So being new to the city, I was looking for a good hair salon similar to what I’m used to in the DC area. Carol is a sweet Jamaican hair stylist who has a lot of energy and always has a lot to say. When I arrive, there is typical salon talk and a basic hair consultation. She proceeds to wash my hair. Things are moving just fine. I liked how she took her time with my hair prior to her styling it, I got the impression she was very knowledgeable about hair care. I knew I needed a trim, because I had just taken my Senegalese twists out my hair the previous day. However, this day, I just wanted a simple wash, blow out and style. I typically don’t let new hair stylists take scissors, color treatment, or relaxer to my hair. So when she offered to trim my ends, I politely declined. She insisted. I said«No, maybe next time» and she proceeded to grab the clippers and do a «small» trim… against what I had advised. When it came time for my hair to be styled, a few other customers walked in the salon and Carol started rushing. She«curled» my hair in about 2 minutes. It was a flat, weak curl in very large sections. I wanted a more defined curl as I described to her, but at that point, I felt like Carol was ready to move on to the next client. In the beginning of my appointment, I asked what the approximate amount would be and she told me that she didn’t like to tell clients the amount ahead of time. I couldn’t quite understand that. I asked her another time during the hair process thinking she would give me a hint and she still refused to tell me. The bill came up to about $ 88.83. Now, where I’m from, hair doesn’t cost that much for a wash, blow out, and style. I understand I am in a new city– NYC at that, but it would have been better if she could’ve broken down the cost of the appointment, but she couldn’t. It seemed like a number she made up. I really wanted to like this place.
