this place continues to go downhill. it’s a shame for a place that used to be so good and popular. The food is getting worse and the menu is all over the place. sushi, pasta, burgers, comfort foods, mexican? After several very mediocre meals(at a high price, I might add!) we’ve been reduced to just getting take out burgers from here– the burgers used to be pretty good… last night we did this and even the burger is now lousy. We live down the street and would love to give them more business, but it’s just not worth it. The décor is nice, if dark, but there’s not a welcoming vibe or any reason to go hang out there. in it’s past incarnations as the original Sails and also the River Cat Grill, there was always a friendly, local vibe. People wanted to go there. As a local, I can say it’s now off everyone’s radar. Scale back your menu, do fewer things, but do them better, and make it a place people want to be!

Sails has terrible service. There was a piece of glass the size of an ice cube in my beer, and the management was barely apologetic. They offered no compensation on the meal.

Sails has gotten increasing worse. I had the worst Caesar salad ever there last night. 4 tiny overcooked shrimp that tasted rotten. Sent it back and got a hamburger which was equally terrible-tasted like a frozen burger on a cold stale bun. Will not be going back, skip this place!

Enjoyed a few beers and a nice brunch at Sails a couple of weeks ago. It was the middle of the day on a Saturday in January(no more football), so not exactly the peak period. The food was decent enough and the bartender was really talkative given we were the only people in there. I think this place is probably pretty good given they have like zero competition in the local area. I think that it is probably a little expensive but you are in Rowayton. Anyways it seemed like a good option if you wanted a beer during your breakfast.

We began our quest for hangover cures with at Sails American Grill. It all started with a round of breakfast shots, consisting of Jameson, Maple syrup, OJ, & topped off with a strip of bacon. Our journey continued with the infamous truffle fries, salty, delightfully greasy, with an earthy, savory tang. Amongst the weary travelers, we consumed mac n cheese, Lola burger, Sails Benedict, and a cheddar cheese omelet. Each boasting its own unique remedy. Cool place, not crowded for Saturday brunch/lunch. Good service. Cool bar atmosphere w/TV’s on one side and a nicer restaurant on the other.

We have been to this restaurant in its former persona as river cat grill, was always good but hadn’t been back for a few years. Great location for those fed up with the i95 parking lot as well as a nice town to visit. We went last night to get away from the crawl on the highway. It was not a disappointment at all, it’s still pretty much as it was, nice bar separated from dining area with contemporary feel. Menu not extensive and limited specials, with a small varied wine list. However what they did have was excellent, the«special» pork loin agrodolce with goat cheese polenta and rapini still waters my mouth at the thought, and my wife’s chicken breast off the menu was great, and they were more than willing to change the Faro for garlic mashed potato. Service was very good. Prices are in line with Fairfield county, but not overly so. Will be in our list again, definitely worth a detour whether to avoid the traffic, or destination for a good meal.

Ambiance was a bit dark, but the service was very good and the food was great! We had the Duck Tacos(delicious) and Blue Point Oysters for an app. I had the skirt steak which was decent, and my wife had the Tuna Burger(also good). Truffle fries were tasty. Definitely worth dining there.

I love the fact that unlike other restaurants Sails likes to change up their menu a lot! Only downside is that if you find an item you like next time you come back it might not be there! We love the ahi tuna starter and their burgers and salads are always on par. I have had a couple of different pasta entrees which are no longer on their current menu but the chicken that is offered is really yummy! Plus the turtle sundae dessert is out of this world as its from Luckys restaurant in Santa Barbara! Thank you Skip!

Food is ok. Avocado tacos excellent but watch out for the hot peppers hidden inside! Service is absolutely the worst. Probably the most unfriendly staff I have ever seen.

Bar side is nice on the weekend. Love the live music and Michael is behind the bar mixing a nice lemon martini these days! There was a rumor no more live music, I hope that’s not true. Hoping that’s just a temporary thing so check first before you pop in if you’re looking for that.

We went to Sails for the first time due to a Groupon and it turned out to be an awesome deal! Every seat in the restaurant(inside and outside) was packed, possibly because I procrastinated as usual and it was the last day of the Groupon. We sat inside on a Friday night which was nice because there was live music being played in the bar area. I liked the nautical theme of the restaurant, the sails on the ceiling were a very nice touch. Most importantly, we also really enjoyed the food. The tuna tartar appetizer was fantastic! The potato chips and thinly sliced cucumber it came served with gave it a great crunch. The scallops and grits were just okay, the scallops were cooked perfectly but the grits were a bit bland so the dish just didn’t have a lot of flavor. The pan crispy duck on the other hand was amazing! Cooked perfectly and we wanted to lick the plate the sauce was so good. We finished the meal with the salty turtle sundae, which was delicious. The martinis were very well made and we a couple good glasses of wine as well. The service was the only slight draw back. We weren’t in a rush and were looking for a leisurely meal, so it didn’t bother us at all, but I can see why other reviewers have complained. There wasn’t a friendly hello and it took a long time to get our first drinks and then for the server to come back and take our order. It also took FOREVER to get the check. Overall though, it was a nice place and great meal, so we would definitely come back.

