This may be the best lamb I have had so far in the FIDI area. It’s freezing outside btw, and yet there were about 5 people in front of me. People are true fans of this place! I got lamb over salad, with white and hot sauce! They give you plenty of sauce, I did not need to ask for more. I could have had more red sauce, but I do love my spices… the amount they give is good for a medium spice level. What I love on top of the meats and sauces, are the added vegetables they add to your bowl. I had broccoli, caramelized onions, and even beets! This place beats all the other places and the sauces are even flavorful. I expected my bowl to be $ 7… but wow $ 6 gets you enough for a huge lunch or lunch and dinner… or maybe a mid day snack which I will probably be doing: D

Overall 3.5 stars I tried the Gyro over rice with white sauce and hot sauce. The salad that came with it was crisp and bright. The gyro meat was good but the rice was very gummy.

Good street food. Gyro had a nice(and unexpected) assortment of vegetables tucked into the pita. It was a nice first-time ordering experience for my teenaged son on his field trip to NYC, followed by a pleasant dining experience in the adjacent park. We didn’t get sick later, so it passes the most important street food test.

Asked for a chicken plate, the picture showed chicken and vegetables so I thought«great a quick healthier option» My chicken was over rice. White sauce? I said ok. She then began to completely cover my food in white sauce– I didn’t even have time to stop her. I tried to take some of it off and ended up losing half my food Bc it was just swimming in white sauce. Serious disappointment. I won’t ever go here again. Gross.

They are one of the better Halal trucks/carts in the Downtown Manhattan area. The food is always fresh and tasty and they give you the largest portion for $ 5 – 6 that I have had anywhere else.

I ordered the mixed plate(gyro and chicken) for $ 7 and got a massive plate of food. I liked that the meat was tender and not dry. This could easily have been 1.5 lunches, but this fatty finished everything in one sitting. Going to finish this review before food coma kicksssssss… kfnakflakjaaoelfil

The flavors at Gyro House are a bit different from your typical plate of street meat. They throw in a number of grilled vegetables that make it feel kind of/sort of/not really healthier. It works and it’s a nice change up. This is where I go when I’m starving as the portions are huge. They’re also very heavy handed with the sauce so be prepared to stop them unless you like your food drowning in white sauce(but who doesn’t?).

the best street meat in manhattan. the lamb over salad is the best ive ever had. they toss in some other vegetables, not just iceberg lettuce and a tomato. some cucumbers and brocolli and these delicious carmelized onions. top it with some white sauce and some amazing hot sauce. theres always a line but its worth it. really nice people

Gyro plate for six bucks is a real bargain. Meat is tasty and not too greasy and the plate has rice and a ton of veggies. Hot sauce is really good and they don’t skimp on it. I don’t eat white sauce so no comments on that. Always has a line but it moves.

Another Financial District food truck review, I really like the food here. It’s not nearly as greasy as some of the other choices on the plaza, and every bit as tasty. When I’m stuck for a better idea and I’m just looking for cheap and filling, these guys do the trick. Although, like I mentioned about Biryani House, I try to keep it very limited. One carton of this stuff more than blows out your calorie budget for the day.

It is just so darned hot that I am officially announcing Cart Food Week… the first cart I get to when I leave my office is going to be my lunch. Today’s winner is Gyro House, a truck tucked onto the tiny Cedar Street just off the food cart strip. I went with the gyro sandwich, natch, and was treated to a delicious lunch: deeply flavored meat, juicy veggies and a nice topping of creamy sauce. It was excellent. The only negative, and this is a common issue among FiDi carts, is that the meat is minced. That probably helps get everything uniformly hot, and is probably an advantage for the high-volume business of cart food, but it isn’t the gyro I grew up with… so while I will return to Gyro House, I will have to continue my quest for the Holy Gyro Grail.

If you are a halal lover, you HAVE to try this place. I eat here at least once a week and I was addicted after the first time I had it. I’ve tried some of the other halal carts in the area and they are no match for the GYROHOUSE!!! For $ 6 you can get a chicken or gyro over rice or a combo for $ 1 more. What makes this place stand out from every other truck or cart is the freshness and variety of the vegetables. Not only do the vegetables include lettuce and tomatoes, but also zucchini, chickpeas, peppers, eggplant, carrots and I’m probably missing something else. In short, this place is fresh and awesome!

GYROHOUSEADDICTIONISREAL I was introduced to this place by a friend, you know, something harmless. I’d done lamb on rice several times, years ago, usually at a party, back when I was living near Dearborn, Michigan, where the good middle-eastern food lives, and I wasn’t prepared for this. The flavors are so raw, so powerful, it has knocked me off my feet. You know that headrush from wasabi? Yeah, that’s the one. But this is so much more. The hot sauce is so damn hot it’s a whole new level. The rice has to be soaked in broth, the way it’s yellowed and delicious. The veggies are always fresh, sorted in some manner of trade rotation that only provides what is newest and in season at some secret market where they must buy it before slicing and dicing and making it part of the recipe. Know this. That in the 7 – 10 days that this truck was out of its usual location, due to an inspection which they must have passed with flying colors, I had no less than three close friends get with me quietly to ask if I was holding out, had I figured out where they were, since I wasn’t shaking and crying with the tremors of GYROHOUSE withdrawal. The truth is, I was. I was terrified inside that this joy, this delight, this taste amazement, might be gone from my life for good, leaving behind only happy memories, the pangs of what had once been. Luckily, the forces of good prevailed, and now they are back, the truck parked in its usual spot at the corner of Cedar and Broadway, a short line of traders and techies who could clearly pony up for Capital Grille every noon if they wanted, but instead stand in line in the cold and rainy wind just to blow six bucks for a full serving of heaven.

