The wait was minimal however people who came in after us were sat before us even though they don’t take reservations for over 6. They were obviously regulars which didn’t give us a great first impression. Server was great! Chips/guac/salsa for app the guac was superb however chips were obviously not freshly made and way over salted. Both meals were very tasty! I had the tamales and hubs had the enchilada verde

As usual, food and drink were good. Best mojito in town. Unfortunately, while eating appetizerrs, a huge water bug/roach crawled across the brick, inches from my head. We alerted the waiter who didn’t seem alarmed. My husband killed it with his flip flop before it ended up in our hair. Nasty. And then, moments later, after our server left the dead one in the booth, another crawled in the same spot, up the wall and we couldn’t get it. Totally grossed out, we moved. I get that these things happen, but… never an apology from the server or anything to compensate this experience. A bit unbelievable…

This is favorite restaurant ever. The atmosphere will make you think you’re dining in NYC or something, very cute. The service is always great and the food is soooo amazing. Well, I can’t speak on anything but the tamales because that’s all I ever get but I promise they are perfect. Like really perfect.

Best tamales I’ve ever had! Love this place. Definitely not a typical Mexican restaurant. To me the food tastes fresher with more interesting flavor. The atmosphere has a contemporary, minimal feel and it gets packed the later you wait so definitely get there earlier in the evening.

Their tamales are so delicious. Yummy margaritas and a cool vibe and atmosphere. Not too cheap, but I feel it’s worth it. There are other restaurants, shops and bars nearby for a fun weekend night

Went with a friend on the suggestion of many. We ordered several menu items and found it to be better than average but lacking in seasoning/salt in a few dishes(the tamales were slightly bland but by no means terrible). We came for dinner on a Friday and it was crowded but I felt tended to. I made the decision to eat out on the patio and immediately felt terrible because my husband’s friend was stuck sitting out in the(albeit setting) blazing sun. The umbrella at our table kept me covered but between the time of day and position of the umbrella there was no where for the friend to hide(so consider that element when choosing to eat inside or outside on the patio). My drink was delicious and the water glasses were filled multiple times. Overall, I would return but I wouldn’t call it the best Mexican food I have had.

Love the food here. Everything I’ve ever had has been great! The fresh guacamole is top notch and you don’t want to miss out on the tamales or enchiladas verde! The atmosphere is perfect for the area. It can be pretty noisy on the weekends, so be prepared to have to talk loud! However, the food and drinks are worth the weekend crowd noise.

Just get the tamales. Stupid good. Guacamole is the bomb too. If only half your party likes spicy ask for the habeneros on the side

Got back in town after a long trip and stopped in for dinner. Sat at the bar and Brandon took excellent care of me. His Manhattan was one of the best I’ve had! Try the Spinach and Arugula salad and a flat bread pizza :)

Very nice and classy restaurant, the staff is professional and courteous, the menu is Bolivian but the menu has a variety of tasty dishes. I had the tamales Luna maya, which consisted of sweet corn tamale and seasoned brisket, we also had chicken quesadilla Bolivian style. The food was excellent, the prequel was mojitos awesome, the desert was tresleches. Love this place! True awesomeness

Wow. I have found my new favorite restaurant and I feel like an idiot because it took forever for me to try. Friends have been suggesting Luna Maya for years but I thought, «it’s just Mexican. I’ll try it eventually. «Just Mexican is far from what this is. It’s a little piece of food heaven. First, the atmosphere is great. Industrial but not cold. It feels comfortable and welcoming. The wait staff was attentive but not annoying. My hubby waited a little bit for his drink but they were busy. We started with the queso. Tasty. My husband had a mojito… excellent was his description. For dinner my hubby had the tamales luna maya and I had the cilantro lime tacos. Both meals were stellar. Everything was fresh and the flavors were amazing. My only complaint is that I would have loved some more guacamole and pico with my meal. I’ve seen a few people mention the price but honestly, you get what you pay for. If you want cheap, overly processed food then this isn’t the place for you. I’ll gladly pay $ 15 for tacos that are made with clean ingredients any day. We’ll absolutely be back!!!

