baklawa is the best I have tried so far. However the staff doesnt really speak english and it makes it hard to communicate sometimes. I dont like the fact that a complaint is never well received and instead of refunding you your money they will just go into back and forth. food good but customer service =0

Expensive and they over price. If you go there then check your receipt well if they put the right one and you’d better remember the price of food what you order… They charge some stuff that are not on the menu and that’s more expensive… I have a photo of the receipts I’ll uploade it here

Average taste, poor service. The bakery is ok not bad but service is too slow and unprofessional… Real Turkish baklava is much much better than this.

Worst service in Manhattan. Food is ok but the bad service cannot be overseen. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. Came here a few weeks ago and got an doner wrap with falafel instead of meat, which was quite nice. Went back in today to grab the same thing, and was greeted by an aggressive waitress who tried to convince me that I had hallucinated the whole experience and there was no way I had this meal at this restaurant. She then went onto say this meal was a completely different meal to the doner kebab. Then, in a nice finish, she said they just couldn’t alter the menu for every customer. This was all shouted at me at the front of the restaurant. For starters: it’s not a completely different meal, it’s one minor change. And I am not paying at a restaurant to be spoken to and told that I am obviously having a memory lapse because this is ‘not possible’. What happened to the customer is king? Go elsewhere. Unless you want extremely slow service and you love your meal with a side of nasty attitude. I will go elsewhere and pay extra for the same food to NOT be spoken to like that.

I am very disappointed! My husband and i going to the city once a month, and this is one of the place that i asked to stop at and there was a waitress(she is Turkish) was very rude and messed up my order ! When i got home i have realized that she did not only messed up my order! All my orders are hackneyed! she also over charged me! She didn’t seem like want to be there or work there. She is a very very bad employee to work there! I would never go there again! I will warn all my friends about this place! That happened today(MAY18th Wednesday) there were two waitress I’m talking about the girl with the ponytail. The other girl was nice but she had no idea what she was doing at this place. This place is falling a part. I feel so bad about the money that she over charged me! I work so hard and it wasn’t right what she did!

Not impressed. Menemem was ok but I’ve had better. The service is slow. Is expensive for what they offer. You can definitely find better turkish restaurants with half of the prices that they have at gulluoglu. They charge you for the tea(generally free at turkish places) and it was a bit too strong. In general the food is ok but not real turkish taste.

My friend from Turkey brought me here to showcase Turkish cuisine. We sampled various baklava, gozleme, and coffee served in a really cool metal mug(she even did some fortune telling)! It was a very pleasant café to share unique desserts and appetizers! I’ll definitely return to try the yok yok breakfast platter and kebabs.

I’m obsessed with Gulluoglu, and not just because it’s the only restaurant in Manhattan where I’ve been able to find bal kaymak — that rich clotted cream and honey that makes Turkish breakfast so perfect. The service is impeccable — Mumozza is always on point.

Last time I had this slow service, the restaurant business wasn’t invented yet. Super slow; I came for lunch and I ended up having dinner. I came here to taste some Turkish food but everything was as American as it can get. I mean«bad» American. One of the Turkish desert I had was expired I guess. Nor crisp neither fresh. Wasn’t this place famous for its deserts? Did I mention slow?

I’ve been coming here for the past few years and have seen it improve greatly in that time. They recently renovated the restaurant, replacing the crappy tables and chairs with newer, more comfortable furniture. They’ve also added some new light fixtures, which give the place a warm atmosphere. I’m obsessed with the pastirma here, which is home-made by a teyze(auntie) in New Jersey. It’s dope. When you order the Yok Yok breakfast platter, you get a ton of food, including eggs, cheese, meats, tomatoes, cucumbers, sour cherry jam, honey, Nutella, tahini and pekmez(og Turkish style), and of course simits. It’s very filling and hits the spot if you’re missing Turkey, or just extremely hungry and want to eat everything. They’ve also updated their menu recently, adding kebab and shish. I tried the kebab and the meat is very tender and delicious. I’d definitely give it a try for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

This place rocks! Super nice people and delicious baklava. We basically bought a box with samples of all the baklava, and there wasn’t a thing I didn’t like in there. Everything was super delicious! Also, their baklava is sweet but not sickeningly so. I have had too many pieces of baklava that are just cloyingly sweet, where you can barely eat one piece – this is not the case at this place. My favorite one was the hazelnut milk one!

