The drinks here are super cheap — $ 1 – 2 for a beer, $ 2.50 sake, $ 3 beer. This is why I come here with friends on a night we want to eat out but are trying to keep costs down. Otherwise, the food is simply not that good. It’s fine — you’re generally getting that Thai flavor, but it seems like there’s often something just a bit off — the flavors are not that complex, just kind of heavy handed and all tastes about the same, texture and taste wise. If you want to fill up and have more than a couple of drinks with your meal in a generally cute atmosphere, go to Lychee, but keep any expectations in check.

Thumbs up to this place. $ 1.50 Chang beer, $ 2 Saki, Food is great! There peanut dumplings are great. Located right off Ave A is prime location for eats and drinks. You cant go wrong for a bite to eat and throw some brews back. The place is pretty tight but once your settled in your good to go. Staff is always friendly, and the prices are perfect for this economy… Def a spot to add to your many destinations during the night.

Lychee is a decent Thai spot in the EV. Their prices are normal and their weeknight drink specials are great. I ordered the curry puffs app and the Massaman Curry entrée for my last visit. Generally, the texture of these curry puffs is the same wherever you go, but the dipping sauce definitely makes a difference. The curry was flavorful and not too spicy, but I wish it was served with something other than rice. The plate just looked bland. A friend ordered the drunken noodles and it was extremely spicy so beware! The ambiance and décor are really nice and the staff is friendly and attentive. Although I probably won’t frequent Lychee for their food, the menu holds its own. I’d definitely come back to drink though. Will be back!

Hey, I liked this place. Idk why you guys be hatin’ Thinking about it, I got better quality food here than I did the other day when I ordered in mock-Chinese food for about the same price, if not a smidgen cheaper. Soo… Idk man. I was sold with this restaurant’s generous helping of Drunk Man Noodles(~$ 9.50). You get a choice of veggies, duck, chicken, shrimp, seafood, and VEGGIE-DUCK to be mixed in with your noodles. Feelin’ adventurous, I decided to try the veggie-duck. HELLYEAH, I was impressed. It tastes like grilled something. maybe not duck, but some kind of meat, and it’s NUMMY! Me gusta. The place is kinda small. It’s rather quaint and modest. The furnishings are becoming of this small space — dark wood floors, tables, and chairs. A tidy small bar. Close quarters with your eating neighbors. And these great big pink mod-chic floral lanterns overhead to set a very mellow, quiet, and calming mood. Oh, and happy hour is quite nice. Mojitos for $ 4. Beers for $ 1.50. Not too shabby, I’d say. I’ll probably be back for a third round :)

Good spot for happy hour even when it’s not happy hour. I went to this place after hearing about its $ 1.50 beers from a co-worker. Went there on a Saturday night, not expecting them to have any drink specials. But they had the $ 1.50 Chang(Thai) beer and $ 3 sangrias!(Red or white). It tasted a little watered down, but it wasn’t since we saw them pour it straight from a box. But hey. For $ 3? That’s not bad at all! Especially since they put a good amount of fruit it in(I like my sangrias with lots of fruits) There were apples, lychees, pineapples and mangoes. On to the food. I ordered the drunken man noodles. Was aight. Wasn’t anything spectacular. The vegetable to noodle ratio is about 1 to 1 I would say. Don’t get it with chicken though, it was kind of dry. I like this place because it seemed really cozy. Oh and NOT filled with drunken people, unlike most other places on St. Marks. Also, it’s far enough away from the college crowd towards 3rd Ave, but close enough to the train. Would definitely go here again.

Funny how I walked by this place daily for a 1 ½ years and it never looked appealing — now it is my go to Thai. Solid Thai cuisine, some of the best I have had in memory. Reasonably priced overall with $ 1.50 beers on weeknights, not too shabby.

