I have shopped at Big Y since it opened here but was saddened today to learn that they permit open carry in their stores(and, yes, I got this information from the store directly). While open carry is legal in CT, private businesses can decide not to allow guns in their stores. Big Y does not yet have such a policy. So that you are aware, Costco, Starbucks, Price Rite, Whole Foods, and Target have policies that do not permit guns in their stores.

Love the Pizza. Made fresh. Very good and at a great price if you have their silver card.

Ok, so after 5 years of shopping here I now know where the«Y» came from in «Big Y». Every time I check out at the cash register I ask myself«Y» did I come here again? Wow, this place is expensive! $ 10 for a small bag of tomatoes? Go across the street to Caraluzzi and you’ll see how much better the pricing is. If Big Y would eliminate the coin system(sorry I don’t have time to carry and collect coins) and just charge reasonable prices, it wouldn’t be that bad. But I can’t afford a 40% premium on vegetables and meats and other stuff. Stew’s and Caraluzzi’s has the right idea of moving towards higher quality products with straight forward reasonable pricing. BTW, I’m big into farmer’s markets and gardening and am insulted by Big Y’s fake farmers market stand in the front. Sorry, but those tomatoes, corn, and peppers you have displayed in May are the same unripe ones you sell in January — they aren’t local and aren’t summer fresh. BTW2, for five years there has been a foul stench emitting from the back right corner near the deli. Turns me off every time I am looking for pita bread. Anyone else every notice that?

Gourmet G. pretty much covered it – it’s one humongous grocery store that has pretty much everything you can imagine. Pick up one of their fresh paninis at the deli for a quick lunch — and if that’s not your thing, they have everything else from sushi to pizza.

This mammoth supermarket, the only one in town, probably draws a good percentage of its customers from nearby communities, because it offers one-stop shopping at its finest. Every department — be it bakery, deli, butcher, seafood, or produce — is first class, like a gourmet shop unto itself, yet prices are in keeping with your standard chains. In addition to foodstuffs, they carry wine and alcohol, household accessories, automotive supplies, books and magazines, greeting cards, cut flowers and floral arrangements, and the most extensive collection of pet food, treats, and accessories I’ve seen outside of Petsmart. Shelves are well-stocked, aisles are free of cartons and wide enough to negotiate without crashing carts, lighting is easy on the eyes, and it looks and feels immaculate. There’s a café with sandwiches so good it’s actually a destination for non-grocery shoppers, and a full-scale pizzeria, with slices to eat in-house or excellent pies and calzones to go. I frequently browse supermarkets in foreign countries to get a feel for the local culture and customs, but rarely am I as fascinated by a grocery store stateside as I am by this Big Y.
