I agree with other reviewers who were not thrilled with the quality of the hot food/“rotating ethnic buffet” — it’s mediocre and sometimes unappetizing. However, I work at the Graduate Center and am always happy about their salad and sandwich bars– they’re freshly made and comparably priced to other places in the neighborhood. Hit this place up if you’re in the Graduate Center and need a quick bite, or bring your own lunch and eat it in the sun-lit space.

Attention GC faculty and graduate students: If you want to see sunlight, why not go outside for a walk to get food rather than spend $ 20 on 3 pieces of lettuce and an apple? Better yet, tote your own lunch if you’re just going to sit inside the Graduate Center and stare at your laptop while eating. The food is cafeteria food, weighed by the scale, same price for a heavy carrot, egg, lettuce, or piece of chicken. Lousy fruit and ummm if you see sushi there it wasn’t made in the GC, but purchased down the block and the price jacked up. Gimme a break.

I ate some roast turkey, cranberry-apple gravy, mashed potato and broccoli here this afternoon, and let me tell you, I’ve eaten worse at people’s homes for T-day. This place is reasonably priced and the food is pretty good — and the atmosphere is pleasant. Sure, you can eat at any of the other 1000 joints in the neighborhood, but across the street from the Empire State Building, don’t expect quality or value. When I’m in the area and need a decent lunch, I’m taking the GC elevator.

Come here for the glass-ceilinged eating area, not the food. The latter is overpriced and not of particularly good quality. On occasion, when I’ve ventured into their rotating«ethnic cuisine» buffet, I have been left with stomach cramps. That said, I won’t lie: their student lunch special is hard to resist. For less than a fiver, you can get a generously layered sandwich, fries, a chocolate chip cookie, a piece of fruit and a drink. In this economy, and with my student loan debt, you can’t do much better.

Mostly I just think it’s amazing that people that aren’t me felt the urge to review this ‘eating establishment.’ I just came to say thank you to the«thai food» that made me «barf» and also cost like nine bucks. Eff this place. There is a much better cafeteria-esque eatery(if that’s what you’re into) down the street from the Graduate Center called Sweet Pea or something. The food was cold, but at least it tasted good.

Don’t go in hungry. Most of the food is measured by weight. and don’t go in expecting a big selection, especially in the summer. there’s not much of one. overall, I’m not impressed. it’s cafeteria food, so I’d recommend trying any of the other 1,000 places in the nearby neighborhood.

Get your ID out. And a pen. Be prepared for security to corner you, frisk you, and stick a chip in your ass. Made it past security? Good… get thee to an elevator! Figure out what floor the CUNY Cafeteria is on(«Oh, is it 7 or 8? Oh crap, maybe it’s 9!») and emerge in a sky-light lit room of tables and — what’s that smell? Oh yeeeaaah cafeteria food. Yum. Onto the food! Slightly hospital-esque with strong notes of middle-school-lunch. Full bodied, with a touch of work-place-canteen in the finish.

To access the CUNY cafeteria, you need to first check in at the Lobby and present a valid identification. The cafeteria is open Monday thru Friday from 8am to 3pm. I believe its one of the best lunch deals around, and the food was tasty despite the discounted cost. The lunch options vary daily and during seasons/school sessions. The Salad Bar is a staple that is there everyday.