The most authentic and delicious Thai food I have found in Manhattan. $ 1.50 Chang beer or house wine. I wish they would start serving loti, then I would never leave. Menu highlights: 1) all of their curries(seriously) 2) pad Thai(best I have had in years)

You can’t put a sign outside your establishment saying: «Chang beer for $ 1.50» and then tell your customers: «Oh… that is just during the week… today it’s $ 4!» The sign didn’t mention it. So I left. I don’t need to taste their food/drinks, if this is the way they do business.

Great little spot. $ 1.50 beers? Yeah– I’m in. The food was pretty good. Not the best but definitely not the worst. I’d say 4⁄5 stars because it was good for a restaurant I came to only drink in. This was a yummy place. I am going to go back and try the Duck. Oh and the calamari was great too. The service was hit-and-miss in my opinion. They were super busy and did all they could to accommodate my friends and I(Like 4 – 5 of us). So. 5 Stars because they got me nice and drunk while well fed.

Oh Lychee! Your drunk man noodles with veggie duck can make any carnivore drool including my bf who frowns upon anything made with tofu normally. I particularly love this dish since it’s chock full of veggies, spicy and the noodles are chewy. Mmm. The portions are standard. Both times I was here, I ordered this dish. Yes, I love it that much. I’ve tried the Basil fried rice with chicken too. That was tasty and spicy as well. People who can’t tolerate spiciness, you’re warned! The décor is intimate and pretty nice with their huge red lanterns hanging over each table. There’s a bar on the left side of the room. Tried the Thai iced tea and lychee ice tea. Both are good except they should probably take the sugar down a notch. My only complaint is that they are understaffed. I came here on a Saturday night during my first visit and it took a while for them to take our order. They also didn’t refill my water. It was better during my second visit since it wasn’t as busy and my waiter constantly stopped by to check on us and refill our water.

It’s actually $ 1.50 beers, dollar sake and $ 2 wine– but really that’s a pretty good price in nyc! I got the drunk man noodles with chicken and my friend got one of the curries which was delicious. Both dishes were amazing — and how could I forget the peanut dumpling thing that we had for an app — that was like heaven in your mouth! I wanted to eat 10 of them.. . It’s a small place that fills up fast — the only complaint that I have is that they only had two servers and it was get their attn when you needed refills on drinks or the check. It is what it is however and it was good.

Yikes. Not a great dinner this evening! I love Pad Thai, so for me, passing on ¾ a plate means something was terribly amiss(in this case room temperature and probably day-old beef and an overall bland flavor). I also got Tom Kha which was pretty good flavor-wise, though the chicken was very much on the spongy side. My girl got the chicken curry which was blazingly hot and delicious, though the vegetables on the side were notable for culinary laziness rather than flavor. I was hoping for more considering the 3.5 Unilocal stars overall. Very much a mixed bag with some important let downs. Wouldn’t try it again or recommend the place.

Madeleine’s Thoughts Tasty appetizers and $ 1 Chang beers. Need I say more? P.S– (limited seating, fairly quick service, okay price for NYC, cool interior, great location, fun area, and for reals…$ 1 Chang beers — though you have to buy food for the $ 1 beer price to apply)

I’ve ordered from the thai place Lychee used to be(Why Curry) before and nothing seems all too different(except the décor maybe) but more or less the food was fine. I mean I’ve certainly had better Thai in various parts of New York(uptown, downtown, brooklyn) but the prices are reasonable and our noodle dish was very generous in portion size and the curry dish I’m not familiar enough with to review based on BUT… they definitely get props for $ 1 beers… I mean… that’s a good deal. It’s only the 1 type of beer but who cares? It’s $ 1! bueno :)

