«What the fuck are you doing trying to tell me what to do with a razor in my hand?» — a quote from my barber. Don’t come here, ever. It doesn’t matter how bad you need a cut. I showed my barber a picture of what I wanted, and I thought he took too much length off. They cited me for giving attitude as I went to pull money out of the ATM to do their business. I have never felt so awful, with a half-finished cut having a stranger yell at me because I said to give him direction that he wanted. Never in my life have I ever complained about a haircut until this place. P. S. As I was walking out, overheard another barber asking the girlfriend of the guy he was cutting whether they were gonna fuck and cuddle tonight. Can’t think of many contexts where that is appropriate.

If you grew up in or around NYC chances are you only mess with one type of cut, the caesar. Light or dark, line ups, shape ups, tape ups. Buzzers and razors. When I started working downtown the spot I used to hit off of Fordham Road became a hassle to get to, my friend recommended checking out First Choice in the LES. I’m very picky when it comes to barbers, a lot of spots have not got the return from me. But I’ve been a regular at First Choice and have been going there for almost 2 years now. The prices are more expensive than what you’ll pay in the outer boroughs, about $ 12 for a cut and it costs a few extra for a straight razor line up. What? … Yeah, you read that right. But hey it’s downtown Manhattan in 2010. For appointments you only have to call earlier that day. Usually I’ll ring around 2 for a 5:30 appointment. If you stay with a caesar, fade, etc. and recently relocated downtown or need a spot that’s more convenient to slide to after work I’d definitely check First Choice. The crew in here is funny too, so you’ll have entertainment(besides the big screen TV and the music) while you wait for your next cut.