My husband, I and 2 friends we invited out to dinner dined at your restaurant last night. We waited 45 minutes for appetizers. We waited another hour before dinner was served. Other diners were served. New diners arrived and they were served as well, while we sat and waited. When the food finally arrived it was average at best. Not worth the wait. Had we not had guests we would have gotten up and left. I was rather taken aback at the way we were treated. An overwhelming POOR experience is an understatement.

My husband and I wanted to try something new. It was 80* and perfect out. We called on our way asking if we needed reservations to sit outside. The hostess we spoke with said«there’s plenty of room» and«we don’t reserve outside seating». By the time we showed up there were 3 tables pushed together to for a table for six outside. DESPITE the«first come, first serve» policy, that table was *reserved* for dining room overflow. When we decided to leave because we wanted to eat dinner outdoors, another hostess was like«oh, you’re the ones who called? I have a table for you.» What? Seriously? OK. «Not outside though, its in our dining room.» I’m not sure if blonde is her natural color but c’mon. Didn’t you just hear us say(multiple times) that we wanted to eat dinner somewhere we could be outside. Maybe in a few years we’ll forget the idiocracy and go back to actually try the food.

We do not begin to understand the enthusiasm noted by other reviewers. The ambience was acceptable; the service glacial; and the food I will describe shortly. We ordered Tuna Tartar and it was absolutely outstanding. We looked forward to the rest of the dinner hoping that it would be as good. We both ordered veal scallopini that was so tough that I should have asked for a hack saw to cut it. It was served with cold” with asparagus that was barely cooked. The plating was not attractive. The food appeared to be dumped on the plate. They were even slow when we asked for the bill so that we could escape never to come again.

Went back to Sails after a month’s absence. This place keeps getting better and better. I love the combination of the old and the new. For the old the menu features braised short ribs with polenta and cedar planked wild salmon, For the new, the chef let me try his Togarashi french fries(spicy and delicious) which he is paring with flown in Nantucket Bay Scallops(yum). This restaurant gets it. 10% of all lunch checks for the next month are being donated to the local food pantry.

Beautiful sunny 70+ degree day. Great place for babies and our golden retriever was able to sit on the other side of the low fence next to us and hang out while we ate. Food was excellent and prices very reasonable compared to some places we’ve been to recently in Greenwich. We had the Caesar salad, Sails house salad, and sweet potato with lump crab soup special to start. Followed by cod with little neck clams, Cedar Planked wild salmon on hominy cake, and Skirt Steak on truffle fries. Banana caramel bread pudding with homemade praline ice cream was delicious! Will definitely come back. They use Schott Zweisel glasses which always make wine taste better! Casual/dressy atmosphere. Service was spectacular. Plenty of parking.

I love this restaurant. I’ve been hearing buzz on it for a long time and have been dying to try it. While the mixed reviews on Unilocal had me a little apprehensive, I have to say, I loved it! Our group tried a mix of burgers, pasta, french onion soup, tuna tartar and the goat cheese tart. EVERYTHING was amazing. We also split the banana caramel bread pudding which was unbelievable. For the french onion soup and the tuna tartar, I would go back alone. Everything was amazing and I cannot wait to go back!

Visiting the parents from Philly, decided to try out the new spot in town. We got the last available table in the house, which, unfortunately, was maybe 4 inches from every other table, making for a tight squeeze and some awkward elbowing. As per Rivercat, it gets pretty flipping loud in here, especially when the restaurant is full. So if you want to hear yourself think, much less the people you came with, try a less busy night. The service was fairly prompt after drinks arrived, and the food was fine, nothing spectacular but nothing disastrous. I had the butternut squash soup which was quite yummy, and the truffle mac & cheese which was almost too hot to eat and waaaaay to heavy on the truffles. I love me some truffles but it was overwhelming. Both Dad and the BF’s meat came out overdone. I might come back for drinks and apps, but not with a hard-of-hearing septuagenarian of a father.

They changed from the Rivercat to Sails American Grill. Basically, that means they added a sail to the ceiling, a few pictures of sail boats on the wall, and some cleats around the edge of the restaurant. What did change was the quality and variety of the menu. Our table sampled the pizza, the black truffle mac n cheese, and the mussels as our appetizers, all of which were tasty and filling. For my dinner I tagged the sesame crusted tuna with pomegranate reduction which was both fresh, crispy, and fruity. Not to mention the stellar bloody mary that helped wash away a cold, icy night. If you are in Rowayton there is no question you will sit down at Sails at some point and when you do you will be pleased you did.
