Great atmosphere and very attractive bartenders. I was happy with my drink and the view

After much anticipation, I must say that I am thoroughly disappointed with this place. The drinks are marketed under the Raines law room brand, but they’re merely created by someone who is an actual mixologist there. The folks at this place are not mixologists(at least the ones that I dealt with). The starting cheese plate was good, but you have to be a moron to mess that up. The bangers and mash left a bit to be desired. The burger that everyone seems to rave about was crap… So we’re the fries that went with it. The patty was cooked to a perfect medium rare but all I tasted was charcoal… A horrible burnt taste. The bun was lousy as were the fries that went with them.

Excellent warm atmosphere. Very friendly servers and general feeling of welcome. Come in and stay a while. The perfect hard day’s end reprieve. Exactly what you need when looking for a cozy night out. Few TVs but they will play whatever sport you need to watch. First and foremost a social place and it lives up to its name.

Great place to eat. Very cozy. When you walk in the bar of narrow. But go the back and there is a full area to eat and a cute patio. The food was great and felt very upscale for a reasonable price. The staff was kind and helpful. Great date night spot!

The food was 4-stars but the service was mighty slow and they ran out of crumpets in the middle of brunch. I was also disappointed at how limited their brunch menu was — everything was basically a fried meat option, there was nothing for vegetarians or someone who didn’t feel like eating into the point of a food coma. I went with the food coma route, and did really enjoy my burger, cooked absolutely perfectly medium rare. But to quibble, the bun was served cold and I ran out of ketchup right away and no one came by to check and see how we were so I ate most of my burger without it. If you know me, you know I love my condiments. Also, my friend’s eggy bread(French toast) while delicious, was a mini portion.

I came here based off some list of ten best fish and chips, and I will say it was good but no way worth 23 dollars, that’s more than London prices. The beer selection was just OK and again pretty steep for what they had.

Haven’t been to here since I moved from the area. Food here has always been on point. We were in the neighborhood and decided to stop by to have a drink and grab a bite to eat barside. The folks next to us got their food and finished before the bartender even spoke to us about the delay. We cut our losses and paid our bar tab and left. The place is not the same, there’s something up… I bet the place will be gone in a year or two.

full breakfast is rather decent~ portion is good, not ridiculously big. personally I would like a bit more grilled tomato and beans in tomato and less meat, but that’s just me lol~ super cute courtyard, i will definitely come back in summer and hopefully get to sit in there.

My boyfriend and I sought out this destination after reading a glowing review about their bacon cheeseburger. Firstly, the ambiance is lovely, accomplishing the ambiance of a well-designed British pub without feeling as though they were trying too hard, either by going too hipster or too divey. There were no offensive neon signs or kitsch, and the antiqued, dark-wooded design was very tastefully executed. We arrived in the midst of a snowstorm before dinner service had officially began, but our server was kind enough to accommodate us at the bar, and arranged for the kitchen to prepare our food nevertheless. My boyfriend was really pleased with the quality and flavor of his burger($ 19) remarking on the flavor of the beef in particular. I tasted the thrice-cooked fries which were delicious. Seriously, I would return for those fries and a British brew alone. Unfortunately, my kale salad($ 12) was a major disappointment. I don’t expect the world of a kale salad, but it was severely overpriced for the small portion I received. For $ 12, I expect to receive a medium-to-large salad, but it was TINY(think side salad) and lacked any of the ingredients or flavors that would warrant the price. When I informed the server that the salad didn’t include the figs listed on the online menu, he said that the website was out of date, but didn’t offer to adjust the price. In fact, the salad cost $ 1 more than the website stated. I would urge the restaurant to either reconsider the price or portion of the salad. I would also ask that they update their online menu, as it reflects outdated ingredients and pricing. All in all, it was a cozy, charming atmosphere with good service and delicious, albeit slightly overpriced food. I would definitely return, but I intend to exercise greater caution when ordering given some the prices.

Great brunch spot with English and UK fare! I ordered the Scottish salmon burger and my friend ordered the scotch egg burger, which I actually was jealous of when I took a bite. Our service was a little slow and we were sitting near some doors so we were FREEZING halfway through the meal, but can’t wait to hit this place in the warmer weather.

