Hello, my name is the Hudson River and I am made of water. Blub. There are bridges that go over me — hello, cars stuck in infinite traffic. There are tunnels that go under me — hello, cars stuck in infinite traffic. There are boats that go across me — hello, commuters and tourists. There are boats that do up/down me — hello cruise ships, police boats, tugboats, container ships, sailboats, speedboats, yachts… etc. There are boats on the bottom of me — sorry boats. Sometimes I am warm — but I don’t recommend swimming in this part of me. Sometimes I am frozen — but don’t try and walk on me. Sometimes I smell funny. Sometimes I smell like ocean. A lot of the time random things are floating in me. All of the time I am a necessary part of the NY/NJ area and on the whole, I am way better than the East River because I lead to the land of New Jersey, home of a lot of super awesome people. Plus, i’m pretty awesome to look at. My side of the NYC skyline is virtually unobstructed from Lower Manhattan all the way up to the GW. Good news for costal NJ residents(except when I flood in you). Blub, blub.

The Hudson River is gross down stream. After years of pollution and people dumping toxins into the river it has become a radioactive cesspool. There are hundreds of no-fishing signs. Where you are allowed to fish, there are warnings not to eat your catch. Yet, I still see fisherman out on the weekends and they take the fish home. Odd. But the view of the Hudson from New Jersey is amazing. I love to take in the views of midtown from Weehawken. Alexander Hamilton Park is amazing. The people across the street are truly lucky to own those homes and I have to say, I am jealous — much like the owners of the painted ladies in San Fran. If you head upstream, the Hudson Valley is beautiful. The water is cleaner and it is great to go kayaking or rafting. The view from Liberty State Park in JC is also great. I have been sneaking into the park every morning to watch the sunrise over lower Manhattan every morning for the past few weeks. When the sun reflects on the water, it gives me purpose and direction and I am going to miss it dearly. I was very lucky to spend the past ten years here and I am sad to say I took it for granted. I have always been drawn to water, and I am sad to leave. Good bye old friend. I hope to meet again some day.
