Ordered delivery and a very friendly delivery man was at the door in half an hour flat with the food piping hot. Moderately priced with decent portions. Basmati rice was terrible. Dry, stale and flavorless. But the Chana saag, the vegetable korma, and whatever lamb and peas dish my boyfriend got were surprisingly really good. All of them had tomatoes in them which was odd but still good. Aloo naan had very little potatoes in it and the sauce they sent with it could have been good if it were not so watery… Would order from here again if I were in the mood to make my own rice.

The worst on curry row. Not even worthy of a review.

A 5 course meal costs $ 10 here. We stumbled to this place as we were wandering on East 6th, where there was a myriad of Indian Restaurants. What caught our attention was that a guy standing outside from this place actually kept on mentioning the $ 10 special, and so we decided to give it a try. Because we just had dinner, we only ordered one serving of this meal. Starting off with the mulligatawny soup, it was quite good. It was a good tomato soup base and lots of spices. Next a meat samosa. Not overly oily, and the filling portion was just perfect. For the main, we got the chicken curry, which also comes with rice. Also, poori. This was hot and flaky, and we soaked up every bit of the delicious curry sauce with it. For dessert, we got the Calcutta special kheer, which was absolutely delicious. Made from milk and rice, cardamom and honey, this was a perfect end to the meal. Service was good, and for $ 10, I can’t really complain. Wish I had something this cheap and good back home…

Baby cakes wanted to eat Indian for her birthday dinner, so I asked my sister who happens to be a big Indian fan where she likes to go. Quick answer Calcutta. She then went on to tell me how shes been coming here for years so I figured this was the spot. Picture it rainy night in Gotham city, half soaked. Our party of 4 turned into a party of 8 I had called before hand and they had no issue seating us. The gentleman was very nice about everything. He did try to push a little hard to get us to order more but it was me and 7 girls I was lucky they all ordered their own entrees. I ordered the chicken curry, wanted to play it safe for the first time there. I actually never had indian food before. It was nice, not an overwhelming curry flavor. Birthday girl had lamb curry and seemed to enjoy it. We had some hot pita on the side which was very nice indeed. After dinner I went to the kitchen to ask the gentleman if they could bring out a dessert for her and sing happy birthday. It was more for me then her. I really really really really wanted to see and hear a group of indian men who I can barely understand sing happy birthday. I giggled at the thought of it and figured if after that i died I would had seen enough. Sadly its a tiny place and only he sang but it was really nice of him to do it alone I wouldnt have, but of course we all joined in. Price wise this place is on point, 8 of us and I was able to pick up the check alone. That says they are more then fair. We all left full and happy you can ask for more. Happy birthday babe I hope you enjoyed it.

2.5 stars really. The food was just bland. Very, very bland. But at least it wasn’t too greasy. I had the eggplant, the aloo, and the aloo stuffed naan. The aloo stuffed naan was absolutely terrible — soggy bread with frozen peas and carrots falling out. Yuck. Oddly the RICE was really crappy too.

My husband and I ran a samosa test of four restaurants on this Little India row. Calcutta had the worst samosas, both in the group of four we tried that night and perhaps overall in our history of eating Indian food. The vegetable filling reminded me of strained vegetable soup. It was saucy, mushy, and not very flavorful. I took two bites and couldn’t eat anymore. I’m not eager to try anything else off the menu after such a terrible samosa.

Indian food addict here — Opted for the $ 10 recession special. I have to say I was full on the soup and samosa(vegetable) even before the main entrée arrived. Everything was very fresh and tasty. It takes a little while for the food to come out, but I kind of prefer knowing that the food wasn’t just sitting around. Also, I simply have not found better naan bread, anywhere. It is made for each table in the tandoor oven — you can actually watch the guy making your bread. It’s served piping hot and is fluffy and delicious! One downside — the live music may not suit your tastes. It’s beautiful, but may wear on you after a while. Will also say that the dishes are kind of creamy and heavy, a bit more«Americanized» than I prefer. The spice level is definitely tame unless you ask for more heat. Still tasty, though.

