cool island but far more reviews under beer can island. its also called sandspur island not big sandspur island and the address on Unilocal for this is wrong. its not 163rd street, its far closer to about 100th street. its the first island just west of Haulover inlet. google haulover marina on a map look for the inlet that is where the bay and the ocean meet then look west. thats it.

Officially designated as Big Sandspur Island but more commonly and locally known as Beer Can Island and a part of Oleta State Park it’s the real hub of partying and boating activities, especially on holidays and weekends. This is where most of the boaters anchor up or shore in to barbecue, drink, party and raise all sorts of drunken hell, which just might be the reason I love it so much. Some canoe in or paddle board in but most arrive by power boats with boat sizes generally ranging in sizes from the 15 or 18 foot runabouts up to the 42 foot cruiser or sport fisherman. There are really no facilities here of any kind, the island center consists of a dense wood and brush hammock that is so thick as to be totally impenetrable, but the western shoreline consists of a wonderfully white soft sand which quickly drops of, ideal for swimming or mooring your boat close into shore. The shoreline beach area can be trashy, even though there are an abundance of trash bins, and one should not take any barefoot chances as fragments of broken glass are common. The thick growth of the island is infested with aggressive raccoons that if given any opportunity whatsoever, will raid any picnic baskets, food or other such supplies including open cups or glasses of beer or other beverages easily proven by the fact that a drunken raccoon is not an uncommon sight to see.
