This review is for their Sunday Brunch Buffet. I don’t think that this place is even open for business right now because on the two Sunday’s that I’ve tried to come after my initial visit, it’s completely dark, when you call the phone just rings and rings and rings and they have had no activity on their instagram or facebook pages. It’s sad because brunch was really good. Well, on to my review. My friend and I arrived on Sunday later than we anticipated due to an incident at the Midtown Tunnel that had traffic stopped, the Downtown Tunnel from Portsmouth to Norfolk was closed for maintenance so we had to take the Jordan Bridge(I HATETHEJORDANBRIDGE) We got here around 1 and it was packed. I’ll discuss the things that I did not like first: I did not like that I had to pay before I was seated(what is this Golden Corral???) and secondly I had to seat myself. The seating can leave a little bit to be desired. It is a lounge at certain times of the week, so they have couches and little booths set up, 5 seats at the bar, maybe 4 tables that seat 4 people and then 4HIGH tables. As I am recovering from knee surgery, it is a pain in the ass to get my big ass up on a high stool. So I was uncomfortable and there were no regular height tables available. There is also a patio that you can sit on, but I didn’t want to sit outside that day; it was way too hot. Anyhooooooo on… to…the…food… Food was pretty good. Patty sausage, link sausage, pork bacon, turkey bacon, scrambled eggs that looked powdered, grits, meatballs(can you say YUMMY) friend chicken, salmon, green beans, macaroni and cheese and some other items. A few of the desserts were included in the buffet. There is also a person that makes omelets and waffles — REDVELVETWAFFLES to be exact and they are topped with the cinnamon roll icing — they were DELICIOUS. I think that this Sunday Brunch Buffet has the potential to be 4.5 stars once they work the kinks out.

I bought a two tier wedding cake from this place 3 months in advance and paid upfront for it. The desk staff said they could do what we asked and we’re sure about the design. We gave them photos of a cake we wanted it to look like. I called a day before the cake was supposed to be picked up and the lady on the phone said she didn’t have an order for me, after a few minutes of looking she found it and asked«what did I wanna know about it?» In a rude way. All I was asking was what time it was going to be ready and how it was going. Anyways. After my family picked up the cake and bought it to the reception I noticed not only did the cake look incredibly lopsided!!! It was poorly decorated and was a complete failure and embarrassing and not worth the 270 I paid for. I wouldn’t suggest this place to anyone unless they’re looking for anything other than a disappointment.

I had the red velvet cake, red velvet cake ball, and a coconut covered cake. It was ok, but not $ 8 ok($ 8 per cake). Too much sugar and oil and not enough flavor.

After a night of restaurant hopping we wanted dessert. We found this place here on Unilocal and decided to try it since it was still open. I am so glad we did! It was a triple D: drinks, desserts, and dancing! I have never been to a place like this before. The four of us ordered 3 different desserts and they were all delicious and huge. Several people came by to make sure we were having a good time and didn’t need anything. Even the owner came by and told us about the graduation brunch the next day. We loved this place. The music was great and dancing was fun. This would be a perfect place for a girl’s night out or a bachelorette party.

Desserts in the front, partaaaay in the back! This is what you’ll expierence when you come to unique set up of Sassi Cakes and Sweets. It’s funny because prior to coming here I was having a discussion with my friends about finding a place to unwind for the night that specifically caters to serving desserts and drinks. And about a week later I found this place via Unilocal.I’ve been here twice and both times the host was very welcoming and explaining what desserts they had avalible in the front. The first time we went I got the cookies and cream cake, and my friend got the toasted coconut cake. The second time I got a chocolate dome cake, and my friend got a brownie indulgence. We each took bites of each other’s desserts and we really enjoyed everything we’ve had from here so far. Service was pretty attentive and our waters stayed refilled. When we went there was a live DJ and strobe lights which is a nice touch while enjoying a nightcap. All in all, I like this little unique spot and I’ll definitely be back.

This is the weirdest place I have ever been in my life! I have never seen a dessert bar that turns into a club at night, because, really, why? It’s a dessert bar. Speaking of desserts, they are delicious! We shared a cookies and cream cake and a red velvet something or another and both were very light and still somehow dense and moist(pause while I shudder at the grossness of the word moist) however, we had coffee and it was lukewarm at best. I get that they focus on mixed drinks apparently, I only know this because the bar was extensive not because I saw a drink menu, but when asked what I want to drink Id like to know my options. There is no continuity to this place. Coming from a business standpoint they really need to get some focus. Are you a dessert bar? Are you a club? Find your identity and then rock it out. Your desserts will make you money, but your techniques are vague and confusing.

