HIAS — the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society — is the first refugee resettlement agency in the US… established over 125 years ago by Jewish refugees who came to the US from Eastern Europe, HIAS has helped resettle jewish and non jewish refugees around the world. If you live in New York, you probably have some connection to someone who was helped by HIAS at some point in their lineage. HIAS Young Leaders is a diverse group of young, intelligent, fun professionals who are committed to helping immigrant populations, lobbying for just immigration policies, and planning rad parties(which coincidently raise money to support refugees and immigrants). I have been involved with the organization since I moved to New York, and I think its the first time I’ve ever thoroughly enjoyed volunteer work… I attribute it to the combination of amazing people involved(volunteers and staff) and importance of the cause.