Very good drinks. My wife and I both had mojitos and enjoyed them very much. The food was pretty good, but just not really Mexican. I’m from Southern California and am part Mexican so I grew up eating a significant amount of real Mexican food. My wife had Tamales, which are supposed to be very juicy pork wrapped in corn meal, wrapped in corn husks, but hers were just some pork on top of chopped up corn. I had enchilada, which were fine but nothing to write home about. Overall I’d go again for the fun atmosphere and the drinks, not for Mexican food.

Delicious. Came for the first time tonight. Hour and half wait for a table but, the hostess was very nice and really kept us up to date on when we would get a table. While waiting we ordered drinks from the bar that were delicious, I can’t remember the name, but it was rum with muddled limes and sugar and they were definitely one of the better cocktails I’ve ever had. Once we got seated, our waitress was maybe just overwhelmed and tired from the amount of people being there and it being a little later in the night, she was a little slow to get going but everything we ordered came relatively quick and everything was correct. I had the piques a la macho which was incredible. If you are a spicy food lover, this is a must try. Very good, the steak was cooked perfectly. The other people at the table got fish tacos which were excellent and a brisket burrito that was also very good. Tips: 1.) the restaurant is pretty small so if you’re going for dinner maybe go early or late instead of hitting it right at the dinner rush because you will wait a while. 2.) if you’re going for fish tacos, go early. Apparently they run out of fish on a daily basis due to the popularity and availability of the fresh fish they purchase. 3.) if you a see a parking spot on colley street, just park. Very limited at the restaurant and its a lot of one way streets that will keep you driving around if you don’t just commit and walk.

All I can say is AMAZING! I was so surprised how much I enjoyed Luna Maya. I typically stay away from Mexican food because I feel it is not worth the price, but this is a total exception. Both my girlfriend and I’s meals were perfect. Great portions, and truly unique in taste. The atmosphere is awesome, an urban almost bar/edgy coffee feel, but great for conversation. I have not experienced Mexican like this and will coming back again soon!

These guys have a lot of work to do… I’m wondering if I visited the same restaurant as some of the people that gave them such a stellar review. We went on a Saturday night while we were in town visiting some friends that had just moved to Chesapeake(none of us had been here before). I’m a Mexican food junkie… more specifically; I’m a tamale junkie. I don’t care where you go, if someone is selling tamales they are great. What’s not to love about corn, lard, and pork wrapped in a husk… I was excited for the love of my culinary life. We arrived at 9:00pm and the restaurant was empty(again it was a Saturday night). We sat at the bar and ordered drinks… not what we wanted because they had informed us several kegs kicked earlier. Okay, no problem, we know the business and things happen. We then asked for menus because we wanted a few appetizers. We were promptly told that… we close at 10 so you need to order quickly. Let me expand on the issue of coming into a restaurant and ordering right before closing. First, from a consumers point of view, if your hours are posted that you’re open… consumers should be able to order what they want up to that time. On the flip side, from my 20 years in restaurants I fully understand that the staff is doing what they need to so that they are not working three hours after close to get ready to open the next day again. It’s frustrating when someone comes in fifteen minutes to close and tries to course out their meal… however, it’s what happens. So again, we came in at 9:00pm and were told they close at 10:00pm…that’s an hour before the posted closing time; if you can’t pull it together then, whether bartender or kitchen, you should probably look for a new career. We ordered the tamale side, queso and taquitos at about 9:08pm…plenty of time for them to heat the tamale(which cannot be made to order), warm the queso(which again is a batch item made before hand) and fry the taquitos. When the food arrived I saw the tamale… not what I expected. There was no husk in site and a layer of slop on top of what appeared to be creamed corn… what in the world?! I took a bite and have no clue(still to this day a week later) what it was… the pork was flavorless and the corn mixture was bland and cold. As mentioned before, tamales are a mixture of masa and lard with pork(typically) put in the middle and then wrapped in a corn husk and steamed. This variation of a simple but classic Mexican dish should embarrass the owners and preclude them from even claiming to be a Latin restaurant. The queso actually was good but the chips were stale and had a burnt flavor. The taquitos were also burnt but could probably be a decent app if the staff could cook them without bursting out the filling which will burn. Aside from the food the bartender kept making comments to other employees…“you need to tell them that this is last call”(at 9:45pm). When we asked: «do you always close at 10:00pm on Saturday’s», we received the curt response: «yes, we’ve done it for 20 years and will continue to do it… it’s a tradition». So, if you’re in Norfolk and want some Mexican… go to the local grocery store and pickup some frozen food to microwave, you’ll have a better experience. Maybe the reason they close so early on a Saturday night(when the other restaurants/bars down the street were busy) is because of the food and surprisingly careless service.