As someone who grew up in the UK I was excited to visit this restaurant which was listed in a list of «top british restauarants». Now the space is actually quite cute and I love their little outdoor area which is good if youre on a date with your significant other. Its quite quaint. The place looks kinda like pubs back home if imagined by an American tourist and honestly is kind of cheesy, its not a big deal I understand this is the US, but don’t come here thinking«wow this feels like England». The food is where my biggest issue is. The fish and chips was good no doubt but stupidly small given the incredible price, like its kind of dramatic and I think after tax and tip it will come out to 25 – 30 dollars which is kind of insane. It was nice that they had banoffee pie as I have trouble finding a place to introduce that dessert to my mates. The overall impression: cute looking place albeit a bit kitsch and cheesy, but wayyyyyyy too pricey for the quality and amount. If you want great fish and chips without silly prices check out Salt and Battery(down in meatpacking, yes I know very very far) If you bring your British mate here, stick to drinks and maybe the banoffee

BUYERBEWARE!!! This place practices in shady Credit Card stealing. I went here a while back and just realized today(my fault for catching it late) that they decided to nearly triple the amount of tip I left on my credit card. Now I don’t know who is responsible for this thievery, weather it be the bartender or the manager. But either way, this is unacceptable and outrageous. Now I have to deal with my bank to straighten this out and that’s a headache I can do without. With that said, the food and drinks were fine. But in no way is any place’s service good enough to overcharge my card.

We ate brunch here last Saturday. The bar area is narrow, but this just adds to the intimacy of the place. I had the full english breakfast which was very good, although the bacon could have been cooked for a little longer. My friend has a dish called Kedgeree which she really enjoyed. We will be back

Food is ho-hum. Service is appalling. Forgot about our drinks, twice. Was here for 1.5 hrs and server visited our table 3 times. They cleared our table and 30 minutes later we are still waiting for anyone to come by so we can get the check.

My brother has been taking about trying this place since I moved in down the street but sadly it took us 6 months to go. From the second we walked in the door I couldn’t believe how much I loved this place– the décor was phenomenally English without being kitschy. We had the Scotch Eggs, pickled pear with blue cheese toast and the lamb and rosemary pie. We loved every bite but were especially enamored by the toast. While we we eating we saw them serve the burger and fish and chips both of which looked so amazing that we are already talking about going back to order those items(and the pear toast of course)! My only criticism would be the lack of British beers and ciders. I loved my old specked hen but was seriously disappointed that the only ciders on the drink menu were American.

So this is what a gastropub looks like! I have never been to England so when my friend recommended to come here, I didn’t expect this place to be dimmed out to be this dark. I am not sure if we were suppose to make reservations, but luckily we were able to be seated and placed in our order. We both got the House Blend Burger medium rare. I got mine with Cheddar while he got Stilton Cheese which they described it as Blue Cheese. The meal comes with fries as well. Overall, the burger tasted great! It may look small at first, but once you finish it, you’ll feel stuffed. Love how you can taste the burger, lettuce, and onion all at once. Didn’t really tasted the cheese sadly. I also got the Brooklyn Stimulus Dark Lager I think they called it and I highly recommend it to beer enthusiasts. Just a fair warning, the items are on the pricy side, but that’s NYC for ya!

My friends and I chose this for lunch somewhat at random, but I’m glad we did as it ended up being a great meal. It’s a pretty cool space with several areas – the cozy and dark bar, a brighter room with windows and a skylight behind that, and yet more seating in another cozy room in the rear. We went for a late lunch(around 2 or so) so we had no trouble getting a table quickly. I chose the house burger with cheddar. It was a pretty large burger, and quite tall once topped with bacon, red onion, and pickles, which were all very fresh. The meat was juicy and full of flavor as well. It came with a side of fries which were honestly my favorite part. They are super thick cut fries with a ton of seasoning – I don’t know what they do to them, but they really pack in the flavor. They were served steaming hot(to the point where I couldn’t even pick them up for a few minutes) with ketchup, for a classic combination. I washed all of this down with a cold beer, which made for a really delicious lunch. Our server was really friendly as well, and everything came out pretty quickly. A bonus of eating at an odd time, I suppose! Overall a nice experience and somewhere I would certainly return to when in the area.

So my husband was super excited for authentic fish and chips and was super ticked when he opened the takeout boxes… for $ 20 you think you would have gotten something that didn’t resemble a fish filet from McDonald’s. Normally restaurant portions of fish fry are larger than 4″, especially at that price and the fact that no other sides cane with the meal. We have no problem paying good money when it makes sense but we feel like we got ripped off.

