This is racist! You can modernise words and phrases all you like. It still won’t change the fact they’re depicting propaganda from the 1800’s. I’m aware this theater company will defend this«traditional» production with no regard to anyone’s thoughts or feelings long as it doesn’t effect their bread and butter.

If I could give a no-star rating here, I would. I find it extremely insulting that people still think Yellowface isn’t outdated and offensive. What, is this the turn of the century? Have we not evolved since the time this opera was originally written and performed… or perhaps Gilbert and Sullivan Player’s hasn’t evolved. I hope people are protesting in NY, because we’re going to be protesting Gilbert And Sullivan Players online from all over the world until this show is pulled! Wait, next they won’t sell tickets to Asian people in fear of heckling… which they would deserve. And you call this art!!!

I would give this negative stars if I could. Check your white privilege and stop using yellowface — it is RACIST.

What the fuck is this bullshit. Racists!!! Lets make a show with white face where asians wear blonde wigs and blue contacts. Shut this bullshit down. If the show continues this only shows how much whites do not care how offensive this is and how they are blinded by their privlage. This show can eat shit!

Each time, the use of yellowface has been defended as loving homage or harmless parody. Each time, when Asian-Americans have pointed out that we don’t find the wearing of cosmetics and wardrobe to simulate Asian appearance to be «loving» or «harmless,» our concerns have been dismissed. Which is why, despite my deep personal love of musical theater, I think these«traditional» productions — yellowface productions — of «The Mikado» have to end. Jeff Yang — CNN

I saw the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players twice in Allentown Pennsylvania and Wickenburg Arizona. I saw the Mikado and H.M.S. Pinafore. Though not an expert I have listened to the music a lot and have watched a bunch of productions on DVD. I found the acting and singing breathtaking and the orchestra quite good. I will watch for them because I would like to see all their productions. I loved it.
