Historic Chess in NYC Located in on old townhouse on 10th street Marshall Chess Club is one, if not the oldest chess clubs in New York. Many classes are available for beginners, mostly for children, but lectures from grandmasters and other top players occur here as well. Of course many of these options are available for members only. If you are more of an experienced player there are many tournaments available on a weekly basis from blitz to G/120. You will face players rated from unrated to Grandmasters. The amount of experience you can gain from one tournament will be different every time, but very helpful. The average entry fee for non-members(tournaments) is about $ 40 for 4 games. It sounds expensive, but for about $ 10 a game it’s worth it. The biggest plus of Marshalls is the accessibility and ease of joining tournaments(most of the time) and having a wide variety of activities available to you. There are prizes for the individuals who finish with the best record, and best under a specific rating depending on the tournament. *Note* In order to join the majority of tournaments you have to be a member of the United States Chess Federation(USCF). The biggest flaw is the size. The space is limited and it can get cramped during larger events. The restroom is even smaller. It will be a little tougher for beginners entering the club due to the veracity of the competition. While everyone is friendly, the competition is fierce and t will be difficult to win early on, with limited chess experience. As they say though, you learn more from defeat than victory. Young or Old, Unrated or Grandmaster Marshalls Chess Club is a place where one can grow into the game and develop their skills over time. Losing to a 7 year old chess prodigy stings at first, but you get over it sooner or later. That usually happens when you lose to a 5 year old prodigy. Crying is the standard response. Most importantly come here to have fun.

What can I say, I went up a lot and the people are nicer the more you are here. The end of the month blitz events are legit and a lot of fun. Good crowd. 4.5.

Never thought I would be the first to review anything in Manhattan! I guess nerds usually arent«foodies»? Probably hubby’s fave place in the city. Everytime we go to Union Square to eat/play, we’ll then split up: I go north to shopping, while he goes south to play chess
