I am now the informed user of the oscillating multitool, power screwdriver and wet-​tile saw. I know how to mix mortar and install floor tiles and hang sheetrock. Basically, I’m ready for my own HGTV show.
And I did it without severing a body part! The on-​site volunteer coordinators/​supervisors are super-​helpful and laid-​back. In fact, their goal is to help you to not sever a body part.
I volunteered in Coney Island, where houses were submerged with water after Superstorm Sandy. The need for volunteers is still great.
Once you sign up online for a day and repair site — don’t sign up for a «family partner» slot, as those are for families in Habitat’s home ownership program — someone will email you with clear instructions and your confirmation.
Please do show up because they have a lot of no-​shows who cause volunteer days to be marked as full when they really aren’t.