One of the best food across the city, in my humble opinion. I would highly recommend everything about breakfast here, as well as chicken wrap, lettuce dolma, shish kebab and all the desserts. Service is also remarkable. Thanks for making us feel home.

The upscale décor and good service portend a fine light meal. Baba ghanouj was rich, with a deep flavor. The pita accompaniment was a little disappointing, both in quantity and taste. Pide would have been better. Our other starter, a pancake(similar to gozieme but I am not sure what they called it) was delicious and served with a generous portion of yogurt. For our main courses, we had sandwiches. My colleague enjoyed a vegetarian wrap, I had the sujuk sandwich with halloumi cheese. It was savory and just the right size, We had a tiny baklava and cherry pastry for a final sweet taste, ending on a good note.

You can find a better Turkish restaurant/café in Manhattan. But Gulluoglu is cozy and next to my office, so I am a regular there. Prices are pretty cheap too. Also, any Turkish food is good, even in the most mediocre café. Kumpir is good, spinach gozleme is great, shepherd’s, and tasting platter are amazing. Most of their desserts are ok, but rice pudding is not what it is supposed to be. Their teas are really strong. It’s just like coffee, so if you can’t sleep after caffeine intake, don’t order Turkish tea for dinner.

Güllüoğlu is a top brand in Turkey for baklava, yet they are doing a good job here in New York City when it comes to deserts. If you have never tried Turkish baklava before, you didn’t have a real one. It’s juicier and lighter than a lot of other dry ones on the market. They offer a good selection of Turkish brunch items as well, like soujouk eggs(a type of spicy Turkish sausage) and kumru sandwich. Too bad they don’t have a store in Washington, D.C. where you ran into Turkish people in every corner. They might as well consider opening a location here.

For the record I give them 3.5 stars. It was okay. I mean the pastry stuff does come from turkey but I don’t know something about transporting my food from overseas it just doesn’t sound right. The Burek was pretty good too not the best but if I was in the area I would have it most likely. The baklava was good it was, again, not the best, a bit dry but overall it was tasty. I also had this chocolate cake type thing it was okay too. It isn’t like the food in turkey that’s for sure! But I guess it’s close enough in NYC. The service was very good and the girls that took our order we’re very polite and friendly.

I waited until i try it for 3 times at least to write a review. This place has a new owner and management now, which made things shift to the better. The food is really good, the tea is amazing, the baklave is fresh and doughy, but the most important thing is the service! The lady who served me in the last two times(night shift) was lovely. Her name is Mimosa, and she smiles, answer the questions and crack jokes with the regulars. She chose 4 types of baklave for me and all were excellent. So the bad service is out of the door i guess with the new management. U can go and set for the tea only, many people do. Or try their food. Salads and sandwiches are very good. It’s a clean place, and well let if you wanna read there. I will be going back for sure.

While walking around this part of midtown, I was hungry for something outside of the bagel/muffin realm of breakfast foods. In my journey, I found this place. I’m a big fan of spinach pie and cheese pie, so was excited that they were freshly made. My experience is with the Greek version of these dishes, but the Turkish is also delicious. The servings are quite generous and filling. Between the two pies, I was full for the whole morning and feeling good throughout the day. It’s a very cute place — looks like a lot of people are regulars. Friendly staff, though my questions were often met with a blank stare for a short while. Still, good times and good food. Especially for something to pick up on the go. I’m going to remember this place the next time I’m in midtown, where there’s a lack of good options for this kind of snack/meal.

Haven’t sat down here, but taken the baklava to go. It is the best I have found in NYC over 20 years of discriminating taste testing. Well worth the hike over to Turtle Bay.

