!!! They have other produce inside that isn’t necessarily displayed outside. Just ask if they have what you want. It might be inside the store, though I think only staff are allowed in there.(Could be wrong; I didn’t try.) If you want firm, fresh zucchini the size of a small child for $ 1.20/ lb, I recommend the place on the corner of Elizabeth and Grand. Don’t know what it’s called, though.