Great gastropub in Yorkville. It has been all positive experiences when coming here for dinner over the past several years. This pub/restaurant’s location is somewhat off the beaten path(between 1st Avenue and York Avenue), but it is well worth a visit whether you are local or planning a trip to the UES. It can get busy at night and on weekends so I would recommend making a reservation. The décor inside is very nice. The front features a well-kept bar with a casual atmosphere. Walk towards the back to find the dining room, which is down a short flight of stairs and features a large indoor seating area and limited outdoor seating. The lighting has been dim and provided a more intimate setting during my experiences. Service is friendly and attentive. The food from the dinner menu is great. I enjoy the mussels and French onion soup as appetizers; house blend burger, tea brined chicken, and bangers & mash as mains; and Yukon gold mash and cooked chips as sides. The lamb and rosemary pie is also good. I definitely recommend coming here for dinner. Looking forward to my next visit!

I made reservations here for Thanksgiving dinner based solely on Unilocal reviews, taking a chance on a new place. When we arrived on time for our reservation we were seated quickly and greeted by our wait person instantly. She was wonderful and made the entire experience wonderful. The three course menu offered on this holiday was delicious, I can’t say more than that. Well I can actually, the place was fantastic, a perfect place for a date or a small group. There is a separate bar up front that you will walk pass as you make your way to the dinner area. The plan is to come back and experience their regular menu some day. Reservations recommended!

Between this place and Caledonia, I think UES has the UK covered really well. JWF has a uniquely English feel to it, adorned with cricket bats, tube signs, and other English knick-knacks in a pub setting. The space is cozy and I really love the dining area in the back with its comfy booth-like areas. The beer menu does not disappoint with Fuller’s and Old Speckled Hen along with other European beers. I just wish there were more English selections and less of the American microbrew selections, just to help differentiate the place more from surrounding places. I’ll need to visit again to fully explore the menu, but the scotch eggs and chips were solid, fatty accompaniments to soak up my pint(s). In short, this place is the dog’s bollocks!

I’ll own up to it: I’m not a fan of British food and came to a British pub. The best of the brunch entrees are the traditional ones and, as you’d expect, very normal in design. For additional evidence, I came with some others who liked British food who didn’t particularly enjoy their meals either.

This place reminds me of the pubs back home in England! I was really happy to try it after finally being somewhat near the location a couple of weekends ago. I loved the English décor, the tube sign, red letterbox and English rugby shirt on the wall! I ordered the pie of the day and my husband ordered the scotch egg burger. We both really enjoyed the food, but I would have liked if mine had come with some vegetables(only came with fries & no option to order a side of veg on the menu). My husband would have preferred if his came with fries as opposed to potato chips. Other than that, we enjoyed our meal. We shared a dessert and ordered sticky toffee pudding, which again was delicious! I loved that you can even order scones too! The service was sufficient. Our server didn’t always understand our questions and couldn’t confirm why my menu displayed different prices to my husbands menu?! We sat out the back in the restaurant, where it is more of a dining room, which was really nice. It is a big space. There is also a bar at the front as well as a small outdoor dining area. I will definitely be taking all my English friends here to try some traditional English dishes.

Have to write an update to my review, because I’ve already been back for dinner-twice! The ambiance is just as nice for dinner– maybe even more so. Dimmed lights and candles. Service has been just as friendly, and the food is delicious! I’ve tried a special pie of the day and the cottage pie– both were flavorful and hit the spot! My friend has the fish and chips, and it was perfect; really light and flaky. I’ll keep coming back!

Came in with a friend on a weekday evening. Was a little thrown off by the gigantic bar right when you walk in. The dining area is in the back as is the hostess, so make sure to find them back there. The restaurant is very nicely decorated with a lot of charm. There are plenty of different pockets and outdoor seating. We never felt like we were in a loud place and crowded. We shared a few items: deviled eggs, scotch egg, fish and chips and lamb pie. I found it to be reasonable but not over the top amazing. The Lamb pie was delicious and seasoned very well but there were large chunks of fat on some of the lamb which threw me off. The fish and chips portion was tiny– since there was so much breading it was basically an itsy piece of fish. Not worth the price. I also found it overly oily. Deviled eggs were just okay and my friend enjoyed the scotch egg. Service was on point and not pushy, even though we spent a good 2.5 hours there. I liked the opportunity to try something new in a neighborhood I do not frequent but feel the portions were small for the price.

