We took a number of vintage light fixtures to Joseph Solo and he rewired them all in record time. In fact, we didn’t have time to walk home before he called to say that they were done and could be picked up. The experience here could not have been better. He is charming and professional — truly an «old world» gentleman and the prices are great. Sadly, I walked by his store yesterday and it was empty! Has he relocated? The loss of Joseph Solo as a neighborhood business would be a shame.

Amazing business people. They completed my boss’s chandelier repair in record time and for a great price at that. We will definitely be returning for future work!

I had a fantastic experience at Joseph’s. I brought in four old dining room chairs(my grandmother’s set, most likely made in the 50’s) and, after recommending that I choose new fabric for the chairs at the garment district’s «Mood,» Joseph told me he would call me in a couple days once he had repaired the chairs with the new fabric. He was true to his word, calling me on New Year’s day(about 36 hours after I had dropped off the chairs), having repaired them beautifully. He really saved this dining room set, and did so in record time. I couldn’t recommend his services more highly.

Wonderful experience! I needed a lamp light switch replaced. After calling another place that said it would take 4 – 5 days, I saw Joseph Solo ad here and remembered passing it in my neighborhood. After a friendly phone conversation verifying address, I dropped off my lamp —- and in 5 minutes left with my new lamp switch in my lamp! I was amazed. He was so laid back and friendly — and efficient. He even joked how other places take days to do this and over-charged. I felt like i was in Ohio in the 1940’s talking with my neighborhood repairman. Do not hesitate about this place — or the man who runs it(He also had some cool antiques and odds and ends. Highly, highly recommend !!

Quick and convenient. Charged $ 30 per lamp to fix switches, worth it.

Joseph Solo gets five stars for the quick lamp repair while I waited. The price for replacing a broken switch? Quite reasonable compared to more upscale places like Gracious Homes or electrician dens where you leave a lamp for weeks and then they hit you with a big bill. He was professional, pleasant and is happy to create a lamp from whatever keepsake you’d like. I saw the light!

Steriotypical bait & switch salesman does average work at typical UES inflated prices. It might make you feel better knowing your antique furniture is being worked on right in your hood, but thats not enough justification for the under handed sales tactics and high prices. On the recommendation of a satisfied friend I stopped in to arrange for a quote for reupholstering 2 living room chairs and 2 dining room chairs. Joe had several similar chairs in the shop so it was easy comparison. He gave a rough quote and said to bring pictures or arrange for him to come by. I took pics from every angle and went back to him. He gave me a similar quote which was a bit cheaper than others I got so I arranged for him to pick them up. After about a week he called me to come by the shop as they need some structural shoring up. WHen I get there the chairs are in the same place he stashed them when they were picked up, with no evidence of having been touched let alone worked on. He proceeds to show me a similar rickety chair and tells me mine have the same problem and they need to have the frames glued and tightened. Suddenly the quote is double. But if I dont want to do that work I can just take the chairs with me. Really? your holding my chairs hostage and threatening to kick them to the curb if I dont like the new quote!!! I tell him I’ll be back to him tomorrow and scramble to get additional quotes. Ultimately I let him do the work. It was done quickly and appeared fine. But appearances can be deceiving. After a week the seams on one seat started opening and another started to sort of ooze stuffing out of a small corner fold. He quickly took both back and fixed them for no additional charge as I’d expect. But a year later the corner stuffing issues is back on both DR chairs. Overall I’d say the experience was pretty annoying and the quality questionable. But 2 friends have reported good experiences so maybe I’m the exception.
