I’ve got a home in downeast Maine that I couldn’t sell when I moved away thanks to our good friend the Housing Market. I rented it out several times; each experience and set of tenants was worse than the previous. So, not only did I give up on trying to sell it, I also gave up on trying to RENT it because people are douches and don’t give a shit about anything that isn’t theirs. But then I had a friend who needed a place in a pinch so I let him move in and make repairs/improvements instead of paying rent. He got the place looking mighty fine and when he moved out, I got to thinking about how horribly a Maine winter can treat a structure that’s not occupied. Things freeze and warp, snow builds up on the roof and can push the walls into the floor, then when Mud Season rolls around, moisture builds up and mold grows and mice come in and all manner of Bad News will occur. Maybe the pain and tribulation of renting it out would be worth it just to keep the place from falling apart? Then I got the bright idea of looking into a property manager — someone who could take care of shit for me because really, I’m 3500 miles away and 3 hours behind… I don’t give a rat’s ass if a light bulb blows or the toilet won’t flush. I don’t want to deal with it. So I called around and found Knowles Agency. Out of everyone I spoke to in the area, these guys were the friendliest and most on-the-ball. For a commission of 12%(per month’s rent) and nothing up front, they will not only locate and screen new tenants, they will draw up a lease, manage the property, collect rent & security deposit, and deal with any issues that come up. Amazeballs! More than worth it! I’ve had the pleasure of working with Sandi, Kate, and Lynn — all three have been absolutely wonderful, incredibly helpful, and knowledgeable. I know my place is now in good hands and I don’t have to worry any more. What a relief!
