We caught the lemonade truck at prospect park and the«all natural» frozen watermelon slush caught our eye. Sadly it bore zero resemblance to actual watermelon. So we paid $ 4.25 for a medium sized(but actually quite small) cup of sugary, fake-tasting pink ice, most of which we tossed. Yucko.

I’ve been meaning to try Del’s Frozen Lemonade since rumours of their return started circulating around NYC, but the truck never made it through any of my usual neighbourhoods, and over time it became a small thought in the back of my mind. Very recently, my coworker and I were wandering in a hot swelter around Flatiron and boom! A Del’s truck on the corner of 5th Ave and 20th St! Like others have mentioned, the frozen lemonade is not too tart or sweet, just the right balance of both. The downside is that I found the flavour to melt far too quickly for the ice, meaning that a lot of the good stuff is slurped up right away and are left with a watery blend at the bottom of the cup. I’d definitely be a regular visitor if Del’s ever decided to set up a more permanent position at the Flatiron, but the lady staffing the truck was commenting that foot traffic wasn’t as good as their other locations. Sadface.

Attempt #1(failure): Almost denied myself of the frozen indulgence since the weather had soured(nailed it), but then this song came up on last week’s Noon Pacific Mixtape and there was no denying it. Having passed their flagship RI location when it was closed and with no intention of going back, I figured I’d give ‘em a shot in NY. Unfortunately, this(old-in-a-rad-sorta-way) truck has a tendency to leave spots before their original claims on Twitter(in both cases departing Flatiron on 21st&5th before 5 while the other trucks capitalize on the commuters); whether this is due to inventory or lack of business is unclear, but in either event owning up to bailing on Twitter would be helpful(as would responding to separate tweets requesting an explanation), but I digress… Attempt #2(success): Fortunately, Del’s visits the WSP area during the year and my visit was when they were posted up in front of NYU Stern(along with Hibachi Heaven and Sweetery) on one of those 90+ days in September. The guy who helped me was extremely unenthusiastic and borderline demeaning with his glares and silence other than a kinda-condescending ‘buddy’, but I handed over $ 3.50 anyway for a(truly) small, unremarkable paper cup of citrus-infused ice; unlike Richelle L’s, the level of mine was BELOW the top of the cup when served. Whoever set up the listing did so poorly, since it doesn’t list their site and they locked in the location despite needing to spot ‘em or track ‘em — well, as the third review and given the fact that they get buried even in a ‘Del’s’ search, we’ll see if they come back next year.

Perfect frozen summer treat… and who doesn’t love the classic lemon! The ice is not too tart, not too sweet… just perfect! There was a small sliver of lemon rind as well as a lemon pit… so you know it is fresh and not artificial… Apparently, they are a Rhode Island/New England staple… Thank you Del’s, for making your way to the Big Apple to help us beat the heat… especially with our stifling/sweltering summers!
