The majority of the space in this store is devoted to comics and related materials(which is not of interest to me personally), but they have a section in the front on the right with a better than expected selection of strategy games. In an era where stores can fill their shelves with 27 variations of Munchkin, it’s nice to see a store with a wider variety of games. It wasn’t as extensive as some other games stores I’ve seen, but they had a few things here I hadn’t seen anywhere else, and they use the space well.

I felt unwelcome my last visit. Good selection, but while it was reasonably priced my several visits in 2007, it is now overpriced in the internet era. Got told to stand while sitting to decide between two graphic novels. Ended up purchasing neither. There is no way I could have read through either in the less than 1 minute I took to rest or even in the hours the store is open. I felt like a nuisance rather than a customer. Even the chains allow you to sit. While I appreciate it being a place for kids to play games, and while it has a superior selection to any Newbury, It feels cold though organized. Perhaps I’ll give it another go in the future, but I’m in no rush after my last visit.

No serious back issue department to speak of, other than the collected and packaged assortments of short runs or mini series.

Went here for the Jeff Smith signing and then went downstairs after to check out the store. They have a LARGE selection of comics, and a good selection of board/card games too, which is impressive for their tiny space that they’re in. There’s lots of neat, geeky figurines and toys around as well. The person we talked to was extremely helpful in finding us what we needed, answering questions, and even special-ordering something the store didn’t have. We bought a few comics and they were in great condition. I’ll definitely be coming back here again! They have board game night on Saturday too, which I am looking forward to going to. They also have D&D night, Magic: The Gathering night and a family board game night for those who are interested.

I frequented Modern Myths every so often when living in the area during college and continue to swing by during visits. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful but leave you to your browsing(always appreciated!). It’s a decent sized store and they have a good mix of genres. There’s a small section featuring works of local creators which definitely fits in with the Northampton charm. They also have a pretty good sized used section and I’ve found comics for 50% in great condition. I recently asked for help tracking down a particular comic and the staffer confirmed for me that it’s out of print but nicely offered to bring up interest in a reprint to the contact at the publishing house that MM is in touch with. I always prefer to buy comics through the independent shops when possible and the service and offerings at MM make this easy to follow through with.

I live about 45 minutes away from MM and I try and get there once a week, either for comics or for games. The staff is friendly and welcoming both to the practiced nerd(like myself) and to newcomers, something I think they(rightly) pride themselves on. They have a great selection of used graphic novels and games, which provide regular bargains. About a year ago, the store added a separate game space upstairs, doubling the size; while I miss the games taking place within reach of browsing material(and snacks), the added space allows for WAY more gaming. Finally, they have a huge lot with lots of parking(a premium for NoHo) – just don’t park there and go somewhere else – you might get towed!

A great gaming and comic book store. I game at Modern Myths on a fairly regular basis and get all my dice, comics and geekery here. Check it out!

This place is hit or miss(and it largely depends on who is working). They have a nice current selection and a great used TPB selection. I would normally criticize the fact that they have no real back issue collection but considering used graphic novels are rarely found in shops they get some cool points. They do sell out often but I understand they have a business to run. Most of my criticisms rest in the department of customer service. I have been to Modern Myths many times and I have had good service from everyone EXCEPT the guy who appears to be the main owner(guy with the glasses). The problem here is that he works all the time. I stopped going because I was sick of the patronizing comments and feeling like I am constantly being watched like a hawk. I understand that comic nerds are not known for charisma but this guy is like the kid who you grew up knowing who had the best toys but always refused to share them. An experience that will always stick with me was when this guy lied to me about the Comic Shop News periodical. On one visit I curiously asked if they carried it and he said that it actually no longer existed. He then went off into a rant about how the era of free newspapers was bound to end… all this would have made sense if it was true! I later found out that Comic Shop News was still around and that retailers have to pay for it(hence, he was probably trying to hide the fact that they choose to not order it). I would normally give the guy the benefit of the doubt but it was not the only bad experience I have had in there.(My wife even commented«whats his deal?» on her only visit to this shop). They are much better than Newberry(which isn’t too hard) but I prefer Bob’s. If the owner improved his customer service or sold the place– I would probably prefer them.

