This place was an NYC jewel. I’m really sad to see it go before I had the chance to bring a loved one. Alex Gray is one of the few artists who’s art can bring me to tears from the beauty and sheer talent that is displayed in every one of his pieces. I’ll definitely be on the 1st train to Wappinger when the new chapel opens!

My boyfriend and I stopped by here one Saturday morning. We were introduced to Alex Grey through his work with Tool. His passion and spirituality is quite evident in his work. As with all meaningful artwork, it’s really a quite different and, in this case, a moving experience to see it in person. I won’t go into specifics about the exhibit, but I would say it’s very well worth the $ 5 they charge to get in. He could easily charge 4xs that amount. If you’re hoping to bring home some souvineers, prints, etc., you should know that everything within the store is also available through their online website.

my friend and i decided to checkout a night of psychedelic film. besides a couple of kids being completely out of themselves, i thought the crowd was really respectful and the first two short films were cool — one was a stop action movie on a chalkboard pretty cool stuff, the second one was about pigeon handlers in brooklyn, now i know why the pigeons fly in circles near my house. alex grey also showed tool’s music video vicarious which i had no problem with, always like his stuff. next up was some house favorite though, i wanna say dr. monty(regular at their events) and that stuff was just straight up cringing. i mean like exploring the dark side of this stuff i want no involvement in. my friend and i walked out and got some air and then both started laughing because the final video we had just watched was nowhere near what we were looking for out of the evening.

trippppyyyyyy… it’s not very big, only a couple rooms. i think it was $ 5 to get in. alex grey is definitely talented. there is something a little cheesy about his art and maybe i wouldve enjoyed it more if i had consumed psychedelics that day or something. the place was full of hippies. and there are these meditation chairs so you can sit on the floor. it was pretty cool…

Beautiful, intriguing, and otherworldly are good adjectives for Alex’s art. From the center of the canvas to the frame to the borders along the ceiling, CoSM is breathtaking in its scope and obsession. While I did not have the opportunity for a guided tour with Mr. Grey, I’ve heard these experiences are fantastic from a number of sources. The no-photography policy is slightly annoying, parking can be a bit of a hassel, and the gift shop needs fine tuning, but overall one of the best individual galleries I’ve ever experienced. A long time TooL fan, a longer time fan of the arts, definitely worth checking out. Not too bad for people watching, either.

This place is amazing. My best night in two years of living in NYC was here for an event with music, DJs, artists, interesting people, and cool psychedelic art. Check this place out! It’ll be a nice change from the larger, standard art museums we all usually go to in nyc.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors is another great little find through Unilocal that I visited last Saturday with my fiancé. If you have a contemplative mind, a spiritual yearning or simply an open attitude about spirtuality then you should visit the Chapel which is mostly art gallery but the art displayed is awe inspiring. I won’t spoil what you’ll find there but the feeling you take from there to me is reminiscent of when I visited the Ashes and Snow gallery. Check it out, its $ 5 and an hour or so of your time that will be well spent.

A ‘must see’ space if you have even the vaguest interest in the New Age, Hippies, Burning Man, hallucinogens and/or religion. I have no idea what exactly the aim of COSM is, but I enjoyed tooling around and pondering.

One of the truly remarkable places on the planet — if there were a new 77 Wonders of the World, I would have to add this«gallery». But is it an art gallery? Or a church? Or a sacred space? Or a psychedelic chill space? We first visited CoSM in January 2007 and visiting CoSM was one of the purposes of the visit. We were not disappointed. We time our trips to New York partially in consultation with the events calendar at CoSM. If you have not attended their Entheologue talks, or their Full Moon celebrations, YOUMUST! Boom Shanti!

I’m so glad we stopped in here during our two days in Manhattan. Seeing Alex Grey’s work life-size is a transcendental experience. The ambiance(lighting and design) of the space syncs with the work perfectly. This gallery is truly unique and beautiful.

there is alot going on here, even when there is nothing going on here. when there is something going on here, its something that doesn’t really go on anywhere else.

Among those of us who know and celebrate it, Alex Gray’s CoSM is the eye of a cultural and spiritual hurricane. On one hand, it’s a beautiful museum space for Alex’s world-renown hallucinogenic paintings – two of which served as the covers for Tool’s albums«Lateralus» and«10,000 Days». At the same time, the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors is a truly sacred space, conducive to just about anything – one might find themselves go from meditating one moment to contemplating the work to participating in a tribal drumming circle(every full moon) to attending a talk on art and spirituality, to dancing like mad(when CoSM parties, they party HARD) or just chatting up the varied, and intensely interesting, patrons of this place. The Sacred Mirrors themselves, around which the Chapel was originally organized, are a series of lifesize paintings depicting various psychospiritual«levels» of the human body. The experience of standing in front of them is difficult to put in words, but worth more than I can articulate. Initially, CoSM lured me with the promise of great parties – which, I must say, have to be seen to be believed. Firespinners. Belly dancers. Two hundred people dressed as their«Avatars», or highest selves. Some of the greatest psytrance/electronic music you’ll ever hear. It’s too bad it’s a fourth-floor studio, but there is an elevator if you need it. One small warning: some of these people are nuts. Totally, off-the-wall NUTS. I don’t recommend New Moon ceremonies for this reason – often the guest speakers represent everything terrible about that whole New Age movement. This place is a lot better than that– just go into it with an open mind, but feel free to leave if it’s not your style. There’s a club next door, if you find yourself seeking familiarity, and often the next week will be doubly fascinating to make up for a disappointing speaker or turnout. So ever wanted a more spiritual and more fulfilling night out than at a typical club? Want to meet fascinating people, experience art in a new way, and maybe have a religious experience? Want a nurturing and safe environment to trip in? I’ll see you at CoSM! Check the events schedule at ; there are various events happening nearly every week, and you’re likely to not find anything like them happening elsewhere.