WOW so disappointed with this place. Went here with a party of around 18 or so for a friend’s birthday. She had called ahead to make reservations so they were definitely expecting us and I would think, would try their best to accommodate the large party in a pretty small restaurant. Started off with bringing over a cake for the birthday girl. Asked the manager to store it for me and he looked at me as if I asked him to fly to outer space and bring back Mars for me. Finally he said he would put it in the basement where it would be near a cooling fan. Next the food — everyone placed their order at the same time however the first dish starts rolling out… followed by a literal 30MINUTES waiting period before the last couple of dishes are served. At this point the chicken satay fried rice dish that was first to be served was cold and per my friend didn’t taste that great. I got the pad thai based on reviews but it wasn’t anything spectacular. Finally the icing on the cake came when I asked the manager to bring up the cake. He ignored my polite waving everytime he came by until I finally stood next to him while he was working the cashier for him to give me an exasperated«In a couple of minutes, I’m busy right now.» He finally brought the cake up 10 minutes later and promptly DUMPED it on the bar next to our table. He didn’t alert us that the cake was there, did not provide a knife nor forks nor plates. We legit had to wave him down several times for him to bring us utensils. I’m not sure WHY he took forever to serve us given we probably gave him 80% of his profits that evening. So thoroughly disappointed… and it took more moments of waving down to get our check too. Please save yourself the hassle of coming here… there are much better thai restaurants, and just restaurants in general, elsewhere in EV.

Why Curry closed and reopened as Lychee. Why? I don’t know. But, I no longer find them on SeamlessWeb. I stopped by one evening to get something to-go. It was the first time I spent any time in the actual restaurant. The décor is black, red, and trendy. The servers are also dressed in all black. They are really riding on this trendy wave and they should, because we all know how great a few coats of lacquer can spruce up an interior. I got chicken pad see ewe and vegetable dumplings to go — they taste the same as when they were Why Curry. I don’t eat Thai nearly as often as I used to, but this will continue to be my go-to place(and at least they didn’t get rid of the great lunch special!)

Wanted to give«Why Curry» a try, typically eat at Yaffa across the street when in the Village. Dined alone(weirdo!) though one wall of the restaurant is a continual bench seat; so I did have some company. Having no one to talk to and the usual dead iphone battery all I could do is focus on the food and my surroundings. First the surroundings– definitely a retrofit; take down a few pieces of bamboo and it transforms into a wine bar or whatever eating space tomorrow. It’s dark, a bunch of rope light is strewn across the bar giving it a cruise-ship feeling(I just noticed Unilocaler Lauren R’s review described a cruise-ship vibe from the music– what goes on here?). For some reason all my fellow diners were European tourists, Germans on one end and who knows on the other(could not determine the language over the cruise-ship music). The food was good. I ordered the grand sounding «Why Curry Chicken– featuring supreme chicken breast, vegetables, exotic curry sauce» I should have stuck with Pad Thai or another traditional dish. The chicken was«supreme», 4 cutlets stacked up like a little poultry log cabin drizzled in a spicy curry with vegetables on the side. Everything had good flavor but had a distinct«from a bag in the frozen aisle» appearance, down to the crinkle cut veggies. Nice waitstaff, clean(I think, it was rather dark), and fast service. I don’t know if I’ll visit Why Curry again, it’s not bad but in this part of the city it is surrounded by places that are much better.

.Weekday lunch. Why Curry? This place is totally hidden and tucked in East Village off of St. Marks. It’s super small, with a handful of tables only. In my opinon, probably better for«take out» food, than dining in. Portions run generally on the small side, but perfect for me. I had the peanut chicken and it was absolutely amazing. Tasty, white chunks of breast meat, the peanut sauce with crushed peanuts draped nicely. The vegetables definitely colored the dish and they were bright & fresh. Bonus points for offering brown rice for a buck more. On the other hand, the jungle curry left something to be desired … the curry was not flavorful and hearty enough. Watered down and a bit disappointing. Our server didn’t speak a lick of English, which was annoying. To reflect back on my rhetorical question… Why curry? yeah, I don’t know either. Their curry was piss poor, but their specialty dishes seem a bit better.

Went here for lunch the other day on recommendation of Elite Unilocalers. It was the first time I actually used Unilocal to find a good place to eat. I am afraid to say, I was a little disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, the food is good; but based on the recommendations, I was expecting the food to be great. This is no Pam Real Thai. Even Thailand Café is as good if not better. Nonetheless their Pad Thai was nicely done with the peanut sauce hitting more than one note. Not a place where I will be a regular though.
