When you’re tired of waiting in line at HK Supermarket or at nearby Dynasty( ), give Fairtown a shot. They have a very good selection of most typical Asian groceries, without the crowds and even better prices. The service is what has constantly kept me coming back. True, Fairtown is not as large or as extensive as some of the mega super markets, but the people working there will always do their best to help you find something, be it a rare food item or out of stock medicine. They also have a mean selection of various Chinese stlye noodles. This is where I go to get my Yee Fu noodle fix, where a block that is good enough to feed 2 people, and costs only $ 1.99. I’ve been able to find lots of random items for cheaper than most of the nearby grocery stores which is enough to get people coming back often.

In a search for a salvation with a two hour idle break, my fellow Chinese Cantonese and Mandarin classmates/friends and I ventured here for a foodie browse. Chinese grocery is priced very reasonable though not sure about the quality or taste. There is a selection for Chinese imported beer of renown names as Tsingtao, Pabst, Heineken, etc. Fairtown Trading Inc. is a specialty ethnic market serving the New York Chinese community where it enables me to reminsce my country of birth. N.B. Fairtown Trading Inc. management are incompetent in the written English language as Grand Street is visibly noted as «GRANG» Street. The lack of attention to detail is embarassingly pathetic.

Fairtown picks up a star. I’ve been shopping here more and more because the chicken they sell is much better than supermarket chicken, yet only slightly more expensive. That’s given me a greater appreciation for this small supermarket: Chinese grocery items are fairly priced, and the butcher counter is on the ball. The beer and rolling tobacco are aggressively priced as well. The ladies at the cash register are friendly. And I keep coming back.

I buy groceries here occasionally, but the main reason to go is that they have the cheapest beer I’ve ever seen for sale in Manhattan. The prices are confusing because I don’t understand Chinese and I think they’re different for cans and bottles, but you can definitely get 6 loose cans of Macau or Pabst for $ 4.50. They have Bud and Heineken and Tsingtao for pretty cheap too.
