The food was very mediocre and the price was insane. For an 8oz haddock, 4oz haddock, 2 orders of chips, a can of coke, and a bottle of beer I paid almost $ 50.

A small fish and chips spot within the Little Britain area on the west side of NYC. Their fish and chips are delicious! I also ordered the fried banana as well, which was tasty too. It was decently priced and basically felt like being back in London. All in all this is a great spot!

Fish and chips with salt n vinegar washed down with a can of Lilt. Just like being back in a chip shop in London. Decently priced the décor bit fancier than the usual chip shop back home with signed pics of British tv shows. I enjoyed the food and ambience.

Flaky, crispy and flavorful, that’s exactly what I want for my fish and chips. the sauce that comes with it is also good. A little pricey, but I think its a fair deal considering the huge portion and the quality of the food.

My favorite fish and chips place! Small place, so it’s good to just grab a bite there(no tables or anything like that) or to take to go. So worth it though! I think it might be by the same owners as Tea & Sympathy next door, which is another must-try!

Fish and chips fried up by people from across the pond – awwww yiss, gimme dat. I’ve visited a few times, and this comes pretty close to being my favorite; I really like the haddock and the cod. This place is most definitely more of a «joint» than anything else, with very limited space to stand or sit – unless you’re lucky, be prepared to grab your food to go or if the weather’s nice to sit on the bench outside.

It is a small spot, nothing fancy, just the basic essentials only. They have some counter seats and one small bar table, maybe total of 8 or so seats. There are also couple of benches right out side, so on a nice day, and if there is no seat left in the inside, you can eat your fish & chips outside as well. The menu is rather simple, deep fried seafood, chips, mushy peas, baked beans, deep fried beets, etc. They also have some savory pies and desserts. They also deep fries some candy bars as well. We ordered fish and chips, and the fish was very juicy and flaky, not over-cooked, and with simple seasoning, it really brought out the great natural flavor of the fish. The chips were also really nice, lightly fried, crispy on the outside and soft, potato-y in the inside. One order of chips is enough to share, so unless you want whole bunch of chips, you might want to order just one to share, instead of everyone getting their own chips order. I am so sorry to be writing such a sad review. I had such high hopes and, based on prior reviews, clearly should have ordered the fish and chips. On the other hand, I blindly ordered the chicken fingers and chips for takeout. The space is very small with lots of fun British stuff on the walls and the guy behind the counter was nice enough. My order was ready in about 10 minutes, the first thing I noticed was that the chips were under cooked and super greasy. While I understand that chips in England may not typically be cooked as much as here in America, these were grossly prepared with a raw potato crunch in every bite. After 3 tries, I tossed the chips in a nearby trash can and moved on to the chicken chunks(they don’t have fingers). Honestly, I was pretty hungry and figured if the chicken was really good, I would happily move on and just chalk it up to a bad night. I bit into the first heavily breaded chicken chunk and hit an intense wall of gristle. Grossed out, I tried again, and bit into the second chicken chunk… gristle again. Now I was starting to get pissed, WTH??? Did they only serve chicken gristle? Now on a fact finding mission, I bit into all the rest of the pieces, and there was varying levels of gristle in every. single. one. I am not a Unilocaler who takes pleasure in writing negative reviews. My hope is that a business might take note of an honest account and rethink some of their practices. I, on the other hand, will never stop into A Salt & Battery again.

Food was great! Best fish sandwich I’ve had so far. Chips were made well and you salt to taste. Tried the mars bar and even though it was pretty good not worth the 4 bucks. Just doesn’t make sense to pay that much for what you’re getting. Staff seemed pretty friendly as well. I’ll def come back. Portions are huge!!!

Update: Regretfully I will take abandoned at a star. $ 5.50 for a bottle of HP sauce is rediculous. I know this because my English boyfriend knew where to get one for $ 3.49. I should have listened to him instead of insisting to go on my own!:( Two words. Chip butty. Americans think this is weird, but I have enough English in me to think it’s freaking amazing! While a chip sandwich isn’t something you can eat every day, it’s still a nice treat. It’s a small place just like the chippies in England I’ve been to. So that adds to an authentic feel.

Best fish and chips I’ve had in the city! The shop is small with maybe only eight or so counter stools to sit and eat, but even if you have to stand, it’s worth it. Order your choice of fish with a side of chips(doesn’t come with potatoes), then season to your liking with salt and vinegar. The tartar sauce that comes with the fish is also quite good. The portions are pretty big, so keep that in mind(my friend and I split a basket so we could get dessert afterward). Great meal for a cold winter day!