Very well organized. Amazingly helpful and friendly staff. Never too cool to help or answer questions. Incredible selection of games and comics and graphic novels and dice. Lots of weekly events and games. Lots of specials. Pocky and other candy and a good selection of sodas and milk and juice and water.(Including Mexican Coke… nom nom nom.)

Modern Myths is the kind of place that makes the Valley great. Run by nice local geeks(and I say that lovingly, as a geek myself), it keeps convenient hours and always has a great collection of comics & graphic novels(new and used). Their graphic novel of the month club is lots of fun and kind of a cool service for customers. The collection of used books is almost as extensive as new, which is great for people who don’t want to pay full price. They have a small activities space in the back, but I wish they had more lounging/seating space so customers might feel more welcome to stay and browse longer. Still, it’s totally the kind of place that Kevin Smith would set a screenplay in, and it upholds the great tradition of the local indie comic book shop.

Modern myths sits between a pricey cookware store and a retro women’s clothing store. It is chock full of current run comics, one-offs from every genre, a surprisingly robust board game wall, RPGs galore and Warhammer products. Space is somewhat limited inside the shop but they do the best with what they have. The staff is friendly and talkative and are more than happy to special order something if it is not on hand. There is a public space for board games and role-playing games, though it is somewhat cumbersome if there are more than a few patrons milling about. A fine friendly local gaming store…

This place is the best. It’s clean, they have all the comics and gaming stuff you would ever need. They are open late, have gaming events, sell poki, New and used D&D books. All kids of goodness. Also down the street is pizza a beer. Done.

Best place in the valley for comics, board games, and general geeky stuff. Every time I go to NoHo I have to visit this place. Clean, organized, and a helpful knowledgeable staff. It also doesn’t have that sweaty nerd smell most comic stores have which is always a plus.

Solid selection of comics, from DC and Marvel to manga to indie publications and everything in between. A good selection of Pocky and Ramune if that’s what you’re into, a great used selection, and the staff is wonderful – friendly and knowledgeable. I always stop by when I’m in Northampton and I never regret it.

I have to say I’ve been spoiled by bigger shops in Cambridge, Boston and New York. Modern’s good for what it is– a small indie comic shop mostly in the middle of nowhere. I went here for the first time today. I’m an avid reader who’s just relocated to the area for school, and Modern’s the only place I know for comic books. For Boston people Modern Myths resembles Comicopia in Kenmore Sq– but is definitely much smaller. There were only one or two copies of each book or issue out. They did have a wide selection of indie books, which made me very happy. Even though it’s small, it’s bright and neat and mostly well organized.(As a personal thing– I don’t like it when books are organized by genre.) There was only one staff person there, and she was nice enough. Giant pocky! Lychee drink! Funny hats! Lots of happy making things. I’m not into it, but I saw lots of 20 sided die, some crafting materials and a big shelf of board and card games in the back.

We brought our overnight campers here once a week(approx 6 – 8 teenage boys) and they were super nice and welcoming to us. I really liked how they had used graphic novels/manga reasonably priced and of course, MILKPOCKY! I spent quite a bit of money there this summer, but certainly worth it. I haven’t been in a nicely-organized and all-out cool comic book store like than in awhile.

I brought my son here and we both had a great time perusing manga and graphic novels. The staff was very solicitous, friendly and knowledgeable when we asked about certain items. We bought a number of books and came back again. They will let you sit around and read the material. They have Japanese candy and soft drinks too. There’s lots of good stuff.

At first glance, the selection looks sparse, but they manage to pack a lot of comic goodness into a few shelves. I was particularly impressed with the hundreds of used trade paperbacks — probably the best used section in a comic store I’ve ever seen.
