I Love coming here to get an experience of the artists of our time. If your into contemporary and or lowbrow movement this is the place to be. Audrey Kawasaki, Tara McPherson and Adam wallacavage are a short list of the many talented artists that have been exhibited in this fine gallery. I highly recommend visiting this gallery and taking a nice walk on the highline as you make your way here. The best times to come are the last day of the exhibit or the first when there’s the open reception to meet the artist in person. Get on that mailing list or email chain to get your exhibit updates now.

Cutting edge pop art like you would find in Juxatapoz or High Fructose magazine. Instead of seeing the art on a printed page or on Tumblr, you can see it in person, and perhaps buy a piece. The gallery is clean and perfectly lit, providing the perfect environment to view the art. There are two locations — one is on the 9th floor of a building and one is at the street level. The staff at each location are helpful. Like Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park, NJ, if you’re familiar.

This gallery does not disappoint. Came here recently to see the exhibit by Artists Anonymous. My boyfriend and I spent a lot of time taking pictures and the staff came over and asked if we were art students. After realizing we weren’t, they were more than happy to show us apps on our phones that inverted colors and made the images look dope. Worth checking out if you’re in the Chelsea area.

This art gallery has been a favorite of mine for years! I have seen such impressive shows from Miss Van and the more recent Tara McPherson and Adam Wallacavage! Tara McPherson is a local favorite and it’s no surprise why. The owner of the Cotton Candy Machine is also an über talented artist. You might recognize her work from some amazing band poster art. Recently her poster art was featured in the Paris Metro. For this recent art show, «Wandering Luminations» Tara churned out some lovely ladies with blue hair and pink hair. The ladies are accompanied by fairytale like creatures like a rose python and feisty wolf. She creates a gorgeous world to escape to via the galley. If you don’t know Adam Wallacavage he is also a must see. Adam is another east coast fave(Philly). He creates the most amazing chandeliers. I can normally recognize his work with the tentacle details. The chandeliers for the recent exhibit, «Magic Mountain» took the cake for his best work. There were serpent chandeliers, a 4 eyed cat sculpture, tentacle candle holders and I just loved the pink mirror adorned with pink rabbits and kittens. Don’t forget to see this art mecca when you are in NY.

Jonathan LeVine has a great collection of shows from interesting, contemporary artists, with a strong focus on the street art scene. They often have double or triple solo show openings, which is a great way to learn about new artists and get in a bunch of extra art-ing for your proverbial buck. The one thing that bugs me is the secret booze room. For some reason I find it so distracting. If you’re in the art illuminati you can get the secret password and go have some wine with Jonathan in the side room! Can we all just get over ourselves for a minute? I can totally respect not serving booze at openings(they often have some kind of fancy water at Levine, which is nice!), but maybe we could just leave it at that. I’m not sure if the Levine pop-up around the corner will happen again, but the shows there were even more spectacular for the sheer size of the place. They also often did great giveaways for the first 100 or so people to show up, and the lines were intense. The regular LeVine gallery gets pretty packed too(like I said, they show some great artists), so be prepared for close quarters or arriving early — and bring your own cheap wine if you wanna feel speshul.

If Geddes was going to keep a freaking quarter of the run for his buddies, it would be nice and helpful to disclose the actual amount of prints for sale to people in line. A big thank you Jonathan Levine Gallery for jerking people’s hope to those who made it to the 100 and below mark line and had to wait 5 hours for nothing.

Midnight Reverie is a new series of works by highly celebrated Los Angeles-based artist Audrey Kawasaki. Kawasaki always likes to portray subtle yet intriguing feminine characters in her paintings. But for the first time in this exhibit at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, she featured flat, graphic shapes, painted in layers of solid black acrylic within her surreal female subject matters. I’ve always wondered where Audrey gets her imagination from for each of her paintings, each one is always different. The exhibit ends this Saturday October 6th.

Might I say one of the top galleries in NYC? At least the most important when considering contemporary artists. Take a trip.

This is my favorite gallery in the city. The Levine Gallery is very consistent in the work they display. They work with mostly young contemporary illustrators and painters whose work is often very unique, vivid, and extremely creative. One of my favorite shows here was from James Jean(look him up). It’s one of the only galleries I’ve been to that I don’t have to check their current exhibition schedule to know that when I stop by there will be something beautiful to look at. The people here are always very nice and like all other galleries, is completely free. I see no reason to give the LeVine Gallery anything less than 5 stars.

All galleries spaces are the same to me… it’s what they are showing that really matters the most. This gallery in particular though was on the 9th floor of the building so people were very reluctant with taking the stairs, I understand that… but then the line for the slow elevator was something to take into consideration. There were a few great pieces a few good ones and some that were questionable… but that was expected. The opening was a little bit crowded for my taste. I would come on a less populated evening to get a better look at the artists’ work.

I went here for the first time in March. I really liked the layout and the size. The exhibit I saw was fantastic: graffiti artists from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Very cool.

JLGallery deserves more than 5 stars. Most of the work is highly illustrative and though categorized as low brow/pop surrealism art(which claims its roots in the west), it is also commonly known under the graffiti movement prevalent in the art world now. most of the work is emotional, powerful and controversial. in that sense it is also celebrated. these artists push the limits of art in a truly new form of art where no specific style exists in this movement save for the raw, surreal color pallet and the variety of artists that undress their world through their canvas, or at the JLGallery, the walls. i’m biased because i feel emotionally connected to the work(yeah yeah i know) but seriously, even if u hate this kind of work, going into JLgallery, i think you’ll walk out appreciating the passion and character of low brow/pop surrealism art. The Jonathan LeVine Gallery exhibits a genre of work influenced by illustration, comic books, graffiti art and pop imagery. Featuring work by a variety of celebrated, controversial, and unknown pop surrealist and underground artists, the gallery, formerly operating as Tin Man Alley Gallery in Philadelphia and New Hope, PA, moved to Chelsea in January 2005.