Confession: this is only for their delivery – I mean, I adore sitar players and Christmas lights in my restaurants as much as the next girl, but some nights, I like to chow down on my samosas and daal in solitude. Ordered last night through Seamless Web, and truth be told, the«20% off!» notation next to Calcutta was definitely a deciding factor, although it really seems as if the prices may have been inflated to balance out the discount. I figured that no matter what, though, I would be paying less than I would for a Haveli, Brick Lane, or Baluchis order. Having read nightmare reviews on Seamless Web about how long it took to receive delivery from Calcutta, I was pleasantly surprised when the polite dude came to my door just over 30 minutes after I had placed my order. I know a lot of Indian places near me take longer to deliver(probably from stealth Saran Wrapping all the sauces for transport – I think that’s so cute), so this was a delight. Assorted Indian Hors D’Oeuvres were okay. Various pakoras were overall good, though the banana one was mostly dough and finding the speck of banana was like a treasure hunt(sad, because I love banana pakora). The samosa was acceptable, though a little on the soggy side. The version of Paneer Palaak Tikki was okay, but the cheese inside was either Cheese Whiz or Kraft, which would have been fine with me, but I bit into two large spice pieces that were not a delight for my teeth. Ordered the roti and naan to dip into the main dish: Shag Ponir, what else? I’m pretty sure this is the designated«white girl» dish at Indian restaurants. However, I’ve had it at probably 50 different Indian restaurants in the city, so I’d like to think I’m a pro when it comes to my assessments of spinach and/or peas in cheese(my major is in the Shag Ponir, but i minor in Mattar Ponir). Calcutta’s is a little thin in texture, and I could have dealt with more spinach and a few more cheese cubes. It was filled with almond slivers, which I enjoyed, but lent to more of a sweet taste than that to which I’m accustomed. The portion is definitely enough for dinner and lunch the next day(which I just finished, and my tummy is even more satisfied today). I’ll probably order from here again, but I’ll likely skip the roti(tasted a little off, not stale, but weird), and order more naan(really generously sized – like a giant pancake). Extra credit to Calcutta for sending over complimentary papadum and plastic utensils(hey, sometimes a girl wants to have her Indian feast and not worry about doing dishes later). Really more like a 3.75, but I’ll round up, because I’m nice and full right now.

As a Unilocaler I feel inclined to go to a new place every time I go out. That’s a good thing usually, though in the case of sixth street, I think I’ve hit all the A-list indian spots. I’ve never been to Calcutta both literally and metaphorically, and though it was fairly empty on a Friday night, i realized I should give it a try. I sat down, and a waiter quickly passed. He started shifting things around on the table. Fidgety. Like he wanted to be busy, but there weren’t enough customers. I asked him to bring a Taj Mahal and waited for my friend to arrive. As I sat there I was wondering why the area where the music played remained empty. Live Classical Music it said outside on the sign. Perhaps they’d show soon. 9pm, isn’t that prime dinner time in NYC? Finally my friend arrived and he was as hungry as me, so we wanted the waiter to come by. He came and then left as if looking for a pen and paper or something. Meanwhile someone else passed so we asked for more papadam. Back and forth this went. Finally the guy came back and we ordered. Basic stuff, let’s get to it. Then the real waiting began. I think we waited another 45 minutes for our food. Luckily the Taj Mahal was kicking in so we were getting more patient by the minute. The food finally arrived, and it actually was pretty good. I had Sabz Miloni, and it was fairly light ie not a ton of ghee, and tasty. Also the Naan was fresh. Ravenous at this point, we devoured the food on our plates. Then more waiting. We asked for the check he said sure, then 10 minutes goes by. Weird. Finally I walk over with some money and he produces a check at the register. I give him the cash and return to our table. Now we’re waiting some more for change. LOL This was comical at this point. Finally he brings the change and then kind of hovers while I sperate out the crappy tip from our change. He was quick to grab that! Surprise. Verdict, great food but, word to the wise, don’t go here for great service. You won’t find it.

A 6th street favorite with great live music. Everything is tasty and you can feel free to go off menu for any traditional favorites that you crave but don’t find on their menu. For the price it is harder to find a more delicious and flavorful meals and more respectful and attentive service.

The food was only OK, but the real problem is that, well, I don’t know how to put this delicately, so I am not going to try. A friend of mine coined the term«Anal Fury: from the fiery pits of your stomach» when we are younger, and now I know that he must have been eating here enough to have to coin such a term. One should note that I eat Indian food regularly enough to not have this problem when I eat elsewhere.

I came here for a weekday dining out, and we were somehow the only the customers there(weird experience!) But the food was pretty good and service was really good and attentive(yea of course, since we were the only ones they had to take care of…). Their Lamb vindaloo was good and i really loved their green sauce made of cilantro(sorry, don’t know the name of it, but it’s really common sauce for Indian cuisine) And there was live Indian musician too. Hmm, I feel like this place should be a bit more popular.

