Sometimes in life the unexpected and unplanned can be more rewarding than that which was judiciously agreed upon as a course of action. Consider last Friday when I decided to explore the 55th and Broadway food truck scene, having mentally pre-selected a truck belonging to a brick and mortar shop affiliated with the NY Yankees before even leaving my office. A few minutes later and my plans were cast aside like a black swan event described by Nassim Taleb. Behold a truck that promised«Fancy Moroccan Street Food». Like a wanderer of the empty quarter desert, was this a mirage or an oasis? Had hunger pains finally usurped control of my mind, producing an image of what I really craved? Fortunately the Bistroshopp truck is real and really good with plenty of potential. A menu of various tajine platters tempted me but I was looking for a more hands on experience. Enter the merguez sandwich, which at $ 10 was priced right so I ordered accordingly.(When I return I may just have to try the roasted lamb meatballs in a gruyère cheese sauce) The wait was about 10 minutes for my sandwich and ultimately proved worthwhile. The fellow taking my order moved the line quickly as we then moved to the area of waiting, distracted by smartphone diversions, keeping one ear attune to the arrival of orders. I stared at a truck with a message of seizing the donut and began to consider bringing a baker’s dozen back to the office. Fortunately for my wallet it was time to pick up the paper bag containing my sandwich and move on. Two thin links of merguez left a bit of wiggle room in the baguette surroundings. Accompanied by roast onions, parmesan and tomato spread, the first bite was confirmation that I had made the right move. I just wish every bite packed as much merguez as that first bite. Perhaps it’s the geometry of merguez that makes meat maximization per bite a challenge. All that aside, this was a delicious sandwich that I would try again after making my way through the available tajines. As of 12:30 several items, like Moroccan tea, were already sold out so I advise an early stake out.(Or try and go when the weather is less pleasant!)
