Alteration Specialists of New York – Downtown

I can’t speak to their services as I did not end up getting anything done, and I am sure they’re as great as everyone claims. However, when I took my dress in for a fitting to receive an alterations quote, it was a little more than I expected to pay for minor alterations.
Assuming they’re great at what they do & you certainly get what you pay for, just outside of what I wanted to spend for a quick tuck and tighten.

Used ASNY to get my wedding dress altered. It was a sequined dress and I was worried about how they would alter it with so much embellishment on the dress but they made it look easy — and the price was reasonable too. If you have something that needs to be altered and you want it done right, this is the place to go.

As good as everyone says.
I had a silk fitted designer dress with a giant thick zipper, an intense design, and very high expectations… and they had no problem with any of it.
The front desk girl was incredibly nice, I just walked in on a Saturday afternoon, didn’t wait more than 10 minutes (didn’t make an appt), went to the back, changed into my dress, the tailor asked me what I wanted, he pinned the dress and was really meticulous about the whole process. I wanted MAJOR repairs… we’re talking taking something in more than 2 inches on both sides, without losing the shape of the dress and keeping the design aligned. The tailor listened to every word!
I left my dress, paid ~$ 85 (yes expensive, but you’re talking about fine silk designer dresses… no ones tailoring that for $ 20), came back a week later, tried on my dress and loved it. He did an amazing job! Even added some tailoring so that the skirt angled inwards, which was super flattering.
FYI when I went I saw people tailoring everything from a huge pretty wedding dress to a business suit to a summer dress like mine.
Will be back soon with all my other clothes :)

Such an amazing job alternating my wedding job! I had 4 fittings and each time they were very detailed. They ended up advising me to change the bustle and it turned out perfect. Couldn’t have asked for more. Super easy to work with and get appointments! Thank you soooo much!!!

I have to agree with everyone else with these guys. Its very difficult to find a tailor that does good work, does it quickly, on time, and also speaks fluent english in NYC. Finally, they exist. Not the cheapest place in the world, but in my opinion, worth it, and Im not the easiest customer to satisfy. They also do leather. which is becoming increasingly difficult to find.

I don’t normally write Unilocal reviews but I had to share that this is really the best tailor in NYC! Right by my apartment and such a high end experience — nothing like your average tailor. Would recommend to anyone.

I recently went back to these guys to get more stuff tailored and the experience was just as good as the first. They made sure to thoroughly communicate with me in order to ensure that I get a perfect experience. And when I asked for a small modification after they were finished, they were happy to help. Highly recommend this place!

Best tailors in Manhattan! I had three suits and a tuxedo fitted by them and I have to say the experience was great. Everyone is super friendly and easy to work with. Id also like to mention that they have a keen eye for whats fashionable and helped me pic the styles of my suits accordingly (business, formal, going out etc.).
All in all they are a stellar bunch and I highly recommend them.

I had multiple pants hemmed and a few suits altered by Alterations specialist. I was extremely satisfied with the finished alterations and the quality of the work put into them. My suits have never fit me better! Sona and the entire staff were very helpful and friendly, right from the moment I walked in. Had a great experience with them and recommend and trust them with all my clothing.

The best customer service in alteration in New York. Sona is very professional individual and really goes beyond customer service.

This review is long overdue, but very necessary!
I cannot rave enough about Nigel and his dedicated team of specialists. Tamra from Ever Swoon wedding planning recommended Nigel to me. I entrusted Nigel to alter my wedding dress to perfection. I have a very petite frame and he made my strapless dress fit like a glove! The process took 3 fittings and I became very close to Nigel and Toni… I felt like family by the time I was done! Not only did they alter my dress, but I also consulted with them about which decorative belt I should wear and my hair style.
I highly recommend them and wish them much success!

Used them once to take in a pair of pants and let the darts out of a shirt. Work was decent on the shirt and pretty good on the pants, but seemed a little pricey. Due to their proximity I decided to try them again.
I called for a quote to have a shirt tapered in the sides and sleeves. Despite «Taper Sides with Sleeves» being listed on their website at «$ 22.50-$ 35 each», they informed me it would be $ 80 dollars total and that «each» means each side or each sleeve, not each shirt.
$ 80 is an outrageous amount to just have a shirt tapered (can get quality MTM shirts for $ 100). Will not go back.
UPDATE: I changed to three stars since owner sent me a nice email apologizing for the confusion and saying that they are in the process of updating their website. However, they are still keeping the way-​too-​high price, so despite the attentive customer service, I can’t give a great review.

