Really shocked that this park hasn’t been reviewed yet. it’s been around for years now. I used to frequent the parks that were in this location when it was next to the old Yankee stadium. I’d play some of the roughest, fastest, smallest-goal-ever soccer with the locals. I’m not much of a baseball guy, but I always imagined that there would be nothing cooler than growing up playing ball in the shadows of history. When they tore down the old stadium, and former recreational baseball fields I was saddened. I was leery of what they were going to do with the space once they built the new stadium. I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome; it took a few years to complete, but it was worth the wait. Macombs Dam Park is an activities mecca. Atop the parking garage, and adjacent area across from the new stadium, they’ve placed: 4 basketball courts, 2 large handball walls/tennis area, numerous grassy fields. Speaking of fields, it’s home to Joseph Yancy Track and Field, which is a ¼ mile track with a football(mostly soccer) field in the center. There’s even a set of bleachers with a nice bathroom setup around back. Plus tons of benches, tables and chairs strewn about for sitting. And much to the neighborhoods relief, they finally built a huge baseball field in place of the old stadium. Within it, is three separate diamonds– although they are closed on game days, when they cover it with an artificial surface and use it for extra parking . MDP is one of those hidden-in-plain-sight gems that a lot of the outer boroughs have. If you ever find yourself in this area for a game, do yourself a favor and cross the street and check out this Dam park.