Love this truck! Best halal I have had any where in the city! I always get the lamb over rice and have also grabbed their gyro on occasion. If a friend or family member comes to visit or hell if a stranger asks for a recommendation, this is the place I refer them to. The only complaint I have about this place is that they aren’t around during the weekend!!!

I love this place so much. The food is great. portions are huge. lamb over rice or salad. but WHEREARETHEY? I have eaten here twice a week for the past 5 years and am now in a panic because they’ve been missing for the past week and a half. WHEREAREYOUGYROHOUSE??? I miss you desperately and am lost amongst a sea of mediocre halal carts :(Please come back or let us know where you are now parked.

Not sure why people refer to these carts as halal. I mean they are halal but that merely means the muslim equivalent as saying kosher. Anyways, like a lot of these other carts that get a cult following, I think this is 90% rep and 10% substance. Very average fare which can be had elsewhere. Not worth the extra $$$.

Absolutely my go to cart in the FiDi! It’s easily noticeable as it’s the only real truck/vehicle in the Zuccotti Park area and on the front of the truck it states Gyro House. It’s also situated away from the rest of its competitors on the SE corner of Cedar St and Broadway. As for the food, it is not only delicious, but extremely filling! The chicken and lamb tastes so much fresher than the other carts and they give you your money’s worth inside the box. Many carts just add lettuce and tomatoes, but gyro house adds onions, chopped peppers and zucchini in there as well! You’re not going to find too many carts that add all of those ingredients. My coworkers were going to a few different carts over the last few years and I took them here once. They also agreed that the flavors in the chicken/lamb over rice here are amazing and the serving size is more than they could ask for! For $ 6(which is typically the going price these days for street meat chicken/lamb over rice), it is totally worth the price if you get it from here!

OMG this cart has the best street meat chicken gyros I’ve ever had. The chicken has great flavor and they add on nice mixed vegetables. Plus the guys are pretty cool with a sense of humor.

Before I begin my review, I want to remind you that this place sits in FiDi, where the streets are gritty and food options are skimpy. Halal is actually more expensive than the famed stand at 53rd&6th and yet with far less quality. That said, I’ve only tried the falafel sandwich from this truck twice and both times were top-notch cart experiences relative to FiDi standards. Despite the length of time in between, I relished both lunch experiences. The first time, Gyro House was the Frito-Lay truck without the fancy online ordering option. My order of falafel sandwich landed me a fried chickpea boat. Think mother-of-Chipotle-burritos size. The pita could not be rolled because the contents were bursting over the top. Two hours and one very distended stomach later, I was basking in my post-pigout glow. Two days ago, the fond memory of this face stuffing came back to me so I went back to discover the name change and the addition of kofta and fish to the menu. Instead of quantity, this time I got quality. I had to wait a while for my order because they put the falafel into the fryer after I ordered it. Hooray for anti-stale-greased falafel practices! Also, this is one of the few halal carts that go the extra mile to include other veggies — zucchini, eggplant, carrot — besides the usual iceberg lettuce and traces of tomato. Is it the best one around the periphery of Zuccotti Park? I wish I could tell you but I haven’t tried every cart to know. I will say that I would rather pay the same $ 5.50 here and get the extras when I’m too lazy to walk to my first FiDi halal love, Adel’s Halal by Front St. So, um, every time.

I don’t know if this truck replaced the ‘Halal ‘Frito Lay’ Truck’ or this is the Frito Lay Truck. Signs point to that it is the Frito Lay truck because you can still see one of the logos above the passenger side door. The truck looks exactly the same, however the staff is different and the meat seems to be cooked slightly different, unless if it’s because I haven’t been here for a while. Gyro House makes a notably delicious chicken over rice for $ 5. I also asked to try the lamb which the chef gladly threw a couple slices on top. The chicken was tender and flavorful, good and exactly what one would come to expect. I received a couple slices of lamb from the outside of doner kebab, which resulted in a very crispy side with moist ground lamb underneath. It was not as salty as the prior vendor, making for a much better lamb. The yellow rice was heavily seasoned, though not to the point where you would gag, making for a yummy rice mixed with sauteed diced onions. The salad was typical with the shredded lettuce and sliced tomatoes, but the addition of very bitter cubes of zucchini kind of threw me off and made me gag once or twice. I never knew zuchinni could be that bitter! As for the sauces, white sauce was standard, but thumbs up for their hot sauce which actually had some decent heat. Enough to really hit me in the back of the throat. Generous portions, decent lines signifying a strong following, and a hot sauce that actually packs some heat. I think Gyro House is definitely a step up from its counterpart, the Frito Lay truck. My coworker ordered the Falafel Platter for $ 5 which actually seemed quite interesting with French Fries and an assortment of colorful vegetables(peppers, pickles, etc.). I may have to come back and check that dish out.