This is one of my first stops when I am in town… Perfect place for Turkish breakfast/brunch. I recommend the simit sandwich or the kumpir(baked stuffed potato) with Turkish tea. The place has been newly renovated. It is super clean. I am not sure why the other reviewers keep complaining about the service because the servers are very attentive and polite. I have been going here for years and I never had a problem. I highly recommend…

Hands down the best baklava in NYC! This place came highly recommended from 2 Turkish friends and I have a friend who always brings baklava from here to parties and they are freakin amazing. It’s very hard to put into words the experience you have when you taste them because there’s nothing remotely close to these baklava. They are immensely dense and rich with flavor. Almost flakey and buttery at the same time. Sweet but not sugar tooth sweet like others. And beware, highly addictive and will make you one stingy mofo. Lol. I highly recommend the baklava. I will have to try the green pistachio ones. I hear they are fantastic too!

Cute little spot. Nice and clean. Just stopped in after walking by and noticed the pastry display. We ended up getting dinner. To share, we had this pastry with ground beef in it. I wanted beef and potatoes but they were out. I also tried the meneken(sp?) dish, which was basically really good ratatouille with soft Texas toast. Great portions. The sandwiches are also delicious. I tried one with chorizo and cheese. Baklava was small but great! Overall, great prices for this part of the city. Very casual but still a nice ambience.

Terrible place, terrible service! They don’t care their customers. I went in and got out of the store 3 times waiting a little outside and nobody asked why I was waiting for or what I was asking? And last time I couldn’t help but asked a waitress who is short and with colored eyes about that? Instead of apologizing she started arguing with me. And nobody in staff that saw us arguing said something. I don’t understand what their problem is. Actually the previous day I went there there was an extremely nice waitress. It was early in the morning. Only she and another guy in the kitchen were there. They were so helpful. After that day I actually found the reviews a little strange. Because everyone was complaining. So I went there again the next day. The waitress I saw previous day wasn’t there and the place was chaos. Who is who? Who is responsible from what? Are we ordering and sitting or sitting and waiting for the waiter? Somebody tell me something. What kind of place is this? Finally I walked out and headed to simit sarayi! These staff should be changed immediately. All of them are inattentive and rude. Otherwise this store will have to close its doors.

Just the other my Turkish friends and I were chatting about this store. We had ramen across the street and was returning to the car, we instantly recognized Gulluoglu. We had to make a pitstop and wash down the fatty ramen stock with some Turkish tea and well, some pistachio baklava and Turkish delights. The pastries were so good it reminded me of my Turkey trip a few years ago. It was wonderful to run into the store by chance.

I love baklava(the Turkish variety trumps all other varieties in my opinion)… the texture arising from the combination of the layers of phyllo and crushed nuts(chestnut, walnut, or pistachio) soaked in a light yet sweet syrup is unbeatable when done right… Gulluoglu does it right! Both in Turkey and the US. I sampled an array of varieties, each delightful. Durum(a thin layer of phyllo jam-packed with crushed pistachios giving this treat a vibrant green hue) takes the gold. Absolutely heavenly. And just a piece or two will alleviate an aching sweet tooth. HOWEVER, the service is dreadful. The waitresses are dishing out far more attitude than baklava. Totally inattentive and unpleasant, during both of my visits this week. I even watched a customer walk out frustrated over being ignored and dismissed for an unreasonable period of time. Based on other Unilocal reviews, it seems like this is not an isolated incidence. This shortcoming drives down my review from 5 to 3 stars. Good Turkish-style baklava is challenging to find in the US, so I will be a return customer much to my chagrin despite the despicable service. [Note: I did not try any other food products here, i.e. borek, simit. So I cannot vouch for these items. However, my carrot juice was deliciously fresh and reasonably priced compared to trendy, overpriced juice shops.]

Just wandering for a spot to take a vendor meeting outdoors, and saw the outdoor seating and remembered wanting to try the baklava here. Service is a bit slow but just fine; coffee was suitable; but baklava was way too buttery. Might try the other food some time, but didn’t think anything special of the spot.
