While driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, my girlfriend and I had to stop to get some gas. Not familiar with the area, we got off the parkway and started driving towards the closest small town looking for a gas station. That’s when we came upon this place in rural North Carolina. We pulled up to the gas pumps which were straight out of the 1950s. No digital display, no credit card swipe, just those old fashion wheels displaying the price and number. It was clearly labeled as not accepting credit cards, so we ventured inside the little rundown structure. The place looked like it hadn’t been updated in quite some time. The counter was on the left, featuring items such as beef jerky, gum, candy, and socks. There was also a menu on the wall featuring a variety of sandwiches. Against the right wall was a bunch of old used toys for sale, really selling the backwoods authenticity of the place. The lady behind the counter was in the middle of making some sandwiches for four older gentlemen sitting at a table watching a TV from the early 1990s(they immediately stopped talking when we entered). I gave the very friendly lady $ 20 for gas and went back outside. The pump as a lever on the side you need to push down to reset the old display. After a few minutes, the pump filled off my gas tank and stopped automatically at $ 19.98(close enough). We were on our way back to the Blue Ridge Parkway. This place gets five stars because, honestly, it was pretty awesome. After driving for hundreds of miles on touristy roads and attractions, it was a nice break to see some rural North Carolina establishments.