I was walking around the area with my buddy last night and we were thinking about getting some Indian food. We randomly walked into this place do to their 10 dollar special. They bring you out a few different sauces to try which were all very good, I especially enjoyed the peppers. I then ordered a meat samosa and a cup of soup. Both were very good. We also ordered two large Kingfishers, which I enjoyed. At this point in time I refused to believe that the meal would actually cost 10 bucks. It was so much food. My spicy lamb vindaloo was then served, which was good but not amazing. However the meat was pretty good and it was spicy. All in all this was a good place to start my night and you cant go wrong for 10 bucks. Tons of food before my heavy night of drinking. Hopefully I will continue to feel great throughout the day and enjoy the WORLDCUP. Go Netherlands

Another special occasion, another great experience here. Mother’s Day: no reservation made for a 2PM lunch I get there first. I am not sure how many people since this was my brother’s idea. I tell the host/waiter it will be six people if my calculations are correct. He showed me a table and I thought it would be fine. I go back out side after telling him that the rest of the part should be here shortly. After about 20 minutes everyone was there and thankfully I was right about the number of people. We get to the table and the host immediately gives us a tray of papadum. At the moment we are the only occupied table. HE gave us menus which included a list of specials, which is unusual. After an appropriate amount of time, our waiter took our order, starting with the older mothers first, then my sister-in-law, then my niece, followed by the two males at the table. Took about 15 – 20 minutes for appetizers to arrive. meanwhile he had brought our drinks including one free glass of wine for my sister-in-law. After giving us ample time to finish our appetizers which were all very good, ranging from samosa to the appetizer sampler, our main courses arrived. The table was packed with food between the 6 people. All the food was delicious. Our server also made sure to keep our water glasses filled and cleared the empty dishes away. When it came time for dessert, he waited until some people who had left the table to return. He took our dessert orders. Our desserts did not take long to be served either. Everything was fresh, the right temperature and delicious.

For me, this is my favorite Indian restaurant in the US. My old gourmet buddy who once lived in NYC took me here, and that’s when I fell in love w/this place. Several years has passed since and I by a fluke found this place! This probably was fate, so I had to go in and eat! The inside is cozy and chill. Atomosphere of the restaurant is like a secret hide out for royal families of India. What about the food? Still great like I remembered. The Indian crowd pleaser aka Chicken Tikka Masala was still as good as I remembered. For sure the best Chicken Tikka Masala in town! With the quality of taste, service, and experience you get here, you might think that the price is expensive. Nope you can have a quality Indian meal for under $ 20(under $ 10 if u come for lunch). I am soo happy I found this place, and will definetly be coming back! Calcutta ftmfw!

The live musician helped to set a romantic/comforting tone… This was my second time going to an Indian restaurant and I had no idea what to order. My friend ordered a mixture of a lot of random things that tasted good, even though I have no clue what it was. The venue wasn’t packed, yet the waiter was slow and it took forever to get our food. This place was A-ok!

Mother Teresa would be rolling in her grave had her soul not have gone to heaven. Even her patience would have been tested. Granted, the price was cheap, the waiter apologetic(too apologetic, actually, which was annoying) about the slow service, and the food tasty. The wait was an hour, although it was a Saturday, but still. It was a spot that looked good on the outside, which is what pulled us in. My saag paneer was too thin, it felt like I was eating collard greens. Baluchi’s was better.

My friend and I were meandering doing Curry Row looking for a place to grub when the manager/owner came out and began to sell us on the $ 10 «Recession Buster» special prix fixe dinner they were offering that night. It sounded decent enough so we decided to give it a shot. The first thing I noticed in, for some weird reason, was the silverware on the tables. They had these really cool looking copper plates that caught my(but seriously, anything would have considering my penchant for shiny things). Turns out that they were just there for decoration, and the waiter replaced them with real plates(which kind of disheartened me). They also had a Sitar player located in the main dining room window who was just going to town on it(from the looks of it, they were paying him with all the wine he could drink), which was pretty cool. The waiter was a bit clumsy when he brought the food out(dropping our nan’s on the rice!), but he was probably new — so no worries. For the appetizer, I ordered samosas which were delectable as always, especially with the chutney they served you with the Chapati bread. And for the entrée, I ordered the Lamb Vindaloo, which I think was just alright. It wasn’t as spicy as I though it would be, and the meat was a little too stringy. Also the Basmati rice that came along with it was a tad bit on the cold and dry side(but no real points taken off there). They served us a complimentary rice pudding dessert(second time I’ve gotten free dessert in a week!), which was a little runny yet not quite enough. I would say that overall, the experience was pleasant — but the food was just alright(and no I didn’t end up getting the Recession Buster $ 10 special, whatever that consisted of). Still, moderately priced, and not a bad place to go with a friend(but I wouldn’t really recommend it for a date).

Go here or Taj Mahal. Though they look different, the food is the same and I swear I see waitstaff and managers go from one to the other. I think that this is the one with the tray and anise and confections to settle your tummy. It’s cozy in summer, but with all the coats and layers in winter, its crowded. Portions are eh, ok, for the price. Flavor seems rushed. Nah I won’t be back. They got an extra star because there was a couch outside their restaurant, with ‘infested’ scrawled on a looseleaf paper, and they left it there. That’s a ballsy move.