Real good fish & chips!!! Had the cod and the chips. Nice and crispy on the outside and the fish was super flaky. The chips were so good as well. Not only. Crispy on the outside but nice, soft potato goodness inside. Not much seating however you want to eat while it is hot.

The only place you should ever go when you want fish and chips! Whenever someone even mentions fish and chips, no matter where I am, this place is the first thing that pops in my mind. I’ve only been here a handful of times, but I’ve never been disappointed. Prices may set some people off, but believe me it’s worth it. English football radio on in the back, regulars talking about the next weekend’s matches, it doesn’t get any better than this.

I went here for a little fried birthday treat. COD. Yum. Tartar sauce. Yum. Ginger Beer also. They were so nice they fried me up a Lion Bar — a complimentary birthday treat! I split that with my husband. Wow melted chocolate, caramel and wafers inside. British chocolate is so yummy — wow fried is unreal!

I don’t know anything about Fish & Chips really but surely two orders of pollock plus chips and a bottle of water can’t be worth $ 29? I mean the quality both times I tried it here was just ok at best. Fries are kind of soggy and just your standard fries really, no cooking talent to them just grease ‘em and fry ‘em up, but they’re $ 5?! Fish was kind of tasteless as well. Seems like highway robbery to me. I feel bad eating it outside and luring all of the British and Irish tourists in.

Disappointing. I had such high hopes but I think I expected a lobster roll or something Maine /seafoody. but it was just fried fish and really bad french fries… how do you mess up french fries? The sole was good, I’ll give it that. But the pollock had very little flavor. i couldn’t have the tartar because of dietary restrictions. It was set up cute with British servers and the Beatles blasted but in the end, the food wasn’t even decent enough for me to bring friends here.

As someone who is from England I’m telling you early on this is a great place to get a serving of fish and chips. The prices seem steep but the serving size is actually quite high and given the quality personally I think its more than a fair price. The Cod and scallops are great and Im really surprised about the amount of scallops I got too. The chips are great as was the meat pie, Steak and Guinness I believe. Some customers there seemed to be concerned with the«lack of taste» but its meant for you to add salt and vinegar to adjust it to your flavour. People seem to complain about lack of space but remember this a «chippy» sort of the equivalent of a hole in the wall takeaway(think of 2 bros pizza or one of those hole in the walls) so don’t expect seating or really any comfort. So know what you’re getting in to. I highly recommend it, please enjoy

A couple of years ago I’d worked near this restaurant, and became hooked with their made to perfection fish n chips… Then I got a new job uptown and for some time set out to consume within my local area. This past Monday I decided to enjoy some fish n chips and made my way to Salt and Battery to enjoy what I remembered was a great option; however, I was disappointed and upset, as my order(and that of a friend) was terribly bad. The Cod didn’t have any taste, other than that of the greasy breading(horrible to say the least); the chips were not even cooked, and were soaked in grease, for a horrendous taste. To make matters worse, the eating area(which is very small) was very dirty, and the price too expensive for what we got. In short, until ownership doesn’t get it together and bring back that original formula they once had, this is a place to avoid at all cost!!!

First visit, small dive place, not good for groups, seating is limited. I ordered large cod with fries, and bread and butter. The cod is a good size, with a light crispy batter, not greasy at all and came with tartar sauce. The fries aren’t anything special, and the bread and butter is just that, buttered bread. The usual malt vinegar, lemon packets and ketchup condiments on the table. Enjoyed the cod, but all else didn’t set off any bells.

Came here for dinner after walking down the High Line. I might be short, but everything in here was abnormally high — from the counter where you order to the tables where you eat. Other than that this place is pretty cool. Couple bar seats that face the street and some the wall. and then one table in the middle — aka not a lot of seating. The lady behind the counter was friendly and explained anything we had questions about. After finally deciding, we ordered and they made it right away, so we know it’s freshly fried. I got the large haddock and a side of beans. I expected it to taste plain, because you know, it’s fish and chips, but it tastes really fresh and so good after you pour some malt vinegar on it. Mine even came out in the shape of a fish. The batter was also really crisp, so that was nice. The beans are like any beans you’d expect to get — nothing special there(not sure if it was worth the $ 4). My friend got the cod and chip butty. The cod is sooo good and flaky. The chip butty is ridiculous — literally buttered bread with a stack of chips in the middle. But tasted really good!

It’s a neighborhood joint with barstool seating and allegedly the only place to hit up when craving fish and chips. Prepared a la minute, the cod and haddock taste fresh but the batter itself was soggy — making for an unpleasant visual after a few knife cuts. Most likely a fluke(haha), as I’ve been told that the batter is usually pretty crisp. Love the mushy peas. It’s a beautiful dark green and righteously underseasoned for the veggie purists. Take advantage of all the malt vinegar sitting in communal jars and slather up some tartar sauce. It’s FISHANDCHIPSTIME.

