There are some definite hits and misses at John’s Pizza. It’s décor screams old school 1990s pizza parlor. It’s nothing fancy but it is typical New York. I kind of expect the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to be stopping by. Their plain pizza slices are nothing exciting but they are pretty big. Personally, I need a topping. With extra cheese, the pizza slice is transformed. It’s piping hot. The cheese is gooey. The sauce is still problematic. It definitely needs a kick to it. It’s bland. Now, when I’m greedy, and it’s payday, I add two toppings. With extra cheese and pepperoni, now we’re talking! The slice is gooey and salty and has a nice snap to the crunch. But the best, BEST, pairing is extra cheese and chopped meat aka ground beef. Since the beef has its own grease and the pizza slice has its own grease, they mix together and create a fantastic salty blend that may not help their bland sauce but tastes all so delicious! Of the non pizza variety, I recommend the sausage hero with everything but the sauce, their mac and cheese, creamed spinach and their Baked Ziti with ground beef and extra cheese and Lasagna. The owner, John, is very nice as are the chefs.

Finally got my fill of NY pizza today. Just ordered a slice of cheese pizza. It was your typical NY style: massive, basic and pretty yummy. The crust was mediocre and could use some work, but it definitely had the right amount of crisp. I’ll probably go back and have another slice before I head back to LA.