This company really needs to update their info and answer their phone. I called on a Saturday around 7pm and there was no answer. And they are not open until 2am on Saturday as it is posted on here.

This place was a major disappointment at 2:30 on a Sunday. The Unilocal pictures for this place are extremely deceiving and there were no desserts there whatsoever. This place has brunch at this time, is «sold out» of the few desserts that they offer daily, but does however have an awesome happy hour. For a place with«sweets» in the title, they were a total let down. :’((((

This establishment is the worst service in town. Sadly to say they are in a ghent, a neighborhood who prides them with uniqueness, kindness, and ultra friendly businesses, sassies is a negative 10 on every scale. I happened to walk in with my fiancé late evening due to being promoted for drinks and desserts. Not a single staff member acknowledge us when walking in. I had to approach the counter to know about the desserts and she responded rudely«that is all we are serving in the glass case. The glass case only had two strawberryiy fillies bread thing and several coconut cookies. To be called a dessert bar there were more chicken wings bones than desserts. Two waitress and a male bartender never came to our table but helped the tables around us. We felt invited and unwelcome as if we had crashed a party that we were not invited. Sassies you are business and money see’a no color sadly that was not the case that evening.

Came in here around 6 pm looking for a cake a few weeks ago and was greeted with the worst service! They couldn’t be bothered to acknowledge me(despite being completely empty except for 1 staff member and her friend), and then when I finally was able to get service I was rudely told that they don’t do same day cakes. OK, that’s fine, I should have called. Do you have anything else? No? Ok. My boyfriend then noticed their cake bites(which were DELICIOUS, but not super special and waaaaay overpriced) and we ended up buying some instead of looking for a cake. They were fine, but this place left a bad taste in my mouth. A bakery that has cake in the name, but doesn’t sell cakes without pre-ordering and doesn’t offer any alternatives with very rude staff? Probably better as a bar.

Another good spot we just happened on. Great deserts and they have a dinner menu later in the day. Picked up a coconut cake, chocolate indulgence and red velvet

This is a super cute place with pink & black girly décor. The food is ok, we went for a work happy hour so we weren’t that picky. Happy hour prices were reasonable. The drinks were good and strong, bartender was amazing. We had, like many others, stumbled on this place after eating at a place right by there and stumbled into the most decadent mini cake display case EVER! It was a co-workers birthday so we got one to go and it was AMAZING! The place was DEAD for happy hour but overall the experience was good. Fast forward 6 months and I called in to order two of the mini-cake things to go and have someone come pick up(I live out of the area now) and she was pretty frazzled and not friendly on the phone when thinking I wanted to order a full size cake for pick up that day. Once we communicated better then everything was a-ok. My friend was able to go in and pick out what she wanted and go on her way. This is a cute place and worth checking out if just for the deserts alone!

So after 10pm, it turns into a lounge or club-type setting. I heard there’s a cover, but I got there around 9pm and it was free. There was music, from an iPod, I guess… and then a DJ set up around 10(and he was pretty versatile). Lots of seating(because not a lot of people know about this place in this party capacity). And lots of room on the dance floor. I was there for my friend’s private birthday party. Still open to the public as late as 2am, Sassi Cakes & Sweets is an actual hidden gem as far as nightlife is concerned. Well, I think so… I actually don’t know how much fun I could’ve had if I weren’t surrounded by friends in the name of a birthday celebration. But I’m willing to return to find out.

A few girlfriends and I were looking for a spot that served dessert and was open late. Saw all the great reviews and figured we’d give it a try. We went on a Friday evening and they had live music playing and a few people dancing. The setup was a bit confusing initially. We sat ourselves at first but realized we wanted to look at the dessert case to see what was available that night. But a waitress will also serve you drinks from the bar and desserts. We ordered martinis which in our opinion were really strong, but I guess we’re lightweights. All of the desserts were super tasty. They had a nice patio out back that was perfect to chit chat away from the loud music inside. Def a good spot for girls night ;)

