Hides In Shape

This is a long overdue review to compliment Hides in Shape for a) their excellent customer service when I purchased my suitcase; from patiently hearing out my requirements to explaining the pros and cons of the relevant options in store and b) providing top-​notch aftercare (for free) when my suitcase had been thoroughly abused by 3 years of commercial airline travel and required a change of handle and fastening buckles. It’s a refreshing change to come across a business that actually cares about their customers after they’ve made the purchase in a capitalist society where everything comes at a price. They may not be the friendliest people on earth, but it’s NYC — if they’re not surly, you’re probably overpaying!

The guys at Hides In Shape have decades of experience in luggage sales, and will take time to discuss in depth the pros and cons of different brands and models. They are very knowledgeable and current on the marketplace for carry-​on luggage. I’ve purchased five pieces of Rimowa Topas aluminium luggage over the last year and the follow up service is exemplary. They are an authorized Rimowa service center so there are few issues in fixing structural damage at no charge. Other sales outlets may not have this level of customer service. A tip for the Topas fans — the new size option for carry-​on is a major advancement (920.53.00.4). Put Hides In Shape on the list of New York established businesses that stand by their products.

I brought too much stuff with me on my trips to NYC and Amsterdam… Story of my life! My Tumi was starting to fall apart (AGAIN) and I’d finally had enough! I decided to go shopping for something lighter in weight and more durable. I looked on Unilocal for a place that was close to my hotel & I discovered Hides In Shape & stopped in. I am so thankful I did! I just bought some really nice Rimowa luggage from Harry who was super helpful. Great selection at this store! They even monogrammed my luggage tags for me. Stop by and make sure you ask for Harry and tell him that you read this review. He’ll treat you right.

They don’t have in stock what they say that have on line. They aren’t especially knowledgeable and were making up info about luggage that wasn’t true. They just tried to sell me anything they could. I walked out. Not impressed at all.

This is a pretty damn good luggage store. Centrally-​located, and easy to get to. Basement showroom full of Rimowa, and I do mean full. Most I’ve ever seen in one store. Very knowledgeable about the product lines they carry. Their Rimowa prices aren’t completely out of whack, in a few instances are downright competitive, and they seem willing to dicker. If you ask, and in fact they may ask you first, they’ll deliver your new suitcase to your hotel or rental apartment (if it has a doorman) free of charge, to save you the trouble of dragging it around Manhattan yourself. That little bit of creative thinking on their part, in reply to my «What time do you close? Maybe I’ll come back later,» closed the deal on a suitcase the first time I ever went in there.
Unusually aggressive sales staff and management is the only reason this place doesn’t get the full five from me. If you walk in to browse or compare prices, expect hovering and the hard sell. If you walk in to buy, though, they’ll work with you.

I have been on the look-​out for a new bag to carry my laptop and other work essentials that doesn’t look like a work bag for quite some time. You know what I mean, who wants to carry around a HUGE black computer bag that seems to get heavier with every block you walk. I darted into this shop on Madison on a whim and was very pleased. I explained what I was looking for to the friendly lady that greeted me and I was ushered to the section known as «purses that carry your computer but don’t look like they do». They had a great selection not only in style but color and size. I didn’t get the bag the first time I went as I had to think about it since it was not the cheapest bag in the store. But when I went back this weekend it was half off! I grabbed the bag so quickly the sales clerk checked to make sure his fingers were still attached to his hand!
I highly recommend this place to women who would like to look a little more fashionable when they are going to and from work. (Men, they have briefcases but I didn’t linger over those.)