I would give the restaurant a 4.5÷5 but I rounded up. First off, you would never expect this place to be here. It’s hidden by being located in between avenues and also the restaurant hostess is in the back at the end of the bar. So I can imagine it’s somewhat of a hidden gem. Next, the service was good. When you expected the waiter to be at your table to pick up dishes or bring water, he was there. Now for the food. I ordered a scotch egg and marrow for an appetizer. Scotch egg gets a B and marrow gets a D. Then for dinner I ordered fish and chips and the chicken balti pie. Fish and chips get an A– and the pie gets an A++. Def would go back again.

I feel bad rating this place for mediocre stars… maybe I’m just not a fan of british food? I’m not sure… Anyway, a group of 7 of us were looking for brunch plans on labor day, and this was one of the few in the area that took reservations. Unfortunately Labor day is on a Monday, so they weren’t serving brunch(our fault!), but the lunch menu was a little expensive for what we were expecting. I wanted to order the salmon pie, but apparently they only had 2 in stock(we got there as soon as it opened), so I let my friend order it instead and I tried the classic fish and chips. The food varied across the table. My fish’s batter was cooked well and not greasy, but the fish itself was pretty unflavorful even after adding sauce. My friend’s lattice fries were well cooked but I would’ve preferred them crispier. Apparently the salmon burger and salmon pies were pretty good though! — although the two salmon pies at the table varied in their gravy levels. Overall, a pretty expensive lunch for a dish I didn’t really want to finish. but the environment was pretty authentically British, at least!

This place was pretty good. I came here for Saturday brunch. It’s nice that they take reservations, but you honestly don’t need one because it was pretty empty. It’s a fairly large restaurant and we sat in the back, where there’s a skylight. Otherwise, it would have been really dark. There is a nice outdoor area that looked nice, but THAT was full. The coffee was quite good and came with refills, although you really had to ask for it. My friend and I shared the lemon curd/butter crumpets. It was good, but not my favorite. For 2 small pieces, it was $ 7. We also ordered the corned beef hash, which had two sunny-side eggs on top. Looked decent, although I didn’t try it. I believe my friend liked, but didn’t love it. I got the pie of the day. Today, it was salmon and mashed potatoes. It was quite good! I wish they had told me that there was mashed potatoes inside, because I would have gotten fries on the side instead of more mashed potatoes. I think this place is pretty authentic because they had a lot of the more interesting items on the menu that I saw when I was visiting the UK a few years back. I guess the prices are pretty steep for brunch, but it’s NY!

Impressed! My boyfriend suggested this restaurant for dinner, citing it as one of his favorite places. Service was friendly and, for the most part, attentive. Our server was extremely knowledgeable with the menu and able to effortlessly answer our questions(we were in Sunday 8⁄23 around 8PM; she has glasses and was wearing a tee with an At-at on it). Our food was brought to the table promptly. My boyfriend got the burger, which was huge and piled high with toppings. The fries taste fresh and are thick, with the potato skin on them. Until I dug into my bangers & mashed potatoes, I was jealous of my boyfriend’s burger. The bangers are set on top of the mashed potatoes, and the entire dish is drizzled in onion gravy. I devoured the entire meal, which was abundant in portion! Perfection. In addition to the delicious food, they had a variety of beers and wines to suit almost any taste. The interior is romantic and dimly lit. We were placed in a cozy corner with cushioned seating. The décor is unique and tasteful! This wont be the cheapest meal you’ve ever had, but it’s definitely worth it. You get the value you would expect for what you’re paying on a night out in Manhattan!

We were visiting NYC, walking through Central Park and decided we wanted fish ‘n chips. After using our trusty Unilocal app(can’t live without it while traveling) we decided to make the trek to Jones Wood Foundry. Now, every time we visit NYC, Jones Wood Foundry is a MUST! First of all, the place itself is super cool and they have a beautiful little courtyard that is wonderful for outdoor dining on a pretty day. Second, best fish ‘n chips I’ve ever had. Third, brunch is fantastic… clotted cream, scotch eggs, lemon curd with crumpets. Be prepared to pay more than you would normally expect for fish ‘n chips but it’s worth it! And it’s New York so you pay more for everything anyway.

The food portions look small but it is FILLING. Went for brunch and had the turkey potpie. Boyfriend had the fish and chips. A bit pricey, but neither of us needed to eat for the rest of the say! I wish the place a bit bigger, I was squished in between a large guy and my boyfriend and elbowed both of them continually throughout my meal.
