17 Hertz Studios was previously One on One Recording Studios, which was built by Hal David and Burt Bacharach. With a huge live room, Studio A was discovered by the 1980’s glam and metal crowd, based in great part on the incredible drum sounds you can get. I recorded the Luis Cardenas Animal Instinct album in there in the 1980’s and shortly after, Bob Rock recorded Metallica’s Black Album there. While the studio was great, it wasn’t perfect. There were some acoustic issues that had to be accommodated. By the time the studio went private in the 1990’s, practically every music act from the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s had recorded there, from Michael Jackson to Metallica, with an occasional foray into the likes of KISS, Marvin Gaye and of course, Dionne Warwick. Unfortunately, the studio went private for a number of years and was allowed to fall into tatters. Facing demolition in favor of perhaps a new Sushi Bar, Jason Gluz stepped in and poured many hours of tender loving care into this historic room. The acoustic benefits remain the same, but Jason spent a considerable amount of time and money correcting the issues we worked around in the 80’s. The control room was remodeled, modernized, acoustically tuned, equipped with an SSL board, and the types of outboard gear a real engineer and recording artist needs and expects. The main tracking room is at the ready for any type of recording you may want, from huge reflective panels, to newly designed and installed reverse sided baffles. Remembering the incredible sound I was able to get during this studio’s heyday, I visited it and met Jason as I was searching for a room to record Rocky Kramer’s debut album. Just stepping into the main room, I could immediately tell that all of the benefits remained, but the warts were gone. This room is as acoustically sound as any I’ve worked in throughout my career. The control room is comfortable, well equipped and is now tuned to perfection. I recorded all of the basics for Rocky there, and can honestly say the magic pervades in abundance! Finally, the management of the 80’s(Hal David’s son, Jim) was terrific, which made the studio extra special. I’m pleased to say that the current management has taken that tradition to a whole new level. Jason makes everyone feel at home; he’s got some of the best engineers in the business(especially Steve Olmon), but I can’t say enough about the entire staff. You can’t be in a more comfortable environment — even if you were recording in your own front room. Wonderfully enchanting studio, quality equipment and superb staff. This is a perfectly honed 1980’s studio environment with all the technological bells and whistles of the past, present and future.
