Cool outdoor public art installation on Broadway in the Garment district. Avian Avatars is composed of 5 sculptures each made with recycled materials depict 5 types of birds. Each is over 15 ft high and one is installed on each block of the pedestrian mall from 36th St up to 41st St. Though they are open mesh construction made from intertwined branches, each has a distinct shape and characteristics that instantly brings to mind that species. Each is adorned with some kind of reused material, such as used«Caution» tape on the Crow, surgical tubing on the Falcon, orange plastic construction netting on the Hawk, plastic shopping bags on the Owl and plastic packaging crowning the Pigeon. I take this as a statement on the impact of the human race, its excesses and waste on the environment. Each sculpture is also representative of an aspect of the human condition and has a poetic quote on its respective base. When an artist evokes a thought or emotion with their work, then she/he has accomplished their job. See them, ponder them, learn from them. The Tourist — A Victoria Crowned Pigeon «Visitors drawn to the vibrant city shape culture with their impulsive consumer behavior.» «Who we are cannot be separated from where we’re from.» — Malcolm Gladwell The Realist — A Red Tailed Hawk «Everyone has a killer instinct, a desire to fly and an ambition to achieve their fifteen minutes of fame.» «When it comes to luck, you make your own.» — Bruce Springsteen The Tastemaker — A Falcon «An uncompromising harbinger of taste, the critic is not a populist.» «The truth is not for all… but only for those who seek it.» — Ayn Rand The Great Spirit — An Owl «A humble leader embraces the strengths and weaknesses of humanity and inspires from a spiritual perspective.» «Not all of us can do great things. But we can [each] do small things with great love.» — Mother Teresa The Scold — A Crow «A raucous chatterbox has an opinion on everything.» «I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life…» — Henry David Thoreau For a limited time only from Jan. 5, 2015 — Apr 30, 2015!
