don’t come here. they tell you everything will take 2 weeks to be delivered. i ordered a bed frame in oct. they waited til november to tell me that it was backordered, and would be in december. then i called the end of december. they said it would be in january. i called january. they said feb at the latest – they offered to let me pick out another bed frame at no discount(how generous!). given that i picked out a matching piece that had been delivered earlier, i can’t pick out another frame without the pieces clashing. If you want any furniture when they say you will have it, go somewhere else. oh, and their delivery guys are very unprofessional. showed up 3 hours late to deliver the other piece i ordered at the same time as the bed frame(9:30pm on a monday… wtf?).

My dad needed a couch. Badly. He’d had the one for more than 30 years. It was ugly back then and now… Needed. To. Go. Having not bought a sofa in decades, my 86 year old dad was out of touch with current prices. My husband and I had to spearhead this mission, and knew dad would be a tough sell. He simply thought we were lying when we told him a decent leather couch costs at least a grand. Our first stops were at Harlem Furniture and Sofa World, both in Morton Grove. The former had some decent pieces for cheap, and the latter educated my dad of the pricey-ness of European-made high-end sofas. Quite the sticker shock there. I thought to try Marjen simply having driven by it hundreds of times. I always assumed they dealt mainly in mattresses and bedding, but they have a goodly amount of living and dining room pieces also. We were greeted by Howard(who took over management of Marjen from his father-in-law Sid). A family-run business, this store has been around for more than 45 years. Thus far, shopping had been painful. One thing I liked about Howard is — he immediately got it. That is, unlike the guy at Harlem, he understood that while my dad was buying, my hub and I were really the ones responsible for choosing. Howard offered information about various sofas, which my hub then conveyed to my hard-of-hearing father. We narrowed it down to two leather sofas. The one we ultimately got was originally $ 1599; he sold it to us for $ 1265. We could have gotten it even more cheaply, as Howard was willing to bargain — if we bought it then and there. But my dad wanted to explore every option and wanted to check out La-Z-Boy before deciding. In the end, nothing we saw compared to what we got. We were sold by a Klaussner Conquest leather sofa — it’s a more traditional style, very good quality leather, and my husband loved the fact that it was made in the U.S.(North Carolina, specifically). I’ve priced the sofa online, and have seen it for around $ 1700. Howard sweetened the deal with no delivery charge. He did so, I think, because the delivery was also in Niles. There’s a sign on the desk that relates Marjen, after many years, regrets they must now charge a delivery fee. The sofa was in stock; bought on Sunday, delivered on Wednesday. The night before, they called and asked if they could move the delivery time up(btwn. 12 and 2) since it was first on the list. It arrived, in good condition, at 12:45. All is well. Now, if I can just get my dad to chuck that gross orange shag carpeting…

we have bought plenty of furniture from this place but this time we needed a mattress. The worst ever… not only did they tell us that Elk Grove was too far to deliver and it «wasn’t worth it» they changed their delivery price twice from $ 50 to $ 75 in 2 different conversations. The manager of the store was so cocky and he needs an attitude adjustment. I will not ever go there for business again. They didn’t have the mattress in stock and we would have to wait 5 days. We were buying a mattress not a car. The salesperson Joe kept telling us I’m not on commission and I have to ask the manager and couldn’t’ make his own decisions.

I always like to give family owned businesses a chance when I am making larger purchases. However, in this case we really regret our decision to purchase our dining room table from Marjen. The price was okay(pretty much in line with most other reputable furniture stores: Harlem, etc.) but the service was horrendous. First, we ordered our table because they did not have it in stock. We were told it would only take 1 – 2 weeks. Well… 1 – 2 weeks turned into 3 then turned into 4 and then 5 and finally after about 6 ½ weeks of calling(and having our calls avoided by our sales rep) they told us it was coming in. The delivered it(damaged!) then had to wait another 3 weeks to receive the final chair. Both times the delivery was well after the time frame they told us that it would be. Overall, a pretty bad experience — I DONOT recommend shopping here… they won’t be getting our business again.
