I stumbled across James Cummins bookseller walking down Madison Avenue. Once you take the elevator to the 7th floor you are immediately welcomed by a room full of books and fine art. The staff is extremely helpful and will help you find a book in your price range. They specialize in Americana and Sports and Games, but still have a fantastic selection in all other genres. My favorite find is Stephen King’s uncommon screenplay of Carrie, certainly a special item for a King fan like myself! Looking forward to returning again soon. I highly recommend!

Very strong selection of rare books across the subject spectrum(not just literature, but americana, exploration, science, etc.) Also well-organized; while they have a substantial portion of their stock in the warehouse(and are happy to search or retrieve it for you), browsing can still pay off. Prices are on the high side, but not as expensive as Bauman. And that is why you have to take an elevator to their showroom instead of waltzing in.

I first found out about the James Cummins Bookseller shop on a Rare Book class I took on NYU. This place is one of those last surviving old-world flare bookshops; hushed away on a 7th floor on a quiet stretch of Madison Ave, this place has all the characteristics of an elegant purveyor for a select and demanding clientele. Specializing in Americana, you can also find many a editio princeps of our constant gardeners(Hemmingway, F. S Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Steinbeck etc), granted, that is, if we could afford them. Miscellaneous findings of an affordable nature are also in order; they have over 40.000 titles in stock on their warehouses. If you are looking for specific out of printers, chances are James Cummins will get them for you. Do inspect the little glass cabinet displays they have in the small store; beautiful gems from a time where bookbinding was a craft of masters; calf skinned, gilded morocco, spinal ornaments and many other precious details will be found in the books at this location. This place is for book lovers, and dont shy away from this place only because you dont have 10 grand to spend in a first edition; hell, I cringe if I have to pay more than 30 bucks for a single book, BUT, a simple love and knowledge of books(and a willingness to buy within possibility) will win you the respect and appreciation of the staff(James Cummins himself looks like this old, passive cowboy with his long, gray mustache and a state of frowned stare, like an old Sheriff) Five stars for elegance that New York must never lose