I went to Sassi with a couple of friends over the weekend for lunch. First impression: HOLYPINK! The walls are painted a bright pink that is quite vibrant when you go in during the day and the sunlight was streaming in. I’m not sure if it’s quite as abrupt when going in the evening, but I do imagine it is still quite the sensory overload. The rest of the décor was very trendy — black and chrome everything. We sat in a booth, and we were quite comfortable. We were originally going to order something from their«not so sweet» menu for lunch, and I was completely on board. The menu was unique and fresh, more aligned to what I would expect to see on the menu at an edgy restaurant in a bigger city than Norfolk, but we ended up deciding that life is too short and that we were going to have dessert first. Needless to say, we didn’t end up making it to the«not so sweet» menu for anything else. I ordered the red velvet cake roll, and it was delightful. Cake is quite often too dry for my taste, so I was bit hesitant. I’m usually more of a brownie/cookie girl myself, but I love red velvet, so I took the plunge. The cake itself had layers of cake with the cream cheese filling, all then dipped in chocolate and then rolled in red velvet crumbles. My goodness, it was tasty! My friends each got something different as well, and we all sampled each other’s selections. The volcanic caramel brownie was delectable, and I was definitely overcome by food envy when I tried a bite of this tasty morsel. I’m not sure exactly what type of cream it was, but when it was heated up, it flowed all over my friend’s plate, causing a sweet, sticky mess of amazing. The other creation on our table was the blueberry mousse cake, which was smooth and light. The flavor of blueberry was subtle, but not overwhelmed by the white cake. This place was good for an indulgent girls’ afternoon«lunch». I would be interested in going back to try the smaller desserts, since the portions were essentially meal sized on the regular size desserts.

Sassi cakes takes THECAKE hands down for having the best cakes/cupcakes in the Hampton Roads area. Their cakes are moist and truly decadent. I appreciate the love and sass they put in every one of their cakes. I’m tough to please when it comes to my sweets but Sassi cakes managed to meet my standards, and for that they get five stars across the board and a new loyal customer. Keep it up ladies! –Jem

My husband and I checked out this place after I ran across some reviews. We came here around 9 or so — the place was dead, but we still decided to check it out. When you go in, you have to get a tour of their case, pick out your goodies and then sit down in the lounge/bar area. The case is filled with tons of what look like very yummy treats! It’s almost a little overwhelming to decide right there on the spot. My husband picked out the raspberry cheesecake and I grabbed the brownie and Oreo cookie bites. Once we were seated, we ordered two martinis. I can’t remember what my husband ordered, but I got the skittle-tini — I was warned that it was very sweet. HAHA I’m in a dessert place — I don’t think I’m worried about something being too sweet. The dessert was good. Wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but it was very tasty. The brownie was nice, but was covered with a weird gooey cream and then covered in icing. It almost was too much to take. I ended up not finishing it. The Oreo cookies bites were amazing and I definitely plan on snagging some of these again. My husband who is a very harsh critic — LOVED the cheesecake. That says a lot from a man who is so picky and not to mention — not a sweets lover. The martini? Terrible and not sweet at all. I understand that martinis are straight up liquor, but there definitely could have been some contrast to the drink. It was extremely bitter and tangy and so strong that I swear I could have blown fire if ignited. It left a terrible taste in my mouth that I could not get rid of. Definitely should have tried something else. We sat there for nearly an hour just chatting and enjoying our company. It is a nice place, but at 10pm the place was still dead and they almost looked like they were closing up shop. This was on a Saturday. I really can see this place being a nice club/bar if it hits off but I have a feeling that not very many people know this place even exists. Besides the terrible drinks, the only complaint I truly have is the price. For two drinks and two desserts with one thing of cookie bites — our bill was over $ 50 and that to me is astronomical. It’s a very nice place, but in my opinion not worth that amount of money. And because of that — not sure when I will return. Maybe tax season… haha

What do you know! On my way to get my hair cut at G Patton I stumbled upon this little place(actually… not so little) when I was forced to park way way way out of my normal parking area! I’m glad to see that this shopping center is becoming so successful. Have any of you been to the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo? Well, when you walk in, you’ll have that same feeling when walking into that peculiar place. Pink all around. Almost a little too much, but not to distract from the reason why you’re there. When you walk in, you will see a display case with many delectable treats all lined up in a row ready for you to take one home. I’ve been looking for a place like this for a long time ever since my «Simply Sweets» person disappeared off the face of the earth. Anyways, they have all sorts of little cake treats. They have anywhere from a piece of cake covered in various types of chocolates, to mini cakes that is fit for individuals or couples to share, to the big holiday/birthday specialty cakes that you can share with family and friends. I personally liked the Tiramisu. Unlike other Tiramisu’s from other places, this one isn’t overly sweet and when you finish one(or when a normal person finishes half), you don’t feel full because it’s fluffy and light, but at the same time preserving the flavor that you all love. They also have a sit down bar area that they recently expanded into. Apparently, at nights, this is a happening place according to the waitress. They have a separate menu of real food appetizers that you can order from which I have not had the pleasure to try yet. I am eager to come back real soon!