All in all, I agree with most reviews for this place. Wonderful work, but very overpriced. I had trouble finding the door since there are two with the number on the address, but I called and with instruction (next to anthro) found it very easily.
The employees are very professional and friendly. They were conversational and professional throughout the fitting and pinning. I brought a skirt from Banana Republic for work that I needed to be hemmed (with a lining), and I expected it to be around $ 30 max. It was $ 55!!! When they told me that, I almost had to lift my jaw back off the floor. Since I had already done the fitting, I decided to leave the skirt, especially since I needed it and didn’t want to waste the time and go somewhere else. *They should have given a price quote early on. I’m a broke student and really need the best deal.
The skirt ended up looking great, and was hemmed very well. They had it ready and retrieved it quickly when I went to pick it up. This is the kind of place you go to to alter an item that is very expensive or important to you. Like something that is $ 400. And if you still have money after paying $ 400 on that item.

An absolutely wonderful experience. I hired Nigel & his team to take in and build up my Matthew Christopher wedding dress (purchased at a Housing Works event, and it was likely a size too big). He was patient and brought a healthy dose of amiability and joy to what can be a very stressful process.
We added sleeves for religious /​modesty reasons, took in the heavy dress significantly to fit my body, shortened, and created a French bustle. Nigel worked with me to find a style I loved. Once he takes on a bride, he makes absolute sure the client walks away excited to wear the dress, and it was a success!
While I initially had a bit of sticker shock at the proposed price, seeing how much time and hard work the entire team put into my dress, I was very very satisfied by the end. I’ll surely send my friends here for their wedding alteration needs!
My husband also had his suit tailored here and was very happy.

No better tailor in NYC. amazing team, convenient location and stellar knowledge of garments and fit.
He did an amazing job even with an old leather jacket that I wanted the collar reworked to fit a modern aesthetic. They nailed it!

Just to level set my review: I’m a 5ft female of…“unusual” proportions. I grew up with a mother who (in my humble opinion) is the best seamstress in the world, having done all my ballet costumes as a child, my wedding dress as an adult, countless pants and shirts in-​between.
The good thing about Alteration Specialists is they never once turned any of my jobs down. Most alteration places in Manhattan have told me: «Nope, can’t be done, you should have bought a smaller size.» Um, no sh*t, sherlock! But not here! Nigel instead says «these are fabulous, we’ll make them fit.» He can be a bit short at first, especially how fast he works if they are busy (which they usually are), but if you chat it up with him, he’ll warm up quickly. He knows what he’s doing, which quite frankly is all I care about.
If you need a good tailor for a job that is difficult: I’m talking, silk Lanvin wide leg pants that are 3 inches too wide on each side or a culottes that need to be just the right hit at the calf — these are your guys.
The downside is they are pricey, even for quick jobs that I could have done myself if I had a sewing machine (strap shortening, single stitch sleeve hem). If you need an easy job — save yourself the $ and take those to the dry cleaner.

I’m giving this business an «A-​OK’ rating. I had two simple alternations done: shortening the sleeves on a jacket and taking in the seams on a skirt. When I tried on the jacket, I thought the sleeves were a bit too short. I communicated that I thought they were too short, and the person helping told me that they could lengthen them, but since I needed the jacket for tomorrow that would do me little good. Afterward the event, it was simply not worth the trouble to get the sleeves lengthened. Likewise, the skirt almost looks too tight. Not worth the expensive prices for simple alternations in my opinion.
I was willing to pay the higher price because I assumed that they would be able to tailor my suit and jacket to work with my figure, but that just did not happen.
Everyone was nice, though more interested in attending to what I assumed were repeat customers with more expensive alterations.

Just a quick shout out to Nigel and his crew for doing an amazing job with altering both my wedding dresses. I am 4’11″ and pretty much every article of clothing I buy needs to be altered. I had 2 mini dresses: one for City Hall and one for dinner and I felt beautiful in both because the dresses fitted so perfectly. Nigel is personable and professional and he is the the one that I’ve now appointed to alter all my clothes moving forward. It is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Also, Toni, is little miss sunshine with her big smile and friendly personality.