I’m going to make it simple and neat. I thought the entire place was amazing. The décor was quite interesting. I feel like it used to be an old warehouse and was renovated. I love the idea of keeping the old bricks and incorporating them into the rest of the interior. I thought the open seating was a brilliant idea. What really amazed me, no matter how busy they are everything was neat and organized. Let’s talk about the food. By far the best Mexican food I’ve ever tasted. The tamales Maya Luna was perfectly seasoned, the shredded beef alone was dynamite. I haven’t been hungry because I was little sick but the appetizer brought back my appetite. The stuffed poblanos peppers was definitely the highlight of my visit. It was incredibly delicious and flavorful. I like the combination of sweet and sour and the rice and chorizo was just complete my day. The entire meal was sensational. I’ve visited a lot places and saw busy scenarios however this place rocks. I’ve noticed that no matter how busy the entire restaurant the staffs are polite and accommodating. Hands down, one of the best customer service I’ve ever received. I can’t wait to come back.

This place is AWFUL !! I didn’t care for it at all. you are paying for the velvet curtain you must walk thru in order to get into the building. My service was awful and not attentive at all. I ordered a burrito and was super unimpressed and could’ve gone to Moes and paid first off half the price but gotten a WAY much better burrito. Not a fan and do not recommend this place.

Love love love Luna Maya! After a return trip from Honduras, I never thought I would find a guacamole I would enjoy so much stateside. Forget about me sharing, I will eat a whole group serving all for myself because it is that good. Now I’ve tried a few things on the menu… my favorite is now what I tried last night: the tamales. I wasn’t so hungry for the dinner entrée, so I ordered the appetizer portion. It is the best like everyone else says. Why? It’s got that combination of sweetness from the corn mix and the savory from the beef with a nice topping of sour cream. The happy hour is the best around here because my all time faves — margaritas and guacamole are even cheaper. The place itself is one of a kind. It’s got a very open feeling, but the place still has distinct separation between the bar and dine in areas. I also like that extra room they have that they use for either private parties or to open up to larger groups. There’s even a nice looking outdoor space for nicer weather that I have yet to enjoy. What’s not to love about this place when there is great food and service at a great location.

Very modern, industrial and hip atmosphere. Dim and ambient lighting with lots of candles. Street parking. Service is good, nothing spectacular. We started our dinner with cilantro lime chicken quesadillas. The tortilla and cheese itself is tasty, but the chicken was overcooked and tough. I ordered the chicken chorizo chipotle enchiladas. Typical enchiladas flavor. The chicken chorizo is an interesting twist. The chipotle sauce was good. The black beans were very yummy. Sadly the rice was bland and a little dried out, probably from being blasted under the broiler when melting the cheese on the enchiladas. This dish definitely needed some sort of acidic component to round out the richness. Hubby ordered the piqué a la macho with medium cooked steak and shrimp. This dish was full of flavor! The spicy potatoes were amazing. The smothered habanero onions were legit. Shrimp was coated in this unique and tasty red sauce. The steak has great flavor but overcooked and chewy. The slaw rounded out the meal nicely, just what the dish needed, some brightness. This dish will set you back a hefty $ 27 bucks though. Yikes! Overall, both dishes were good with interesting spices/seasonings and a nice amount of heat. I would probably come back for happy hour or lunch. I can’t quite distinguish the difference between Mexican and Bolivian flavors but I’m assuming it’s the missing element of cumin.