Everything that I thought about fish and chips up to this point was a lie. This place was lovely! Literally the BEST fish n chips I’ve ever had. My girlfriend is from England and we made this a must stop on our trip to the city. When we entered the place her eyes got wide with nostalgia of home, and it was a great sign to start. The menu was simple, fairly priced and everything is separate. We ordered the haddock, chips, gravy, Tango, battered sausage, mushy peas and ended it with a fried mars bar. Their homemade tartar sauce is perfection along with the authentic English malt vinegar. The fish was exemplary: flaky, crisp, fried golden, fresh, and mild mannered. The batter to fish ratio was on point — not to thin — and the batter was glued to the fish; didn’t flake off one bit. Now mind you, everything is fried for the most part, so the reviews talking about«too greasy» or «my fingers got oily» or «prissy dilly twat omg there was a little puddle of oil in the bin» is garbage. This is a treat. it’s not going to be healthy. Just wanted to provide a little PSA for future patrons of this place. Oh and there isn’t a lot of seating. about 10 stools. We have officially made this place our honorary Fish N Chips place and will be returning every time we step foot in the city.

THISPLACEISAMAZING. So I’m from England and I have yet to have any traditional-tasting fish and chips. No restaurant has ever come close and this one absolutely hit the mark. Yes, it is greasy but that’s what you’re ordering. It is all battered! I ordered the battered sausage and chips(price isn’t that bad compared to NYC prices, plus most of it is probably imported so.). It was incredible and I was thoroughly impressed. I love to dip both in the gravy for extra flavor :) My boyfriend had the haddock + chips and was amazed by the fish and the tartar sauce. We will be coming back ANYTIME we come back to NYC. It was that good. PLEASETRY :)

My other half had a fish and chips craving, and we ordered the haddock. We were lucky enough to grab two seats by the counter and the service here is really friendly. You’ll find the batter on the fried fish thinner than other places, but I think it works, and gives the fish an extra flakey texture. I just wish we had shared one oder of chips between the two of us! We were stuffed. So GOOD.

Am rating this for the perfectly fries Cid fish just like in London. The mushy pease is also authentic. I just wish they freshen and spruce up this great spot for fish & chips. It will make everything taste even better! The staff is also quite nice. The one who helped me anyway. Great value and great fish & Chips!

I was feeling some fish and chips for lunch on a Sunday afternoon, and I had this spot bookmarked for awhile so I stopped by. It’s a small space, with barely any room for dining in, so we ended up eating on the bench outside. Ordered the haddock, cod, chips, and fried beets. Everything is made to order, so you’ll have to wait a bit for your food. It’s a bit expensive, since all items are ordered individually. They are good at frying stuff here. Batter on everything was super crispy and both fish were very tender. I found the haddock to be better than the cod, which tasted a bit fishy. The fried beets were OK. The chips were good, but not something you wouldn’t be able to get elsewhere. Come for the fish really, not much else.

Ok, not the healthiest place to go after a workout, but as today was cold & snowy, it was the perfect day for some authentic fish & chips. The fish is great — flaky and crispy, but not over-battered and not soggy either. I like to get the combo with cod & haddock or pollock, sometimes I get all three, as well as the chips, and sometimes I’ll do the deep fried Mars or Lion bar for good measure. This chips are good, but the star of the show is the fish. Oh, and I love their malt vinegar! I recommend coming here when it’s cool or cold outside as it does get pretty hot in there in the Summer time. And if it’s a dreary, rainy day, it’s the perfect place to make you feel like you’re back in London.

My fiancée has fond memories of some favorite places in the village when she spent time here in college, so we decided to dedicate a day of our NYC trip to visiting the various shops and eateries. A Salt & Battery was one of the first places on the to-do list. Walking in, it is pretty much what you would expect, just a small fish and chips joint. There are some bar stools for you to sit, and this place seems fairly popular as there was a constant stream of customers during our visit, further enhanced by those wanting to escape the extremely cold weather that day. We decided to roll with the Cod(looking back at the reviews, looks like the haddock is really what is popular here) and some fries to accompany it. It was a golden, thick, piping hot piece of fried cod served on a massive bed of fries. The flavor was about what you would expect, juicy chunks of fried fish, with a moderately crusty batter. All in all, pretty solid fish and chips, definitely good enough to warrant going back and trying their other types of fried fish.
